Funeral services for Leonard Tackett, 64, were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 11, in the chapel at King Justice Funeral Home by the Rev. E. C. Burnside.

Mr. Tackett was born April 21, 1891 and died Feb. 9, after an illness of several months.

He was a retired oil worker, a farmer and engaged in lumber business and was a merchant near Vincent.

He is survived by his wife, Chloie Tackett, two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Hieronymus of Morrow, Ohio, and Mrs. Alene Asher of California; four brothers, Henry Tackett and Robert Tackett of Hamilton, Ohio, Ben Tackett of Indiana; Green Tackett of Travelers Rest; four sisters, Mrs. Maude Marcum of Ludlow, Ohio; Martha Tackett of Covington; Mrs. Lucy Gabbard of Earnestville, and Mrs. Little Brandenburg of Travelers Rest and one grandchild.

Burial was in the Gabbard cemetery at Travelers Rest with King Justice Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Florence Brandenburg TARTER

Thursday, 28 October 1954

Mrs. Florence Tarter, 40, wife of Dewey Tarter of New Richmond, Ohio and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Brandenburg of St. Helens, died at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, Oct. 12.

She was a graduate of the St. Helens High School and a member of the St. Helens Christian Church.

Other survivors are a son, Dewey Donald Tarter, of the U.S. Air Force; six sisters, Mrs. Nellie Sparks, St. Helens; Mrs. Hallie Leonard, Cincinnati, O.; Mrs. Inez Gabbard, Covington; Mrs. Verda Rogers, Leeco; Mrs. Bessie McCullough, Dunedin, Fla., and Mrs. Pearl Combs, of Pontiac, Mich.; three brothers, Ed and Grant of Dunedin, Fla.; and Chester of Beattyville.

Funeral services were held at the Summer Powers Funeral Home near New Richmond, O., and burial was in the Amelia Cemetery, Amelia, Ohio.

Elizabeth "Betty" Patton TAULBEE

Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Patton Taulbee, 84, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at the home by Rev. George Botner.

Mrs. Taulbee was born in Wolfe county, May 21, 1871 and died Dec. 7, 1955 in Middletown, Ohio.  She was a member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Walker Taulbee, one son, Archie Taulbee of Middletown, Ohio, two daughters, Mrs. Abbey Kearney of Chicago, Ill. and Mrs. Margaret Isaacs of Cincinnati, Ohio; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Taulbee Cemetery with Congleton Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Elsie TAULBEE

Thursday, 23 April 1953

Funeral services for Miss Elsie Taulbee were held at the home of her sister, Mrs. Shade Lutes of Vada, Monday, April 20.

Miss Taulbee was 60 and the daughter of the late Lee and Rebecca Taulbee of Wolfe county.  She died Saturday, April 18, and was preceded in death by two days by her sister, Mrs. Willie Little of Campton.

Miss Taulbee is survived by two brothers, Lewis Taulbee of Beattyville and John Taulbee of Mary; four sisters, Lillie and Lida Taulbee of Mary, Mrs. Susie Bach of Winchester, and Mrs. Florence Lutes of Vada.

Burial was in the Shade Lutes Cemetery at Vada with Dr. John L. Housley in charge of funeral services and King Justice Funeral Home in charge of burial arrangements.

Lewis TAULBEE

Lewis Taulbee, 75, died Monday at 6 p.m. in the Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington, after a long illness.

He was a native of Wolfe County a retired merchant.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Rose Taulbee, Beattyville; one son, Harold Taulbee, Beattyville; one daughter, Mrs. Gwendlyn McIntosh, Cincinnati; a niece, Mrs. Rose Nussbaum, Cincinnati; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Lutes, Beattyville and Miss Linda Taulbee, Muncie, Ind.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Newnam Funeral Home.

Rose May Lutes TAULBEE

Mrs. Rose May Lutes Taulbee, 92, of Beattyville, Ky., died January 24, 1999.

Born August 8, 1895, she was the daughter of James Lutes and Ella Lucas and the wife of Lewis Taulbee.  Mrs. Taulbee was a retired merchants and a member of the Beattyville Christian Church.

Survived by one son: Harold J. Taulbee, Beattyville, Ky.; one daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn Dobberstein, West Chester, O.; foster niece: Mrs. Rose Nussbaum, Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral servies were held Wednesday, January 27, 1988 at 2 p.m. in the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Adams officiating.  Burial followed in the Riverview Cemetery, Beattyville, with the Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Davis, Frank Kincaid, Ed Stamper, Von Abner, Jerry Best, David Ross served as pallbearers.

Ruby TAULBEE

Beattyville, Mar. 17 -- Ruby Taulbee, 10 years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Taulbee, was buried in the Riverview Cemetery yesterday afternoon.  Funeral services were held at the home by the Rev. Luther Newnam.

Ruby, a lovable child, was a pupil inthe Fourth grade of the Beattyville Graded school and an attendant of the St. Thomas' Episcopal Church.

Some two or three weeks ago she suffered an attack of pneumonia which resulted in her death at 2:20 o'clock Thursday morning.

Surviving are her parents, a sister, Miss Vesta Taulbee, and a brother, Leo Russell Taulbee.

Sana Tyree TAULBEE

Thursday, 26 June 1952

Mrs. Sana Taulbee, 66, wife of Wesley C. Taulbee of Clay City, passed away quietly at her home in that city Tuesday morning, June 17, after an illness of three years.

Funeral services were conductied at the Hazel Green Methodist Church on Thursday morning at 11 o'clock, with Re. McClain of Clay City bringing the message.  Burial followed immediately in the family cemetery at Insko under the direction of Wayne Cox Funeral Home, Irvine.

Pall bearers were D. C. Rose, E. T. Kash, Jasper Jones, John Coldiron and R. E. Buchanan.

Mrs. Taulbee is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Anita Salyer, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Lena Lane Van Cleve, Irvine; Mrs. Ruth Miller, Campton; Mrs. Esther Housemeyer, Rising Sun, Ind.; and Mrs. Regina Center, Milton, Ky.; and two sons, Bob of Clay City and Henry Bryan Taulbee of Dayton, Ohio.  Also, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild and other relatives and a host of friends.

Alpha TAYLOR

Funeral services for Miss Alpha Taylor, 70, were held at the home near Congleton Sunday afternoon, January 8, by the Rev. Sam Wilson.

The daughter of the late Orville and Sarah Hamilton Taylor, she was born near Levi in Owsley county.  Some 30 years ago she united with the Christian Church.  Miss Taylor had made her home with her late sister and brother in law, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Cooper, for several years.

Her nearest living relative is a brother, John Taylor, of Levi.

Burial was in the Cooper cemetery with Congleton Brothers funeral home in charge.

Aneita Gail TAYLOR

Thursday, 21 April 1955

Fourteen-year-old Gail Taylor was shot fatally at her home near Booneville Wednesday, April 13.  Gail, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vol Taylor of Scoville, was pronounced dead on arrival at a Beattyville physician's office.

A spokesman for the family said the girl shot herself accidently with an automatic pistol in the family residence at Scoville, about three miles from Booneville.

Her father is a brother of the late Owsley County Sheriff, Clarence Taylor who was slain along with a constable in an Owsley county shooting last spring.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Clifty Methodist Church, by Rev. Bob McClure, The Rev. Everett Ross, The Rev. Ed Mainous, and the Rev. J. H. Burton, The Rev. E. F. Burnside and The Rev. Timothy Terrill.  Burial was in the family cemetery at Scoville.

Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vol Taylor; a brother, Paul Taylor, Scoville; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Smith, Cincinnati; Paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ham Taylor, Booneville, and Maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Rowland, Scoville.

Congleton Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Clarence TAYLOR

Owsley County Sheriff, Constable Shot Fatally

Booneville, KY., March 27 1954
The sheriff of Owsley county and a constable were killed and a third man was wounded tonight in a shooting on the Buckhorn road about four miles east of Beattyville.

Constable Robert Hensley, 63, died instantly, and Sheriff Clarence Taylor, 43, succombed at about 10:30 o'clock tonight at Pattie A. Clay infirmary at Richmond.

The wouned man was identified as Clifton Gabbard, 25, who suffered a flesh wound in the leg.  He was jailed here, then transferred to the Lee County jail at Beattyville after questioning.  He was charged with being an accessory.

The major suspect in the case, Earl Baker, about 37, of Breathitt county, still was at large tonight.  State police said a warrant was issued charging him with murder.

Also questioned was Buster Moseley, who was believed to have been a witness.  He was jailed here on a public drunkenness charge.

State Police Sgt. William Newman said he understood the affray occurred after Sheriff Taylor and Constable Hensley, who were patrolling the Buckhorn road near the forks of Cow Creek, discovered a truck off the road in a ditch.

