Allie HACKER

The Beattyville Enterprise (Beattyville, KY)
Thursday, 23 July 1953

Waiving juvenile jurisdiction last Saturday, County Judge Cecil Kincaid relinquished over to the Lee Circuit Court the responsibility of handling the case involving Zeke Hacker, a 14-year-old youth charged with murder in connection with the slaying of his father, Allie Hacker last week.

The boy was released on a $3000 bond to await the action of the next Grand Jury which will convene here the third Monday in October.

Since Zeke readily admittted shooting his father twice with a 12-guage shotgun, there was no examining trial and no testimony was heard concerning this case when it was brought up Saturday morning.  Court officials and attorneys for the boy appointed by Judge Kincaid, agreed on the bond and the boy was released immediatley after it was filled.

The victim of the shooting, 55-year-old Allie Hacker, was buried Friday afternoon in Riverview Cemetery following funeral services conducted in the chapel of the King Justice Funeral Home.  The funeral services were under the direction of Rev. R. B. Baker, pastor of the Beattyville Baptist Church of which the slain man was a recent member.

Nannie R. Reins HAMMONS

The Palm Beach Post
Sunday, 5 June 1949

About 11 p.m. on the night of March 23 of this year, Bess Hammons (Mrs. James Goodrich), well-known Palm Beach real estate broker who lives and has her office in a two-story rambling structure 338 Royal Palm Way, telephoned the Palm Beach police.  Her 78-year-old mother, Mrs. N. R. Hammons, was not in her room, and could not be found nowhere she told officiers.

She had last seen the frail little elderly woman about 6:30 p.m. she reported, when Mrs. Hammons went to her bedroom on the second floor, in a slight huff over plans for a pot-luck supper for an unexpected guest.

No known trace has ever been found of the aged woman, known to have poor eyesight, said to have been rather unfamiliar with the streets of Palm Beach despite long residence here, believed to have little money with her.

No bus driver or motorist has ever been located who could remember giving her a ride.

No body has ever been washed up from Lake Worth.

Police claim that all known methods of departure have been checked.  Relatives in Kentucky and Georgia and friends as far away as California have denied ever seeing her.

Officially she has vanished, leaving even fewer clues than Judge Crater did when he disappeared in the heart of New York City some 19 years ago.  According to Police Chief Eddie Longo, it's Palm Beach's first unsolved disappearance.

NOTE:  Nannie was the granddaughter of Benjamin F. & Martha Wilson Raines/Reins and probably the daughter of Celucous Reins & Emily Clark.  She is found living with her aunt, Louvenia Raines Clark, in 1880 Owsley County, KY.  She was married to Jefferson Hammons ca 1888.

James Edward HOWARD

The Beattyville Enterprise
Thursday, 9 May 1935

Heidelberg, May 4 -- The body of James Howard, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Howard, was found yesterday morning about 5 o'clock, 36 days after he was carried over the dam in a rowboat.

Muncy Treadway and Sam P. Brandenburg came upon the body floating in the middle of the river two miles below Lock 14, the scene of the accident.  Treadway and Brandenburg were rowing to a fishing hole when they found the remains.  They towed the corpse to the shore and notified the parents.

During the high water on March 27 the Howard boy was rowing in a boat above the dam.  He would allow the boat to drift near the spillway and then row out of danger.  It is thought by some that he decided to go over the dam and shoot the rapids to entertain a number of persons watching him from the guard wall.  Either that or he allowed the skiff to get too near the crest and was carried over.  The boat was ground to splinters in the undertow but the body never came to the surface.  The accident occurred at 1:22 o'clock, according to records of the lock keeper.

The body, badly decomposed, was kept in a boat filled with water until preparations for burial was made.  Burial services were held this afternoon.

He is survived by his parents and a younger brother and sister.

Thomas HOWELL and Millard HOWELL

The Paducah Evening Sun
Friday, 14 October 1904

Beattyville, Ky., Oct. 14. -- Thomas Howell, a prominent farmer, and his seventeen-year-old son were suffocated to death at the bottom of a twenty-foot well by carbonic acid gas, the father being a victim of his efforts to save his son.

Their funeral were held jointly, and they were buried in a common grave.

For some time the Howells had been casting around for a good place for a well.  They finally found a spot.  Digging began several days ago, Farmer Howell and his son doing most of the work.  They had got to a depth of about twenty feet when they quit work.

Young Howell was lowered down into the hole to see how things looked.  A rigging had been placed at the top of the well, consisting of a stout rope and a wash tub, which was used to carry up the dirt and stones which were excavated and to lower the shovelers.  Young Howell climbed into the tub and his father let him down slowly.

From the sound of heavy breathing, which his father could hear as he bent over and tried to see to the bottom of the hole, it could be told that young Howell was in danger.  He was accordingly hoisted up.  He was almost unconscious when he reached the top.  Just as he was about to be grasped by his father, he collapsed altogether and tumbled headlong into the deep hole.

The elder Howell lowered himself into the well to rescue his son.  He found him lying still at the bottom.  The air was son heavy, however, that he, too, was overcome.  When finally neighbors had been called and the forms of both men were brought to the surface of the ground, they seemed to be dead.  Artificial respiration was tried on them, but it did no good, and the effort to revive them was abandoned.
