Robert Eugene LAIRSONBeattyville Enterprise (Beattyville, KY)
Thursday, 4 January 1968A former patient of Eastern State Hospital was disappeared from a local rest home Thursday morning, was found frozen to death yesterday afternoon on a Parkers Mill Road farm.
Eugene Lairson, 36, was pronouced dead about 2:30 p.m. by Coroner Chester Hager. Hager said the man apparently froze to death sometime Thursday night.
A staff member of the rest home told Hager that Lairson had "wandered away and disappeared after breakfast Thursday."
The man had been sent to the rest home from Eastern State Hospital on a "trial basis," the coroner said.
Lairson was found about 2 p.m. in a field by two Beaumont Farm employees, Eugene Burgin and Opal Gains, who had driven to the field to feed stock.
In tracing Lairson's path, Hager reported, it seemed that the man had been following tracks left in the snow by a truck carrying feed to the stock Thursday morning.
Lairson was probably in "unfamiliar territory" and was perhaps following the truck tracks because he was lost, Hager added.
"Judging from the snow covering the body, it would seem that Lairson collapsed on the ground before or during the light snow that fell early Thursday night." Hager said.
Marks in the snow indicated that the man had fallen and then struggled to rise again but was unable to do so, the coroner remarked.
Lairson was from Leeco, Lee County, and is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ishael Lairson, Leeco; a sister, Mrs. Barbara Shelton, Leeco, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mollie Lairson, Stanton.