When the officers approached to investigate, Newman said he was told, an occupant of the truck opened fire with a .38-caliber pistol.

Hensley was shot through the heart and Taylor was wounded in the right chest, left arm and groin.

Gabbard was treated at a Beattyville physican's office and returned here for questioning.

Sheriff Taylor was unable to tell what happened.

Sheriff Taylor, a former shoemaker, had served a term as Owsley county jailer and took office as sheriff in January of this year.  He was an elder in the First Presybterian church of Booneville.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruth Taylor;  his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Ham Taylor, Owsley county;  two sons, Bobby and Stevie Taylor, and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Taylor;  two brothers, Robert Taylor, Owsley county, and Clyde Taylor, Paris, and a sister, Mrs. Laura Farmer, Cincinnati.

The body was removed to the Congleton Brothers funeral home at Beattyville.

Hensley, who lived on Cow Creek, is survived by his wife and daughter.  His body also was taken to the Congleton Brothers funeral home.

Ethel M. Caudill TAYLOR

Mrs. Ethel Caudill Taylor, 34, wife of Supt. Sam B. Taylor, was buried Sunday afternoon in the Riverview Cemetery following funeral services conducted at home.  The Rev. Albert C. Wildman, Booneville; Rev. I. H. Gabbard, Cow Creek, and Rev. Wm. R. Royce, Richmond, conducted the service.

Death came to Mrs. Taylor in a Lexinton hospital at one o'clock Friday afternoon following an operation that morning.  Physicians attributed her death to shock as she died two hours after coming from under the anesthetic.

Mrs. Taylor was a daughter of S. A. and Martha Deeds Caudill and was born in Owsley county.  She was married to Mr. Taylor in 1924 and is survived by her husband, a son and two daughters.  The son, Samuel Douglas, is 12 years old, Anna Boyd, 10, and Eilzabeth 6.  She is also survived by her parents, two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. C. C. Brandenburg, Earnestville; Miss Mona Caudill, Travelers Rest; Sidney and Virgil Caudill, Travelers Rest, and Waldo Caudill Cincinnati.

McDaniel TAYLOR

Pebworth, Aug. 12 -- Funeral services were held for McDaniel Taylor, 70, this afternoon at the home near Rocky Hill by Rev. D. W. Mainous, Proctor, and the Rev. W. L. Merrin, of Levi.  Mr. Taylor died Saturday, Aug. 10.  Burial was in the graveyard near where he lived on the G. T. Smith farm.

He was married to Miss Rachel Isaacs in 1887 who survives him.  He is also survived by two sons, Henry Taylor and Sam Taylor, of Levil and three daughters, Mrs. Lucy Brandenburg, Miss Elizabeth Taylor, Levi, and Mrs. Bernie Reynolds, Montgomery, Ohio.  Two brothers and two sisters survive him, William Taylor, Lerose; John Taylor, Levi; Mrs. John G. Cooper, Congleton, and Miss Alpha Taylor, of Levi.  There are also six grandchildren surviving him.

Rachel Isaacs TAYLOR

Rachel Isaacs Taylor was born Dec. 6, 1865, died at her home April 11, 1940 at the age of 75 years, 5 months, and 5 days.

She was married to Mack Taylor in the year of 1887, tothis union was born nine children six of whom preceded her to the grave.  She was a member of the Baptist church having joined that church when she was young, and she was faithful member since.

She leaves two sons, Henry and Sam, and one daughter, Elizabeth, of Levi; seven grandchildren, and several relatives and friends to mourn her loss.

Robert H. TAYLOR

St. Helens, July 3 -- Robert Taylor, 77, farmer of the Long Shoal community, died this morning at two o'clock following an illness of several months duration.

Mr. Taylor, a prominent farmer of Lee county, was born in Owsley County on Christmas Day, 1858.  He was a member of the Christian church, but his home was a Mecca to ministers of all denominations.

Details of the funeral were not complete this morning, but it is thought the service will be held at the residence, and perhaps, burial will be in the old family graveyard on Bufffalo in Owsley county.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jalia Bailey Taylor; three sons, Walker Taylor, Hazard; Sam B. Taylor, Superintendent of Lee County Schools, Beattyville, and Alex Taylor, St. Helens.  Three daughters, Mrs. D. S. Brandenburg, Beattyville; Mrs. Robert Campbell, Taylorsville, and Mis Inez Taylor, who is in Richmond attending college.  He is also survived by 11 grandchildren.

Samuel B. TAYLOR

Sam B. Taylor, 84, husband of Roberta Seat Taylor, 141 Hamilton Park, died Sat. morning at his residence after a long illness.

He retired in 1978 after serving 43 years in education, beginning as a teacher in Lee County followed by many years as a superintendent in the Lee County school system; and for the later 23 years he was in the Division of Supervision in the Dept. of Education in Frankfort.

Born in Owsley Co., KY, but spent most of his life in Lee Co., son of the late Robert and Jalie Bailey Taylor.  He attended Berea College, and received his A.B. degree from Eastern State University, and Masters Degree from the Univ. of Ky.  He was a charter member and organizing elder at Beaumont Presbyterian Church.

Other survivors are one son, Dr. Sam D. Taylor, Cherokee, IA; two daughters, Mrs. David A. (Ann) Comfort, Hartford, CT, Mrs. Jack L. (Betty) Rivers, Madison, IN; one sister, Mrs. John D. (Inez) Hieronymus, St. Petersburg, FL; seven grandchildren, Mrs. James (Deborah) Morgan, Slidell, LA, Mrs. Ray (Elizabeth) Payne, Henderson, KY, David L. Rivers, Connersville, IN, David Comfort, Bethlehem, PA, Mrs. Ben (Rebecca) Watson, Henderson, KY, Mariah Ann Rivers, Evansville, IN, Andrew Comfort, Hartford, CT; six great grandchildren: several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Mond. at the W. R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway conducted by Rev. D. Patrick Chamberlain, Beaumont Presbyterian Church, and Rev. Canon William D. Smith, Episcopal Church, with private burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park.  Friends may call 3-8 p.m. today with Masonic Services to be held at 6 p.m. today.

Casket bearers will be David L. Rivers, grandson, David A. Comfort, grandson, Ray Payne, grandson-in-law, Ben Watson, grandson-in-law, David Gourieux, nephew, and Larry Randolph, nephew.

Honorary bearers will be elders of the Beaumont Presbyterian Church and member of the Dept. of Education.

Bradley TERRY

Thursday, 5 October 1950

Funeral services for Bradley Terry, 29, were held Monday afternoon, Oct. 2, at the Heidelberg Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Anderson conducting the service.

Mr. Terry the son of Miles and Dora Barrett Terry was born August 26, 1921 and was fatally injured in a traffic accident on September 30, 1950.

He is survived by his daughter, Anna Lair Terry, his mother, Mrs. Dora Terry, four brothers, Daniel Terry, Mitchel Terry and Jackson Terry all of Heidelberg; four sisters, Mrs. Addie Lee of Mummie, Ky., Mrs. Mae Stamper of Heidelberg, Mrs. Mary Goosey and Mrs. Gracey Calvert of Louisville.

Burial was in the Brandenburg cemetery near Heidelberg with Congleton Brothers funeral home in charge.  Pallbearers were: Ernest Coomer, Ed Deaton, Brown Kerns, Tommy Brewer, Seldon Brewer, Brenton Frost, Woodrow Frost, and Manuel Felter.

Cleveland TERRY

Cleveland Terry, age 88, of Beattyville, KY, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at the residence of Mr. Terry's daughter.

He was born May 26, 1910, in Breathitt County, KY to the late Miles and Dora Barrett Terry.  He was a member of the United Pentecostal Church and a retired Pitman for Ky. Stone Co.  Mr. Terry was the husband of Mary Jane Newton.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Jane Terry, of Beattyville; six daughters, Mrs. Norma Mosley, Mrs. Ann Wilson, Mrs. Alice Reece, all of Beattyville, KY; Mrs. Cora Collins, Mrs. Callie Bailey and Mrs. Emma Messer, all of Richmond, IN; three sons, Bradley Terry, Beattyville, KY; Willie Terry, Hargett, KY; and Chester Terry, Richmond, IN; 23 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Mary Goosey, Louisville, KY; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Terry was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Dora Estes; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jimmy Overbee.  Burial followed in the Brandenburg-Quillen Cemetery located at Heidelberg.  Pallbearers were Rick Reece, Jason Reece, Leslie Estes, Jr., Jerry Messer, Jr., Terry Messer and Garry Wilson.

