Richard Rue

Richard Rue was born in 1760 or 1761 in Kent County, Maryland, where his father died while he was at an early age. Leaving Richard an orphan; the names of his parents are not shown. Richard was taken to live in the family of his brother-in-law, Edward Holman, and "there brought up a farmer". About the year 1774, Edward Holman, with his family, including George Holman and Richard Rue, moved to Monongahala County, Pennsylvania, and about the early spring of 1776, said Edward Holman, George Holman and Richard Rue went down the Ohio River, settled first at the mouth of the Kentucky River, then near Harrodsburg (later Kentucky).

While residing near said Harrodsburg, Richard Rue volunteered about March 1777, served as private in Captain James Harrod's company under Colonel George Rogers Clark and was in two battles when the for there was attacked by the Indians. In 1778, he served as private in Captains Levi Todd's and Helm's companies in Colonel George Rogers Clark's expedition against the Indians, was at Kaskaskia when it was taken and in the battle at Bowman's Corncribs under Colonel Bowman; in 1779, he moved to the falls of the Ohio River, in the spring of that year served as private in Captain Patten's company, Colonel Bowman's regiment and was in several battles when the Indian towns were destroyed, after which he served in Captain Oldham's company wand was in the battle of Old Chillicothe. In 1781, Richard Rue, in company with George Holman and Evan Hinton, while going to Boone's Old Fort, was captured by Simon Girty and a band of Indian warriors, was held about three years, then made his escape with George Holman, Evan Hinton having been killed by the Indians; these services on the frontier amounted to at least two years and eight months. He served subsequently three months in General George Rogers Clark's expedition against the Indians on the upper Wabash River.

Richard Rue resided in Kentucky until 1805, then moved to Wayne County, Indiana. He was allowed pension on his application executed February 15, 1833, at which time he resided in Wayne County, Indiana. He made no reference to wife or children.  

In 1833, George Holman was a resident of Wayne County, Indiana, aged 71 years; he stated that he had been acquainted with Richard Rue since infancy.
