Hill
Crest Cemetery
Dry Ridge, Grant County,
Kentucky
The Hill Crest Cemetery inventory was sent to me sometime ago by Mr. Melvin Cooke, a resident of Dry Ridge, and a member of the Grant County Historical Society. Not long after receiving this inventory, Mr. Cooke passed away. This is a 1988 draft copy with a few later burials included, and while I cannot prove or disprove its accuracy, I believe his efforts are worth sharing. Mr. Cooke's dedication to genealogy will always be appreciated by those who knew him.

Hill Crest Cemetery, a public perpertual care cemetery began with the construction of US 25 in the early 1920s on the west side of the railroad. The previous through road, Covington-Lexington Turnpike, ran north and southeast of the railroad. With the US 25 highway now open, F. I. Conrad subdivded his farm in 1924, selling a tract of 45 acres west of the highway to J. H. Colcord. In June 1926, Colcord, along with Robert M. Lucas, Louis Lucas and John L. Vest incorporated the DryRidge Burial Park Association. Colcord deeded 13.71 acres of land purchased from Conrad to the associaton. Some lots were sold, including a lot to George W. and Pledgie Dunn Jones, on which is buried their infant son, George W. Jones Jr., said to be the first buried in this cemetery. With the onset of the Great Depression, the burial association was placed in receivership. In August 1932, the property was sold to Harry J. Eckler, who in turn deeded the property to the Dry Ridge Cemetery. This company was incorporated by J. H. Colcord, Harry J. Eckler and Mabel Eckler.