Newnam Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

David TERRY

The Beattyville Enterprise
Thursday, 17 June 1982

David Terry, who just last month graduated from Lee County High School with the Class of 1982, was killed Tuesday night in a one car accident on Route 11, five miles north of Booneville, in Owsley County.

According to officials in Booneville, Terry's car hit an embankment and turned over landing on it's top and coming to rest on the surface of the road.  Terry was killed instantly, officials told The Enterprise, from head and internal injuries.  The accident occurred about 11:00 p.m.

Terry, who playedd starting guard with the Lee County High School Bobcats Basketball team for most of his years at the school is survived by his mother, Ruby Terry of Beattyville and father, James Earl Terry of Heidelberg.

Funeral services for Terry, who turned 18 years of age last October 9, are tentatively scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 18 at the Beattyville Baptist Church on the Booneville Road, with Rev. Dennis L. Brewer officiating.  Visitation at McKee is set for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, at the Justice Memorial Funeral Home in McKee, Kentucky.  Additional visiting hours have also been set between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Beattyville Baptist Church on Friday, immediately prior to the funeral services.

Mollie Reece TERRY

Mrs. Billie Terry Dies Suddenly

Mrs. Mollie Reece Terry died suddenly at her home about 3:30 p.m. December 28.

She was the daughter of Lucien and Jane Fox Reece, and was 37 years of age.  She had been suffering from heart trouble for some time, but hadn't seemed noticably worse until she was suddenly stricken.

Survivors are her parents, and husband, five daughters, Nettie, Shirley, Allie Joan, Julia and Ena Fay; three sons, Herman, Hubert and Clifford, all at home.  Three brothers, Fred Reece, Connersville, Ind., Jesse Reece, Heidleberg and Tom Reece, Beverley, Ky.  One sister, Mrs. Claude Vickers, Stone Coal, Ky.

She was a member of the First Church of God and attended services at Yellow Rock.  Rev. Ramah Johnson conducted the funeral service which was held at the Heidelberg Baptist  church.  Interment was in the Brandenburg cemetery at Heidelberg.
 
 

Ruby Elizabeth Lamb Cox TERRY

Ruby Elizabeth Lamb Cox Terry was born in Jackson County KY on May 20,1934 and went to a permanent home in glory on 12/31/2022 at the age of 88 years, 7 months, 11 days.

She was preceded in death by her son, David Terry and granddaughter, Angie Reece; her parents: Greely Hampton and Sarah Frances (Scenters) Lamb and all her siblings: James Everett Lamb, Edwin Lamb, Anna Norris, Flora Mae Cain and Tressie Rose.

Ruby is survived by her daughters, Shirley Ann Cox Reece of Ida May KY and Alice Frances Cox Click (Jim) of Waco KY and her son Randy Dewayne Terry (Kelly) of Waco KY, as well as grandchildren: Timmy Reece, Kendra Robertson, Stephanie Combs, Ryan Terry, Kayne Terry, Jazmyn Mitchell. Great grandchildren are: Adam Reece, Grace Robertson, Micah Robertson, Alyssa Robertson and Hunter Robertson. Great-greatgrandchildren include Nathan and Owen Reece, Matthew and Colton Combs. Many, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends were greatly loved as well.

Ruby was a busy homemaker and mother of four. She worked from an early age in restaurants and factories, later making a career as a nurse aide in nursing homes and private home care. She was a mentor and teacher to those coworkers, with mutual admiration.

Services officiated by Brother Garrett Thomas at Beattyville First Church of God (1063 Highway 11 S Beattyville KY - by the pond) on 01/02/2023 at 12 noon. Visitation will start at 11 am for family and friends. Burial will follow the service at Quillen’s Cemetery, Heidelberg, KY. Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Emma Wyatt THACKER

Mrs. Emma Wyatt Thacker, 70, passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Walker Newton, of Yellow Rock, Thursday, Dec. 29, after a long illness of cancer.

She was born in Lee county the daughter of Billie and Louisa Wyatt.

She was the widow of the late Green Thacker, and leaves eight children, four sons and four daughters.  They are Luke, Lucien, Ova and Rufus Thacker, all of Bear Track, and Mrs. Daisy Smallwood, Yellow Rock, Mrs. Edna Estes, Fox, Ky., Mrs. Loueda Riley, Crystal, and Mrs. Josie Riley of Bear Track.

Burial was in the Beatty Place cemetery Friday, Dec. 30.

Jackie C. Thacker, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Thacker of Zachariah, was fatally injured Monday on a lease near Leeco while engaged in "pulling" an oil well.

According to Luther Newnam who took the injured had to a Lexington hospital, Thacker and other workers had pulled a 5 inch casing out of the well and had it suspended in the air.  Something went wrong, Newnam said, and the pipe fell striking Thacker on the head and shoulder.

Thacker was immediately taken to the hospital but was pronounce dead on arrival.

Funeral services will be held for Thacker Wednesday at the Zoe Church of God with the Rev. W. L. Bloomfield officiating.  Burial will be at Zachariah with Congleton Brothers Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Nanny Thacker, 75, formerly of Beattyville, died Sunday at Dayton Ohio after a two year illness.

She was a member of the Mt. Olive Christian Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Russell Smith, Dayton, O.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Congleton Bros. Funeral Home by the Rev. Eugene Reece, and burial was in the Howell Cemetery, with Congleton Bros. Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Willard Charles THACKER

Willard Charles Thacker, 25, of Irvine, Ky., died Friday, August 10, 1984 at 2:45 p.m.

Born June 15, 1959, he was the son of Lucian Thacker and Nannie Stamper.

Survived by his wife, Mrs. Lois B. Thacker, Irvine; one son, Lucian Scott Thacker, Irvine; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lucian Thacker, Beattyville; three brothers, Ray Thacker, Beattyville; Ellis Thacker, Old Landing; Carl Thacker, Beattyville; five sisters, Mrs. Irene Shuler, Irvine; Mrs. Ruby Benton, Irvine; Mrs. Bonnie Murphy, Irvine; Mrs. Nellie Estes, Irvine; Mrs. Lillie Benton, Beattyville.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 12, 1984 at 2:00 p.m. at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James F. Smith officiating.  Burial followed in the Beatty Place Cemetery, Yellow Rock Road., with the Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  The Rev. James F. Smith officiated.

Mr. Thacker was a lineman with Palimar Electric.

Claiborn THARP

Claiborn Tharp, father of Jesse Tharp, Beattyville, died at the Veterans hospital in Lexington on Tuesday, August 4, where he had been a patient the past three years.  Mr. Tharp was 82.

A native of Estill county, he was the son of the late Judge A. J. and Nancy Ann Moore Tharp.  He was a veteran of the Spanish American War.

His wife Mrs. Joanna Tharp, preceded him in death five years ago.  The Tharp's son, Edward O., was the first Estill county by killed in World War I.

The body is at the Lewis Funeral Home, Irvine.

Survivors include two sons, Jesse Tharp, and Jennings Tharp, Richmond; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, also a brother, Russell Tharp of Hamilton, Ohio.

Funeral services were held at the Providence Baptist Church at Winston on Thursday morning at 10:00 o'clock.  The Rev. Roy C. Richardson officiated.  Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Jesse Muncie THARP

Beattyville - Jesse Muncie Tharp, 83, a former Beattyville mayor, died yesterday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center off Cooper Drive in Lexington.

Tharp was mayor for several years in the 1950s.

He also once owned a concrete block company, and he operated Beattyville's first Western Auto Store for a couple years in the 1940s.  He also worked at the Beattyville post office.

Tharp served as the director of the Beattyville Housing Project at one time.  He was in the Army during World War I and the Navy during World War II.

He was a member and former elder of Beattyville Christian Church and was a member of American Legion Post No. 84.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Flynn of Beattyville; three sons, Cecil Tharp and O'Rear Tharp, both of Dayton, Ohio, and Clyde Tharp of Effingham, Ill.; a brother; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Newnam Funeral Home.  Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Sunday.

Ben Thomas, 76, of Beattyville, retired farmer and a member of the Bethlehem Christian Church in Lee County died early Monday morning at the Clark County Hospital in Winchester.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Evoline Thomas; six sons, Eugene and Nevelle Thomas, Beattyville; Ova Thomas, Winchester; Wilgus Thomas, Chicago; Ben Thomas, Dayton, Ohio; and Clifford Dale Thomas, Piqua, Ohio; six daughters, Mrs. Harvey Cundiff and Mrs. Clayton Judd, Primrose, Mrs. Eva Schultz and Mrs. Don Booth, Hamilton, Ohio; Mrs. Ervin Davidson, Batesville, Ind.; and Mrs. Raymond Tucker, Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. R. B. Kincaid and Mrs. Topsey Cable, Beattyville and Mrs. Ollie McIntosh, Winchester; one brother, Logan Thomas, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at the St. Helens Christian Church by the Rev. Sam Wilson.  Burial was in the Thompson Cemetery with Congleton Brothers Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Charles E. "Charlie" Thomas, 69, of Beattyville, Ky. died Saturday, November 14, 1981, at the VA Hospital, Lexington, Ky.

