Valentine Jump
Valentine Jump was aged 72 years in the 1850 census for Cass County, Illinois, born in Pennsylvania. Jump researchers believe he was born perhaps in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the son of John Jump Jr. He appears on the Pendleton COunty, Kentucky tax lists from 1809-1819 and then on the Grant County tax lists through 1831. He married Polly Hiller on September 25, 1815 (bond) in Pendleton County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Cornelius Hiler and was age 52 years in 1850. The family apparently resided in Morgan County, Illinois in the early 1830s and is on the 1840 Schuyler County, Illinois. This family is not listed in the 1850 Illinois census index, but is found in Cass County, Illinois. It is not known when Valentine died but his wife died in May 1857 at age 58 years, and is buried in the Pulaski Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois.
Their children:
1. Levisa Jump was 34 years of age in 1850, born in Pendleton County.
Married first, David Thornsberry, August 15, 1833 in Morgan County,
Illinois. Living nest to Valentine Jump family in the 1850 census. She married
second, John G. Gray on November 10, 1854 in Cass County, Illinois; not found
in 1860 Cass County.
2. Perhaps Martha Jump? She doesn't appear on the 1820 Grant County, Kentucky census for this family, but did marry Daniel Colby/Corby September 22, 1835 in Morgan County, Illinois. It is not known what other family to place her in. This family is not found in any 1840 or 1850 census index.
3. John H. Jump was born circa 1815-1820 and was killed in February 1840 (apparently in Adams County, Illinois since there is a court case there involving all of these people plus Valentine Jump and David Thornsberry, by Jeptha D. Hiler (a relative of his mother?). John was buried in the Pulaski Cemetery, Augusta Tnp., Hancock County, Illinois.
4. James Jump age 29 in 1850; 35 in 1860; 45 in 1870. Living 1853 and 1860 in Marion County, Oregon, unmarried. Living in 1870 in Yamhill County, Oregon where he reportedly died in 1872, leaving a widow Amy (who had remarried to John P. Foeser by 1888) and a son Charles.
5. Dennis Jump age 26 in 1850 and 35 in 1860, born in Grant County, Kentucky, married Mrs. Harriet Kenney on July 21, 1852 in Cass County, Illinois; living 1860 in Husted Tnp., Cass County, Illinois. No on 1900 Illinois soundex.
6. Margaret Ann Jump was born circa 1830-1835. She married David Thompson August 20, 1846 in Cass County, Illinois. Not in Cass County in 1850.
7. Sarah E. Jump was born circa 1828 in Grant County Kentucky. She married Thomas Clark April 12, 1851 in Cass County, Illinois where she reportedly died circa 1907-1908.
8. William Jump was born 1830 in Grant County, Kentucky; and was living with parents 1850 in Cass County, Illinois census. No further record.
9. Lucinda Jump age 14 in 1850; 25 in 1860, probably born Schuyler County, Illinois, married James W. Kinney on November 25, 1833 in Cass County, Illinois. Living in 1860 Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois with son Albert born 1856.
10. Barbara Jump was born 1835 in Kentucky. She married James Wesley Johnson February 10, 1853 in Grant County, Kentucky. She died January 29, 1923 in Mason, Grant County Kentucky, and is buried in Mason Baptist Church Cemetery. The 1850 census shows she is living in Grant County, Kentucky; it is not known why she is not with her parents in Illinois.
11. Census records indicate another daughter born between 1835-1840.
