Ministers and Officers


A view of the Church's minutes books beginning with the oldest existing book (1897-1963) provided the following list of ministers and church officers, milestones in the development of the Church and arrangements made to provide for housekeeping and care of the cemetery. Congregational business meetings were usually held once a month following worship services consisting of praise (singing), prayer and preaching. The minister usually presided as moderator of the meeting, except when the minister was the subject being discussed. Then a member would served as moderator pro tem.

The following resolutions were offered and adopted by the church for record. Whereas Bro. G. W. Hill has pastored Mt. Zion Church for 14 years, he has thought it best to sever his connection as Pastor. Therefore we the members of Mt. Zion Church feel it to be our duty as Christians to have the following resolutions recorded on our church book: Resolved: that in the resignation of Bro. G. W. Hill as Pastor of our church we have lost an able minister and pastor and he leaves a void in our hearts and church that will be difficult to fill. Resolved: That we ever hold him in highest esteem and respect for his long and faithful service to us as minister and pastor, and can say he is filled with love and faithfulness to the master cause. Resolved: That these resolutions be adopted and recorded with our minutes and published in the Williamstown Courier by order of Mt. Zion Church.
June - A motion that G. W. Alexander be appointed to secure lumber and build a good substantial stile (steps for scaling a wall or fence, or a series of three steps to assist in mounting a horse), coast $5.63.

April - A motion carried that the rumors regarding violations of the rules by church members. They will be invited to come back to church.


1906
Bro. L. Johnson, Pastor, called Bro. A. L. Crawley September 1906 for year 1907.
May - The Baptist Church met and it being roll call day we had the pleasure of being with us on this occasion by the invitation of our pastor, Bro. J. W. Waldrope, J. J. Wills, and Dr. Adams who added much to the meeting by their earnest talks and sermons and prayers.
July - The committee on church roll called, reported 158 actual members, 33 corresponding members and 50 drop members.
September - Report of committee on church roll as follows: We thought best to divide the list of names into three classes. 1st, those we know we call actual church members, 158. 2nd, those who scarcely ever meet with us; we never hear from them but think they could, most of them, be reached by correspondence, we named corresponding members, 33. 3rd those members who have wondered away, have been away for years and we know nothing about them or where they live or whether they are dead, we called drop members, 50.


1907

March - A motion carried that the members of this church meet for the purpose of taking into consideration whether we will repair this church or build a new one.
April - A motion by Bro. Perry Massey to repair our church carried. The committee appointed to serve during the repairs is Tom Points, Tom Johnson, J. P. Franks, John Noel and Perry Massey.
May - The repair committee reported to make the following repairs: Patch roof and gutters and paint church outside. The committee to solicit funds included Perry Massey, John Noel and Annie Menefee.
June - Contributed to Bro Jas. W. Rodger, State Orphans Home $4.42.
July - The committee on repairs reported cost of about $1000 for new roof, belfry, foundation, weatherboards, windows changed and painting.


1908

September - The committee on raising funds to pay the debt on the church and a motion to retain them until later was moved and seconded. Dr. Powell of Louisville preached the sermon. The church debt of $1506.30 was all raised on the day of the dedication
New building was dedicated September 25. J. A. Davis was unanimously elected as first pastor of new church. Sister Green's funeral was preached next day. Sister Green was one of the oldest members being 81 years old. J. P. Franks, J. T> Points, Dave Points and Dan Points act as ushers at dedication and to hitch horses.

October - By committee the church was instructed to hire Sister Roxie Beverly as Saxton for another year at $40.
December - It was moved and seconded that Bro. Davis do as he sees fit with the buggy presented to him by the members of this church.

February 17 church agrees to trade the lot North of the old graveyard to F. M. Smith for the lot where the schoolhouse burned.

A motion was made and carried that the church appoints Bro. Beatty to collect money and give for the building of Stuartsville Church.