Born September 6, 1912 to Millard Thomas and Cora Cornelius, he was a member of the Beattyville Christian Church.

He is survived by one son, Murphy Lee Thomas; one sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Snowden, Beattyville; three brothers, Sam Thomas, Dunedin, Florida; Price Thomas, Cleveland, Ohio; and William Thomas, Beattyville.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 17, 1981 at 1 p.m. at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Ginnan officiating.  Burial followed in the Old Snowden Cemetery, Pine Grove, with Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Clarence "Fiddling Slim" THOMAS

Clarence Thomas, 28, of Clark county, died Tuesday night at 11:30 o'clock at the Clark  County hospital from head injuries suffered in a head-on automobile collision Sunday on state highway No. 15.  His companion, Hobart Hoskins, 45, of Slade, was killed instantly in the wreck.

Thomas was a well-known violinist and went by the name of "Fiddling Slim"  He played with the All Night Ramblers and the Kentucky Woodchoppers.

He was the son of John D. and Rebecca Thomas.

He is survived by three brothers, Clyde Thomas, of Heidelberg, William and Leon [sic] Thomas of Winchester; and a sister, Mrs. Spiral Smith, Jr. of Winchester.

Winchester, Ky., March 6 -- Funeral services for Clarence Thomas, 29, of Slade and Clark county, who died Wednesday of injuries received in an automobile accident Sunday, were scheduled this afternoon at the home of R. P. Hedger, 145 Cook avenue, Winchester.  The Rev. Paul Montgomery, pastor of the Central Baptist church, was to officate, and burial was to be in the Winchester cemetery.

Clyde Thomas, of 1959 Mark Ave., Lexington, died at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington after a long illness.

He was a native of Lee County, a son of the late James and Rebecca Mann Thomas, and a retired merchant.  He operated a storn on North Main Street here for a number of years.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Margarita Wheeler Thomas; three sons, Timothy Thomas, Clark County; James Thomas, Ezel, and Michael Thomas, Berry; a sister, Mrs. Mae Smith, Winchester; a brother, Lewis Thomas, Winchester; nine grandchildren, including Michael A. Thomas, Winchester, and Adrian "Brian" and David Thomas, both of Clark County, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Scobee Funeral Home by the Rev. Earl Barnett.  Burial will be in the Winchester Cemetery.

Cora Cornelius THOMAS

Funeral services for Cora Thomas, 85, were held Saturday, August 27, at 2 p.m. at the home by Rev. Sam Wilson.

Mrs. Thomas, the daughter of the late William and Mary Ann Cornelius was born in Lee county Dec. 2, 1868 and died Thursday, August 25, 1955 at a nursing home in Lexington, after a short illness.  She was a member of the Christian Church for 69 years.

She is survived by six sons, Walter Thomas of Stay, Barney Thomas, William Thomas and Charley Thomas of Beattyville, Sam Thomas of Norwood, Ohio and Price Thomas of Cleveland, Ohio, one daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Snowden of Middletown, Ohio, one brother, William Cornelius of Beattyville, 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Snowden Cemetery with Congleton Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Garfield Thomas, 85 of St. Helens, died Saturday enroute to a physician's office of an apparent heart attack.

He was a member of the Beattyville First Church of God.

Survivors are two sons, Clarence Thomas, St. Helens, and Guy Thomas, Dayton, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Elva Sullivan, Covington and Mrs. Gladys Davis, Primrose; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Creech, Jeff; Mrs. Jane Coomer, Heidelberg; Mrs. Susie Thompson, Winchester; and Mrs. Georgia Angel, Hazard; a brother, Jim Thomas, Winchester; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Beattyville First Church of God by the Rev. Walter Strong.  Burial was in the St. Helens Cemetery by the Newnam Funeral Home.

Middletown, O., Mar. 13 - Funeral services for the Rev. George H. Thomas, 80, were held at the Church of Christ at 1 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. W.H. Thompson officiating.  Burial followed immediately in the Middletown Cemetery.

Mr. Thomas, a retired minister, died at his home Sunday night at 6 o'clock following an illness of some five or six years.  He came to Middletown 25 years ago from Beattyville, Ky., where he was active in the ministry all of his early life.

A man of kindly demeaner, Mr. Thomas won a place of high estimation among many friends here who sympathize with the widow, Mrs. Susan Thomas, two daughters, Mrs. Callie Horton and Mrs. Nettie Dubusk, Middletown, four sons, Rev. G.T. Thomas, Portsmouth, O., Joseph and James, Cincinnati, and John, of Middletown.

Mr. Thomas was born near Pine Grove, Lee County, Ky., a son of Joseph and Betsey Thomas.  Three brothers survive him, Sam and Millard Thomas, Pine Grove, Neal Thomas, Hamilton, O., and one sister, Mrs. Lucy Hall, Proctor, Ky.

James Thomas, 80, a retired railroad emloyee, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday (April 25) at his home in Winchester after a long illness.  He was a native of Lee County.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Mae Smyth, Winchester; two sons, Clyde Thomas, Lexington, and Lewis Thomas, Winchester; a sister, Mrs. Jane Coomer, Heidelberg; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Joseph Pryse THOMAS

Funeral services with Masonic rites were held Saturday afternoon for Judge Joseph Pryse Thomas, 76, who was killed last Thursday July 12, by an L & N pasenger train while attempting to cross the track.  he was knocked about 20 feet and died instantly.

Judge Thomas was born near Fincastle on December 9, 1875 and was the son of the late James M. and Catherine Thompson Thomas.  He began teaching in the public schools of this county at the age of 16 and taught for 27 years with the exception of about three years when he was engaged in the photography business at Paintsville, Ky.

He was elected County School Superintendent in November 1917, taking office January 1, 1918, which office he held for twelve and one-half years.  In 1941 he was elected County Judge of this county, assuming the duties of the office in January 1942.  At the end of his term as county judge he retired to private life.  During his term as county judge he called in all interest bearing warrants and paid them off in an amount of $66, 480 and while superintendent of schools, with a tax rate on each $100 of 30 cents for eight years when it was raised to 50 cents and no school poll tax, he saved and turned over to his successor in office $33,000, while his teachers were paid more than any of the surrounding counties and built a number of new school buildings.

He was vice president of the Peoples Exchange Bank and was for many years a director of that bank.  He was a past Master of St. Helens Lodge No. 84 F. & A. M. of which he was a member for 45 years.  He was a very conservative business man and was during his life much interested in farming.

Burial was in old Thomas Buryng Ground near his home at Airdale, with Rev. J. H. Hieronymus in charge of the services.

Logan THOMAS

Beattyville, Ky., Thursday, Feb. 16 - Logan Thomas, vice president of the People Exchange Bank of this city and leading citizen, died this morning at his home on his farm four miles east of this city at seven o'clock.

Mr. Thomas had been ill for many months and had retired from active banking circles.  He was for years one of the leading business men of Beattyville having been in the coal mining business many years ago and later a banker.

He was the son of David Thomas and Demia McGuire Thomas, both of whom preceded him in death many years ago.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice Hammons Thomas and a small son, six years of age; one sister, Mrs. Charles W. Sale of this city and numerous relatives and a host of friends.

His death will be mourned by the citizens of Lee county by all of whom he was known and admired and respected.

The news of his death come to The Enterprise just as it goes to press and before the funeral arrangements have been made.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Durbin Thomas were held Wednesday, July 16, at the St. Theresa Church near Heidelberg, by Father Poole.  Mrs. Thomas was 80 years of age at her passing.

The daughter of Joe and Shrillida Wagers Durbin, Mrs. Thomas was born in Lee county but at the time of her death July 13, was living in Fairburn, Georgia.

She is survived by her husband, L. P. Thomas of Fairburn, and one stepdaughter.

Burial was in the Davis Cemetery near Heidelberg with funeral arrangements by Congleton Brothers Funeral Home.

Millard Fillmore THOMAS

Millard Fillmore Thomas, 78 years old, died at his home at Pine Grove Saturday, June 18th.  Blood poisoning was the cause of death.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the home at 2:30 by Rev. Geo. Botner with the Jr. O.U.A.M. service at the grave.  Burial was in the Snowden graveyard.

He was married to Miss Cora Cornelius October 26, 1886, and was a member of the Christian Church, having been for the past 45 years.  For the past 33 years he has been a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M.

