Excerpts from Various Newspapers - 1894

The Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY)
Monday, 26 November 1894

The Winchester Sun had the following:  "Sheriff Combs, of Breathitt county, came down Monday and took Grant Cecil back with him to Jackson to stand trial, which was set for Tuesday.  Cecil is charged with the killing of Joe Damerel and John Burns, in Lee county, on March 15 last.

Cecil was married to Miss Rhoda Mace at 1 o'clock p.m., on that day.  Within twenty-five minutes after the ceremony Damerel approached Mr. and Mrs. Cecil, and, presenting the former with a bouquet, made a very indecent remark, which Cecil promptly resented by drawing his revolver and firing.  Following this there was considerable firing on both sides, with the result that Joe Damerel and his cousin, John Burns, were killed.

Cecil is certain that he did not kill Burns.  He and Burns were the best of friends, and he thinks Burns' death was the result of a stray bullet from the other side.

Cecil fled, but was captured in a few days and placed in jail at Beattyville.  Shortly afterward his friends attempted to rescue him, and came very near succeeding.  He was then brought to the Winchester jail for safe-keeping.  A few weeks ago, however, he went out of the Winchester jail with two other prisoners and got as far as Beattyville on the road to his home in Owsley county when he was recaptured and brought back.  He says he had nothing to do with breaking the jail, and did not want to go out, but the other fellows, Combs and Hollon, overpersuaded him, and he went along jut for company.  He said if his case did not come to trial this term he would give bond and go home to his wife, whom he had not seen since he fought in her defense.  Damerel was a former suitor of Miss Mace."