May - The church orders to draw on treasure to pay Clyde Franks $4.82 for gasoline.
July - Ella Johnson was appointed on the committee for minister's aid. The church orders a draw on the treasure for $3 to pay T. L. Johnson for having the deed recorded.
September - The Church calls Bro. Stuart as pastor.
October - Bro. Stuart accepts the call as pastor. A motion was carried to accept the Budget system.
November - a motion was carried to appoint a committee to solicit for church expenses and budget system. The committee comprised of the deacons, Anna Menefee, Missie Conrad, Millie Chapman and Blanche Franks.


1918

March - The committee on parsonage reported they have bought the parsonage and have subscribed $2642.
August - A motion was carried to call a pastor by private ballot for 1919. Bro. C. O. Stuart was called.

April - The committee for new deacons reported. The following deacons were elected b secret ballot: L. F. Chapman, W. T. Points, G. A. Lawrence and Dave Points.
July - Deacon Ordination. Z. W. Pigg read requirements of a deacon.
August - The church votes to elect deacons as a committee to see about selling some of the parsonage lot for grave purposes.
September - A motion was made and seconded for the church to call a Pastor. The church agrees to vote on our present pastor, W. O. Harrison.


1920

Bro. Griffin Chapman went as missionary to Japan May 7.
January - The church votes to accept $100 from the state board to help on the pastor's salary and if not needed it will be returned to the board at the end of the year.
April - Mr. Beatty, Sunday School Superintendent, Chester Alexander,Assistant, A. T. Johnson, Secretary/Treasurer. Motion carried to sell part of the parsonage lot for grave lots.
May - The church votes to have Bro. Griffin Chapman hold a two-week meeting the last of July before leaving for Japan.
September - Church votes to postpone call of pastor indefinitely. The church votes to license Bro. Elbert Chapman to preach.
October - The church holds a secret ballot to call a pastor. The nominees are Bro. Sams and Bro. Baker. Brother Baker having a yes majority was called.


1922

Resignation of Mrs. L. M. Menefee as entertainment committee. Mrs. J. Hopkins named in her stead. Resignation of L. F. Chapman as moderator with Rev. R. H. Tolle in his stead.  Call of pastor Rev. R. April 16 - Motion to raise grave lots from $5 to $7.50 in one month.
June 19 - the mt. Zion Baptist Church met on the above date to celebrate its Centennial. The church was 100 years old May 19, but on account of bad weather was postponed until the June meeting. The program was rendered as follows. The service was called to order by Pastor W. M. Wilson and the congregation joined in singing, after which the devotional was conducted by Rev. A. B. Johnson, a former Pastor. The history of the church was read by Rev. J. E. Chapman, after which the old hymn, Faith of Our Fathers, was rendered by three brethren, namely, Chester Alexander, John Beaty, and W. M. Wilson. Dr. C. M. Thompson, Correspondent Secretary State Board of Missions brought us the message of the morning with great power. The afternoon service opened by singing a number of old hymns, the devotional conducted by Rev. J. S. Ransdall, state enlistment worker, after which REv. W. Q. M. Wood, field workers North Bend Association, brought the message of the evening. Superintendent of the Baptist Children Home  Glendale, Dr. George M. Moor, brought us a message on the needs of the home, after which we were dismissed.
November 5 - L. M. Menefee, Arthur Barnes, A. T. Johnson and Connie Franks were ordained as deacons. Rev. Z. W. Pigg offered the ordination prayer. Rev. B. A. Miller the benediction.
December 21 - Motion to elect Bro. Herman Carnes as board member.

September 9 - Special business meeting. Motion and 2nd that three young members be received into the church: Harry Waller, Barnett Jump and Eugene Lawrence. Passed.
September 22 - Motion and 2nd that Bro. Barnes and Bro. Robert Blackburn get needed repairs for furnace of church. Motion and 2nd to have H. M. Blackburn repair and paint roof. Motion and 2nd that church buy paint for roof from Clyde Franks.
October 27 - Motion passed to accept Bro. and Mrs. Privett as members until letter received from Crescent Hill Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.

Zion Church on October 13 for purpose of ordaining Bro. Raymond E. Lawrence to full gospel ministry.