He leaves surviving him his wife and seven children: Walter, of Stay; Barney, Pryse, Charley, and William, of Pine Grove; Sam, of Hamilton, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Ann Snowden, of Pine Grove.  Three brothers, Neal Thomas, of Camden, Ohio; Bill  Thomas, Red Lick, and Sam Thomas, Pine Grove; 13 grandchildren, and numerous relatives and friends.

Winchester, Ky., April 3 -- Mrs. Rebecca Thomas, 65, wife of James Thomas, died at 3 a.m. today at her home, 33 Hill street, after a long illness.

She was a native of Lee county, daughter of the late Mack and Mary Couch Mann, and a member of the Hill Street Church of God.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Clyde and Lewis Thomas, and a daughter, Mrs. May Smith, all of Winchester, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Hill Street Church of God, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. J. L. Guthrie.  The body is at the residence.

Susan Ellen Gumm Fraley THOMAS

Pleasant Flat, Feb. 20 - Mrs. Ellen Gum Thomas, 81 years old, was buried today in the Akers graveyard at 2:00 o'clock this afternoon, funeral services being conducted by the Rev. Wm. Edwards.

Mrs. Thomas died at her home in Wolfe county, near Torrent, Sunday afternoon, following a short illness of pneumonia.  She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Berry Gum and was born in Lee county.  In 1871 she was married to Henry Fraley who died some 29 years ago.  In 1906 she was married to Henry Thomas and he died 17 years ago.  For 50 years she had been a member of the Christian Church.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by six children of her first marriage; Thomas G. Fraley, Hamilton, Ohio; Mrs. Willie Day, Oil; John P. Fraley, Airdale; Mrs. Alf Mastin, Ravenna; James "Dock" Fraley, Torrent.  She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Nannie Couch, Stearns; also 55 grandchildren, and 57 great-grandchildren.

Vincent THOMAS

Judge Vincent Thomas, 79, died suddenly at his home near Levi at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 25.  Death was due to a heart attack.

Judge Thomas was formerly County Judge of Owsley County and for many years was a school teacher in Owsley and Lee Counties.

Funeral services were held at the Levi Pennington Church yesterday morning at 11 o'clock by the Revs. C. R. Blaine and Luther Newnam.  Burial will be in the Pendergrass Cemetery at Pleasant Grove.  Garrett Funeral Home of Beattyville will have charge.

Survivors include three sons: Marcus, Bill, and Roscoe of Ohio and three daughters, Mrs. Preston Mainous, Mrs. Elisha Bowman and Mrs. J. O. Colyer.

Funeral services for Walter Thomas, 65, were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 5, at the King Justice Funeral Chapel by the Rev. I. H. Gabbard and the Rev. Sam Wilson.

Mr. Thomas, the son of the late Millard and Cora Thomas was born December 22, 1890 and died Saturday, March 3 at the Veterans Hospital in Louisville after an illness of several months.

He was a retired farmer and a veteran of World War I, member of the Christian Church of Pine Grove.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gallie [sic] Thomas of Stay; one daughter, Gloria Thomas of Richmond; five brothers, Barney, Bill and Charley Thomas of Beattyville; Sam Thomas of Norwood, Ohio and Price Thomas of Cleveland, Ohio and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ann Snowden of Middletown, Ohio.

Burial was in the Snowden Cemetery at Pine Grove with King Justice Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

William THOMAS

Winchester, Ky., Dec. 11 -- Mrs. Rebecca Thomas, 55 Hill street, has been notified by the Ward Department that her son, Pfc. William Thomas, was killed in action Nov. 23 while serving in France.

Pvt. Thomas entered the Army in July 1941, and received his training in Tennessee and New York.  He had been overseas 18 months.

Winchester, Ky., Feb. 2 -- The body of Pfc William Thomas, 20, killed in action Nov. 23, 1944, in Europe, is expected to arrive here at 11:30 a.m. Thursday and will be taken to the Scobee funeral home.

A native of Lee county, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Thomas of Winchester and had been awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of God y the Rev. J. L. Guthrie, pastor.  Burial will be in the Winchester cemetery.

In addition to his parents, survivors include two brothers, Clyde and Lewis Thomas, both of Winchester, and a sister, Mrs. Mae Smith, also of Winchester.

Miney Thompson, 83, died August 1 at the home of her daughter, Molly Medcalf in Hazard.

Mrs. Thompson had been ill for several months and had been living with her son Harrison Whisman of Beattyville until she went to Hazard last Thursday.

She is survived by three sons, Harrison Whisman, Joe Whisman, and Stanley Whisman, all of Beattyville; one daughter, Molly Medcalf, Hazard.  one sister, Sarah Vanderpool, Cincinnati, and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was August 5 at the home of Harrison Whisman.  Services were conducted by the Rev. R. B. Baker, and burial was in the Whisman Cemetery at St. Helens.

Arrangements were by King Justice Funeral Home.

Ernest M. Thompson, 22, died at his residence, 424 Morgan avenue, at 5:30 o'clock today, after an illness of several months.

He is survived by his father, J. S. Thompson; one brother, Junis Thompson; three sisters, Mrs. Julia William, Mrs. Jon Peck and Mrs. Emmett Parks, all of Lexington or Fayette county.

Mr. Thompson was a native of St. Helens, Ky., but had lived in Lexington since childhood.  He was the son of J. S. and Margaret Cramer [sic] Thompson.

The body was moved to the funeral home of Anglin and Boden.

Mrs. Mary Price Thompson, wife of Robert Thompson, died at her home in Beattyville at 8:30 o'clock Wednesday night, March 17 following an illness of approximately one year.

Born in Lee county, she was married to Mr. Thompson on May 6, 1906.  For a number of years they resided at St. Helens and in 1926 moved to Beattyville.  She was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Funeral services were conducted at the St. Helens Presbyterian Church at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon by the Ven. George E. Long of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, assisted by Rev. Clark D. Benson, pastor of the St. Helens Presbyterian Church.  Burial was in the St. Helens cemetery with Congleton Bros. in charge.

Pallbearers were Sam B. Taylor, A. B. Cox, W. A. Lyons, Clayton Congleton, Alex H. Taylor, Henry Barrett, George Hogan and J. Pryse Thomas.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W. A. Whitehouse, Louisville; Mrs. B. F. Oldinsky, Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Mrs. Russel Sames, Louisville, and three sons, Pvt. Bert H. Thompson, Fort Riley, Kansas; Billy Thompson, Beattyville, and Charles Thompson of Georgia.

Mrs. Nannie A. Thompson, of Richmond, widow of J. B. Thompson, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Booneville home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Paul Campbell, following a lingering illness.

Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. William R. Royce, of Richmond; and a great-granddaughter, Miss Freda Campbell.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at the Big Hill Avenue Christian Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. A. C. Duncan and the Rev. J. H. Burton of Booneville.  Burial in Richmond Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tom Emmons, L.D. Maggard, Harold Whitaker, Cecil R. Wills, Homer Purkey and Elliott Newly Jr.

Funeral services for Robert C. Thompson were held Thursday, February 21 at the St. Helens Presbyterian Church by Rev. Boaz Smith.

Mr. Thompson, the son of the late Savanah [sic] and Sarah Arnold Thompson, was born at St. Helens on February 15, 1885, and deceased this life at Louisville on February 18.  he was 67 years of age.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Annice Rickets of Hialeah, Florida, Mrs. Agnes Oldinsky of Fort Knox, Ky., and Mrs. Russell Sams of Fort Lewis, Washington; three sons, Charles Thompson of Washington, D.C., Bert Thompson of Fort Wadsworth, N.Y., and William Thompson of Dewitt, Ky.; one brother, Brownlow Thompson of Bowen, Ky.

Funeral services for Samuel A. Thompson, cashier of the Lee County Commercial Bank, who died at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, were held Sunday, May 6 at the Edmonton Presbyterian church at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. J. W. Barton.

A native of Metcalf county, Mr. Thompson had been associated with the bank here for 24 years.  He was an elder and treasurer of the McGuire Memorial Presbyterian Church, a member of the Proctor Lodge No. 231 F & A M, Beattyville Chapter No. 232 O. E. S., Beattyville Council No. 7 Jr. O. U. A. M., and Rainbow Council No. 129 D. of A.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Thompson of Edmonton; his wife, Mrs. Nell B. Thompson; two daughters, Freddie and Anette Thompson, all of Beattyville; four brothers, John, Phil, Billy, and Woodrow Thompson, all of Edmonton; two sisters, Mrs. Jack Hubbard of Munfordville and Mrs. A. A. Page of Pikeville, Ky.

Brief rites were held Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the McGuire Memorial Presbyterian Church by Rev. Boaz Smith.

