John Taylor's date and place of birth not given. When the veteran applied for pension on September 12, 1820, he stated that he was about 66 years of age. When he applied for pension on February 12, 1827, he stated that he was 69 years of age. No reason is given in the file for the discrepancies in the veteran's age.

The veteran married Ruth Bailey on March 16, 1780 in Montgomery County, Maryland, where she then lived with her parents. The veteran and his wife, Ruth, had the following children: Elizabeth, born January 1, 1781; Mary, born September 1, 1782; Jemima, born November 5, 1784; John, born February 7, 1787; Lesson, born May 4, 1791; Hillery, born September 22, 1793; Mahala, born November 16, 1795; Washington, born January 24, 1798; and Walter, born August 22, 1800. In 1820 the veteran stated that living with him was his wife and his daughter, Mahala. In 1827 he stated that his family living with him consisted of his wife, Ruth Taylor, and Levi Sherly, a grandson, eight years of age. The names of the parents of this grandson were not stated. In 1840 Ruth Taylor, widow of the veteran, stated that her children, Mary and Jemima, were then dead (dates of death no shown), but that the remaining seven children were still living. In 1840 she was residing in Harrison County, Kentucky, at which time she stated that she was about 83 years of age. She also stated then that she divided her time with her children who resided in Harrison County.

The veteran enlisted in Baltimore, Maryland. His residence during service is not shown. At the time of his marriage he was living near Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland. He remained here until 1798 when he moved with his family to Bourbon County, Kentucky. He lived there two years and then moved to that part of Nicholas County which later became a part of Harrison County, Kentucky. In 1820 and as late as 1827 the veteran was a resident of Harrison County, Kentucky. He died May 12, 1827 in Harrison County, Kentucky.

When the veteran applied for pension, it was stated that he enlisted in April 1776 and served at various times until his discharge at Annapolis, Maryland, either sometime in 1782 or until the close of the Revolutionary War as Private and Sergeant with the Maryland Troops under Captains Samuel Smith, Levin Winder and John Jordan, and Colonels William Smallwood and Stone. It was likewise stated that the veteran was in the siege of "Mud Island" and in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, Brandywine, Monmouth and Stony Point, in which last battle he was wounded. The veteran was pensioned for three years' service.

John Taylor was pensioned on Certificate 10922, which was issued under the Act of March 18, 1818. Pension was paid at the Kentucky Agency, Ruth Taylor, widow of the veteran, was pensioned on Certificate 3389, which was issued under the Act of July 4, 1836. Pension was paid at the Kentucky Agency.
