The parents of Thomas Jones are not mentioned. The date and place of his birth not indicated. In 1832 the veteran stated that he was 77 years of age.
The veteran married Catharine Clarkson on October 17, 1780. She was born on June 1 or June 11, 1760. The place of her birth and the name of her parents are not given. In 1838 she was residing in Nelson County, Virginia, and in 1844 and 1845 she was living in Jonesboro, Nelson County, Virginia. The following information is given concerning the children of Thomas and Catharine Jones: Hezekiah, born March 3, 1782, Clarkson, born December 9, 1783, died November 12, 1785, Shelton, born January 21, 1875, Joshua, born January 28, 1787, and John C., born July 10, 1791.
At the time of his enlistment the veteran was a resident of that part of Amherst County, Virginia, which was later Nelson County, Virginia. In 1832 he was a resident of Nelson County, Virginia. On July 8, 1835, near Jonesboro, Nelson County, Virginia, he died.
When the veteran applied for pension he stated that he enlisted in 1776 and served until December 1799, amounting to three years, with the Virginia Troops under Captains Samuel J. Cabell, James Franklin, and Clough Shelton and Colonels Edward Stevens and Samuel Hawes. He also stated that he was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and was appointed Orderly Sergeant after the battle of Brandywine. He likewise stated that he served two tours in the militia. It is also stated that he enlisted in November 1780 and served six months, and that he again enlisted in the summer and served until the fall of 1781, amounting to two months, as a commissioned officer (rank not given), with the Virginia Troops under Captain Richard Ballenger and Colonel Lindsey.
Thomas Jones was pensioned on Certificate 12836, which was issued under the Act of June 7, 1832. The pension was paid at the Virginia Agency. Catharine Jones, the veteran's widow, was pensioned on Certificate 5554, which was issued under the Acts of March 3, 1842 and June 17, 1844. The pension was paid at the Richmond, Virginia Agency.