Burial was in the Summer Shade Cemetery near Edmonton, Ky., with funeral arrangements by Congleton Brothers Funeral Home.

Other survivors include a brother, Danny Thorpe; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Thorpe, and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Della Jewell, Beattyville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Beattyville Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Edward Gayhart.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Tony Jackson, Lloyd Thacker, Charlie Bush and Gene Gabbard.  The body is at the Congleton Bros. Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Leonard O. Thurston, 56, were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 17 at the Central Baptist Church at Corbin, by the Rev. Bill Jones.

Mr. Thurston, the son of Mrs. W. J. Thurston and the late William J. Thurston, was born in Jackson, Ga., November 12, 1900 and died at the Oneida Hospital, November 15, after an illness of several month.

He was a member of the Central Baptist Church.

He is survived by one son, Leonard Thurston, jr., of Madisonville; one daughter, Mrs. June Conyers, Louisville; his mother, Mrs. W. J. Thurston, Corbin; two brothers, Jack Thurston and Thomas R. Algin Tincher, 63, native of Lee county, died at his home in Middletown, Ohio, Saturday afternoon at 5:40 of a heart attack.

The body was brought to Beattyville Tuesday.  Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Donald A. Nash at the Pennington Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock and burial was in the Riverview Cemetery.

Mr. Tincher is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carlie Howerton Tincher, of Middletown, and a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Sizelove, of Baltimore, Md., and two grandchildren.

He was a member of the Christian church, and had been in the oil and coal business for the past 20 years.

Beattyville, Dec. 1 -- Funeral services were held this afternoon for Mrs. Genia Tincher, 32, at her home in Proctor by the Rev. F. J. Drew of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.  Burial was in the Proctor graveyard.  Mrs. Tincher died at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon of carcinoma of the liver.

Mrs. Tincher was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Granville Cole and the widow of Lex R. Tincher, who was a son of William and Maggie Daugherty Tincher.  He was a veteran of the World War who died several years ago.

Mrs. Tincher is survived by a daughter and two sons, her parents, one brother and two sisters.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of G. P. Congleton, undertaker.

Funeral services for Henry Tincher were held Wednesday, July 30, at the home of Rev. George Botner.

Mr. Tincher, the son of the late Randolph and Rebecca Howell Tincher, was born in Lee county, November 28, and died at his home near Idamay, July 28.  He was 79.

Mr. Tincher had been a member of the Christian Church since 1918.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rachel Tincher, three daughters, Miss Mattie Lou Tincher and Mrs. May Taylor of Florida, and Mrs. Brethlen of Dayton, Ohio.

Other survivors include two stepdaughters, three stepsons, two sisters and seven grandchildren.

Burial was in the Fraley Cemetery with Congleton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tincher, the son of the late James and Susanna Gordon Tincher, was born in Lee County December 21, 1875 and died at his home, Friday, April 13, after an illness of five years.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the Elk Lick Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Etta Tincher, two sons, James Tincher, Jr. and Wilgus Tincher, both of Levi, and one daughter, Mrs. Agnes Lynch of Levi, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services for Canada Tincher, 84, were held last Saturday by Rev. Sam Wilson near Pebworth and burial was nearby.

Mr. Tincher, the son of the late James and Susanne Gordon Tincher, was found dead in the yard of his home in the Cross Roads community Thursday morning, his birthday.  He was born February 23, 1866.  Death was from exposure according to Coroner Chester McIntosh.

Mr. Tincher is survived by one sister, Mrs. Nannie Cornelius, and a brother, James Tincher, several nephews and nieces.

Laura Agnes Tirey TINCHER

Laura Agnes Tincher, widow of William Tincher and the daughter of the late Oscar and Frances Moore Tirey was born in Owsley County, Kentucky on October 1, 1928 and departed this life in Booneville, Kentucky on February 4, 2023 at the age of 94 years, 4 months, and 3 days.

She was a homemaker and a member of the McGuire Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Tincher leaves behind her two children, Larry Tincher and Patricia Thomas; three grandchildren, Shannon Voight and husband Cory, Bronwyn Miller and husband Kyle, and Adam Thomas; seven great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Tincher was preceded in death by one son, Gregory Keith Tincher.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 7th at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.  Funeral services will immediately follow at 1:00 with burial in the Tincher Cemetery, Hwy 587.

Mrs. Lula Tincher, 84, of Beattyville died Sunday, September 24 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

She was the widow of Tolby Tincher and the daughter of Houston and Ann Brandenburg.

Mrs. Tincher is survived by two sons, Raymond and William; one brother, Miles Brandenburg; three sisters, Retta Fox, Girlie Cooper, and Alpha Bailey; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday, September 27, at 10 a.m. in the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Nawyn presiding.  Burial was in the Tincher Cemetery.

She was a native of Owsley County and a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church, Carlisle.

Survivors include a son, Wilgus Edward Tincher, Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Reece, Carlisle; her mother, Mrs. Mattie Herndon, Lexington; a brother, Charles Herndon, Memphis, TN; fur sisters, Miss Bessie Herndon, Lexington; Mrs. Silas Wilson, Mrs. Jack Pennock, and Mrs. Richard Riley, all of Lexington; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Little Patricia Ann Tincher, month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Tincher, Beattyville, was buried Thursday afternoon, February 8, at 2 o'clock.

Patricia Ann was born on January 5 and passed away at the home of her parents February 6.  She died of bronical pneumonia.

In addition to her parents she is survived by two brothers and two sisters, the names of whom were not available to the Enterprise.

Survivors include four sons, Fred and Herman Tincher, Cincinnati;  Matt Tincher, Covington, and Ellis Tincher, Moses Lake, Wash.;  four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Goe, Gulfport, Miss.;  Mrs. Louise Suttle, Cincinnati, and Mrs. Faye Butler and Mrs. Betty Qualls, Heidelberg;  three brothers, William Venable, Richmond;  Matt Venable, Vincent, and Rollo Venable, Norwood, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Fowler, Beattyville, and Mrs. Ethel Fraley, Winchester.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Heidelberg Christian church by the Rev. George Botner.  Burial will be in the Farley cemetery at Heidelberg.  The body was removed to the residence from the Congleton Brothers funeral home.

Sarah Estes TINCHER

Mrs. Sarah Estes Tincher, 85, widow of Asa L. Tincher, died at her home in Beattyville November 20, of pneumonia.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the grave and burial was in the Riverview cemetery.  The Rev. Luther Newnam preached the funeral.

Mrs. Tincher had been a member of the Beattyville Christian church for 35 years and a member of that faith for 72 years.

About the year 1874 [sic] she was married to Asa L. Tincher, a Union soldier, and became the mother of three sons, only one of whom survive her.  Her husband died 34 years ago.

Algin Tincher, the only surviving son lives in Beattyville, a brother, Moses Estes lives at Williba.  Only three grandchildren survive her.

Beattyville - Tolby Tincher, 80, of Beattyville, died at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, after a short illness.  He was a farmer, native of Lee County and a member of the Christian Church.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lula Tincher; two sons, Raymond Tincher, Winchester, Ohio, and William Tincher, Beattyville; a daughter, Mrs. Oda Quillen, Heidelberg; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Smith, Louisville, and Mrs. Demia Gilley, Maytown, and seven grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Edwin Grigsby.  Burial will be in Tincher Cemetery.  The body is at the residence and will be returned to the funeral home at 2 p.m. today.

Bearers will be Stanley Thomas, Ance and Ottis Brandenburg, Clint Caudill, Ed Brandenburg, and Sam Whicker.  Honorary bearers will be Charlie Kidd, John McGuire, Randy Smyth, Carl Snowden, Anderson Rowland and George Noe.

Chester TIPTON

Funeral services with the Rev. Sam Wilson officiating were held here Tuesday for Chester Tipton, 36, who died Saturday night in a Richmond hospital.

Chester became ill Saturday morning and was taken to the hospital in the afternoon where he failed to respond to medical treatment.  The time of his death was listed at near midnight.

For the past 14 years Chester served as Circuit Court Clerk of this county and in the recent Primary Election of August 4, received the Republican nomination for the office again.  He had many friends and was known far and wide of his willingness to accommodate persons in need of help.  His familiar figure and friendly face will be missed from the courthouse for a long time to come.

Chester was buried in the Tipton family cemetery near Millers Creek with the King Justice Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  Serving as active pallbearers were Albert Vanderpool, Abe Becker, Wilgus Cole, J. H. Bolin, Joe Stamper and Bill Profitt.

Honary pallbearers included Zack Wilson, Lat Lutes, Randa Smyth, Billy Wilson, George Hogan, J. F. Arnold, Sutton Moore, Jess Moore, J. S. Darch, Garfield Thomas, Charlie Jackson, Lewis Taulbee, Jack Brandenburg, Henry Brandenburg, and Russell Reynolds.

Dillard P. Tipton, 81, Beattyville city councilman, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday, April 5, at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, after a short illness.

Tipton had been a councilman eight years.  He formerly was a member of the Lee County Board of Education.  A native of Estill County, Tipton was a retired merchant and farmer and was a member of the Beattyville Christian Church and Irvine Lodge No. 137, F&AM.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Martha Tipton, a son, Arthur T. Tipton, Lookout Heights; two daughters, Mrs. Dorsie Begley, Beattyville, and Mrs. Lillian McLocklin, Richmond; a sister, Mrs. Celia Abney, Ravenna; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Nolan D. Moore and the Rev. Edwin Grigsby.  Burial will be in the family cemetery at Millers Creek.

Elizabeth "Betty" Crowe TIPTON

Millers Creek, March 18 -- Mrs. Bettie Crowe Tipton, 81, was buried at 10 o'clock today in the family graveyard near her home.

She was a daughter of Ira and Leanna Crowe and spent her entire life in the county of her birth, dying on Saturday, March 14, of diseases incident to age.

Early in life she was married to Thomas Tipton, who was struck and killed by a passenger train some 13 years ago.

She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian church, and her grandson, the Rev. Arthur T. Tipton, pastor of Beattyville Christian church, officiated at the funeral services which were held Tuesday afternoon.

She is survived by eight children and was the mother of four which are dead. Forty-eight grand children and 20 great grand children survive her. The surviving daughters are Mrs. Malinda Ann Ware, Millers Creek, and Mrs. D. P. Tipton, Beattyville. The sons are Mackey, Kelley, Joe, Amster, of Millers Creek; Reuben, of Union Hall, and Jesse, of Winchester.

Mary A. Miller TIPTON

Mary Miller Tipton, 24, was the victim of a car accident nine miles north of Cynthiana, Sunday, August 2.  The man, a Negro, who ran into the Tipton car had reportedly been chased by patrolmen out of Cincinnati, Ohio.  He died two hours after to collision.  Mrs. Tipton died in the Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana at 8 o'clock Sunday night.

Her husband, Shelby Tipton, who was driving the car is still unconscious.  James, their younger son, has a broken leg, and Hershel, the older boy, is still unconscious.

Besides her husband and children, she is survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Miller, Zoe, Ky.; and four sisters, Etta Dennis, Zoe; Marcella Alexander, Cincinnati; Glenn Oria, Zoe, and Jewell Dean Miller, Zoe.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Spencer Combs in the Holiness Church of God at Zoe.  Burial was in the family cemetery near Sign Board.  Arrangements were by King Justice Funeral Home.

Mona Marcum TIPTON

Mona Marcum Tipton, age 88, of Beattyville, died Wednesday, December 17, 1997 at Lee County Constant Care.

Born January 3, 1909 she was the daughter of the late Henry Marcum and Josephine Tiller and the widow of Joe Tipton.

Survivors include thre sons, William Charles Tipton, George Tipton, and Rudy Joe Tipton all of Beattyville; three daughters, Dorothy Potts of Beattyville, Geneva Barnes of Irvine, KY and Dovie Lynch of Beattyville; one brother, Roy Marcum of Irvine, KY; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Saturday, December 20, 1997 at 2 p.m. at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with L. C. Moore and Bro. Carl D. Hall.  Burial followed in the Beatty Place Cemetery located on Yellow Rock Road.

Pallbearers were Billy Tipton, Jamie E. Tipton, Terry Tipton, Johnny Tipton, Michael Lynch, Tommy Tipton, Kenny Combs and Ricky Tipton.

Newnam Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Burton Tipton, son of Robert and Anna Tipton, died at the Patty A. Clay hospital on November 11, 1954, within three hours after his birth.

The funeral was held Nov. 12, at 10:00 a.m. at the River View Cemetery.  The service was conducted by Rev. Ed Gayhart.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Anna Tipton, and his sister, Beatrice Tipton, all of Beattyville.

Callie Hensley TIREY

Funeral services for Mrs. Callie Tirey, 72, were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 2, at the King Justice Chapel by Rev. Bill McIntosh.

Mrs. Tirey, the daughter of the late Jack and Rachel Brewer Hensley, was born January 1884 and died at her home at Pebworth, November 30, after several weeks illness.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard Tirey, Pebworth; two daughters, Mrs. Mae Smallwood, Detroit, Mich.; and Mrs. Daisy Richards, Lawrenceburg; one sister, Mrs. Neal Kelly, Owsley County, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Martha Barrett and Mrs. Mary Gabbard, both of Owsley County.

Burial was in the Farler Cemetery with King Justice Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Frances Moore TIREY

Mrs. Frances Tirey, 87, of Booneville, Ky., passed away Monday, November 15, 1993.

Born February 28, 1906, she was the daughter of John Moore and Emily Moore and the wife of Oscar Tirey.  She was a member of the Levi Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar Tirey, Booneville, Ky.; two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Tincher, Beattyville, Ky.; Mrs. Catherine Turner, Dayton, Ohio; one son, Belvie Tirey, Dayton, Ohio; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 17, 1993 at 11:00 a.m. in the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with the Brother Garett Thomas officiating.  Burial will follow in the Tincher Cemetery, Ida May Road, with the Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

James D. Tirey Dies in Texas

Jame D. TIREY, 79, a former resident of Lee County, died Sunday at a VA hospital in Kerrville, Texas, after a short illness.  He was a retired bridge contractor and a veteran of the Spanish American War and a member of the Baptist Church.

Surviving are a brother, Jesse TIREY, Hazard, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Newnam Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert JONES.  Burial was in the Proctor Cemetery.

He was a mechanic, employed by the State Highway Department.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Proctor Church by Rev. Sam Wilson and Rev. E. C. Dalrymple, and burial was in Proctor Cemetery with Masonic rites conducted at the grave by Proctor Lodge No. 213.

Active pallbearers were: Bill Wilson, Montie Williams, Paul Booth, Lester Judd, Delmar Edwards, Homer Brandenburg and Dewey Samples.

Leona Sizemore TIREY

Funeral services for Mrs. Leona Tirey, 80, were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 8, at the First Church of God in Proctor, by Rev. Sam Wilson.

Mrs. Tirey, the daughter of the late Henry and Sarah Sizemore, was born in Clay County, September 24, 1876 and died December 4, at Lebanon, Ohio, after one years illness.

She was a member of the McGuire Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by three sons, Charlie and Walker Tirey, both of Beattyville; Delma Tirey, of Detroit, Mich.; five daughters, Mrs. Wilgus Begley, Beattyville; Mrs. Ora Lee McLain, Mrs. James B. Commbs, Mrs. Gene Voix, all of Middletown, Ohio; and Mrs. Agnes Shanks, Cleves, Ohio.

Burial was in the Proctor Cemetery with Congleton Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Robert TIREY

Robet Tirey, an 83-year-old retired railroad man and long time resident of Proctor, died Tuesday, May 19, in the V.A. Hospital at Louisville.

Mr. Tirey, the son of the late Oliver and Martha Porter Tirey, was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and a member of the Christian Church.  His death occurred after an illness of only a few days.

Mr. Tirey is survived by two daughters, Nellie Tirey of Beattyville and Mrs. Bertha Eyer of Dayton, Ohio; and two brothers, Jess Tirey of Hazard and Jim Tirey of Texas.

Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. for Mr. Tirey in the Congleton Bros. Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ike Gabbard and Rev. Everett Ross in charge.  Burial will be in the Proctor Cemetery with arrangements by Congleton Bros. Funeral Home.

Edward TODD

Funeral services were held Sunday for Ed Todd, 32, who was found dead early Saturday morning on the river bank just across the river from Heidelberg.

According to county judge Cecil Kincaid who went to the scene after he had been notified of the discovery of the body, it appeared that Todd had fallen over a 75-foot embankment and had died from exposure.

Judge Kincaid said that Todd was last seen near the south end of the Heidelberg bridge late Friday afternoon by a night-watchman guarding some coal mining property.  He was found just below the end of the bridge early Saturday morning.  No inquest was held, the judge said.

Todd was the son of Martha and the late Budd Todd of Heidelberg and other than his mother, he is survived by three brothers and four sisters.

The brothers are Bill, Jack, and George Todd but the names of the sisters were unavailable.

Funeral services were held at the Brandenburg Cemetery where the body was interred, with Rev. George Botner in charge.  Congleton Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of burial arrangements.

Edward Todd, 31, formerly of Dayton, died Saturday at Heidelberg, Ky.  He had resided in Dayton for about five years and had moved to Heidelberg recently.  He worked for the W. H. Kiefaber Co. here.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Martha Todd of Heidelberg; a daughter, Shirley; a son, James; four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Seltman, Mrs. Helen West and Mrs. Mary Starin of Dayton and Mrs. Louise Everhart of Trotwood, and three brothers, Jack, William and George of Heidelberg.

Services and burial will be Sunday in Heidelberg.

Benjamin Toler, a retired farmer, died of cancer yesterday at his farm, R.R. 1, Cozaddale, Ohio.  He was 77 years old.

Mr. Toler had farmed in the Cozaddale area for 20 years, retiring three years ago because of ill health.  He formerly farmed near his native Beattyville, Ky.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Madge Milican, Hyde Park, and Mrs. Emma Fraley, Houston, Tex.; three sons, Ova, Hyde Park; Clayton, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Dale, Hyde Park; a step-daughter, Mrs. Edgar Dale, Cozaddale; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderson-Schraffenberger funeral home, Corryville.  Burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery, Milford.

Harrison Curtis Toler, 89, of Gratis, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dayton.

Born March 14, 1912, in Beattyville, Ky., he was the son of Logan and Vena (Miller) Toler. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and had retired from Middletown Sand and Gravel after 20 years. Mr. Toler was a member of VFW Post #3009 in Middletown, Fraternal Order of Eagles #528, American Legion Post #218 and Disabled American Veterans of Middletown.

Survivors include his wife of seven years, Virginia; six sons, Richard Toler of St. Louis, Mo., Larry Toler of Tucson, Ariz., Kenneth Toler of California, Jim Toler of Wilmington, Sam Toler of Camden and Steve Toler of Clarksville, Ohio; one daughter, Robin Mullins of Trenton.

Also surviving are five stepsons, Miles Back of Cincinnati, Everett Back, David Back and Gary Back, all of Middletown, and Jeff Back of Yulee, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Vicki Taylor of Dayton, Virginia Vest of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Kim Kindred of Middletown; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lilian Purdue of Dayton and Gail Lawson of Middletown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Everett Toler; two sisters, Versi Warmouth and Minnie Day; and one son, Ova Toler.

Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 7, at Gratis United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Everett Back officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Gratis. Lindloff-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Gratis, was in charge of arrangements.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Milford Church of God, with burial in Milford Cemetery.  The Schraffenberger-Anderson funeral home is in charge.

Mrs. Toler is well known in Beattyville where she formerly operated a restaurant.

Survivors are two brothers, Henry Barrett, Beattyville, and Joe Barrett, Muncie, Ind., and two sisters, Mrs. Martha Brandenburg and Miss Josie Barrett, Beattyville.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Blaines Branch Church of God by the Rev. Forest Drake.  Burial will be in the Brandenburg Cemetery.  The body is at the Newnam Funeral Home.

Richard Madison "Matt" TOLER

Matt Toler died at his home near St. Helens Saturday, January 30, 1937, of infirmities due to age.

He was born in Perry county 73 years ago and came to this county in early boyhood, his father having been killed during the Civil War**.

He is survived by his widow, one brother, Elijah Toler, of Athol, one sister, Mrs. Deliah Charles, of St. Helens, and three foster children, and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services were conducted Monday by the Beattyivlle Council No. 7, Jr. O. U. A. M. of which he was a member for many years, assisted by Rev. Luther Newnam.  Burial was in the Brandenburg graveyard.

Richmond, Ky., May 20 - - Mrs. Rosie Toler, 60, of Sand Gap, died at 4 a.m. today at the St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.  She was the widow of Mart Toler.

Survivors include five sons, Fred Toler, Lexington; James, Seldon and Robert Lee Toler, all of Sand Gap, and Hubert Toler, Rockcastle County; 32 grandchildren and several brothers and sisters.

The body is at the Oldham, Roberts and Powell Funeral Home.

Ambrose Durbin "Durb" TOWNSEND

Ambrose Durb Townsend, 79, of Owingsville, Ky., died Friday, December 12 at the Clark County Hospital after a short illness.

He was a native of Lee County and a World War I veteran.  He was the son of the late Ambrose Townsend and Sally Belle Mays Townsend..

He is survived by one brother, Jesse Townsend of Mt. Vernon, Ky. and several nieces and nephews.

Services were at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 15 at the Lewis Funeral Home at Irvine with Rev. Glenn Riddell officiating.  Burial was in the Horn Cemetery at Old Landing.  Nephews served as pallbearers.

George Henry TOWNSEND

Funeral services for George Henry Townsend were held Saturday February 17, 1951 at 2:00 p.m. at the Eager Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Brown.

Mr. Townsend the son of the late James Henry and Pauline Kelly Townsend was born at Crystal, Ky. on April 14, 1879 and deceased this life at the home of his sister near Beattyville on February 16, 1951 at the age of 71 years 10 months and 2 days.

He spent his life in Lee county and the most of the time near Crystal.

He leaves to survive him two sisters, Mrs. Jossie Mays of Beattyville, Ky. and Mrs. Lily Gay Beer of Rothwell, Menifee county, Kentucky; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Eager Cemetery near Crystal with Congleton Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Lewis TOWNSEND

Sandfield, June 27 - Lewis Townsend,  29, was found dead about 8:30 o'clock this morning.  He was in the nearly dry bed of Little Sinking creek with his face in a pool of water about six inches deep when found by G. N. Patrick, gauger for an oil company.  The body was near the bridge across the creek here.  The pool contained about five gallons of water.

The deceased was a brother of Johnnie and Jesse Townsend and had left the home of Johnnie about an hour before his body was found.  Coroner R. B. Riley was called and an inquest was held, the verdict being "accidental drowning."

It seemed that Townsend had fallen and was unable to get up.  He had been in a Lexington hospital until a few months ago.

Vina Stamper TOWNSEND

Irvine, Ky., Feb. 17 - The body of Mrs. Vina Townsend, who had been missing from home for four weeks, was found floating in the Kentucky River five miles from here today by two boys who notified Estill county officials. The body was brought to Irvine, where three physicians said she had died from a blow on the head.

Mrs. Townsend's husband, Durb Townsend, who has served 10 days of a sentence on an adultry charge, was charged with the murder.  The warrant was served on him in the Estill county jail.  County officials said Mrs. Townsend had complained to them last summer that her husband had tried to bury her alive.

Miss Lizzie Townsend, Durb's sister, and Miss Alpha Barrett, who lived at Townsend's home, were arrested and charge with accessory to murder.

Another resident of the Townsend home, Miss Daisy Horn, disappeared about two years ago and never was found.  County officials at the time suspected she had met with foul play but could not find evidence to support charges.

Irvine, Ky., Feb. 18 - While the body of Mrs. Vina Townsend, 32,  was being buried on the county  poor farm near here Wednesday morning the Estill county grand jury returned a joint indictment charging Durb Townsend, her husband, Lizzie Townsend, a sister-in-law, and Alpha Barrett with murder.

Mrs. Townsend's body was found in the Kentucky River, two women are being held for alleged connection with her death.

Arch N. Treadway, 81, of Jackson, died at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday at the Good Samaritan hospital.  The body was taken today to Beattyville, where funeral services and burial will be held, attendants at the W. R. Milward mortuary reported.

Mr. Treadway, a son of the late Elisha and Elizabeth Eager Treadway, was born in Booneville, KY.  He was admitted to the hospital for treatment Aug. 5.

Born July 8, 1898 in Lee County he was the widower of Martha Vanderpool who died in 1971 and the son of Louisa Gumm and an employee of Powell Valves.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Fox, Cincinnati, Ohio; two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

Decatur B. Treadway, aged 49 years, a clerk in the War Department, was found dead in the bathroom of his home at 506 B. Street southeast about 10:30 o'clock last night.  Gas was flowing from an open jet.

Mrs. Treadway, who had been to her mother's house, returned home about 10 o'clock and was attracted by the odor of gas.  She started at the cellar and went through all the rooms until she came to the bathroom on the second floor.  Pushing open the door she saw her husband sitting in a chair, his head buried on his chest.  The gas jet was only partially turned on.

Mr. and Mrs. Treadway took a walk in the afternoon, and Mrs. Treadway went to visit her mother.  The husband said he would return home.  They parted in excellent spirits, and Mrs. Treadway says her husband had never talked of suicide to her.

When Mrs. Treadway found her husband she called in Dr. L. D. Wilson, of 316 B. street southeast, who pronounced the man dead.

Mr. Treadway had been employed at the War Department for a number of years.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter.

John Arthur Logan TREADWAY

John A. Treadway, 66, of 909 Scott street, Covington, died Monday morning of a heart attack in a Lake Geneva O., hospital.

Mr. Treadway was hospitalized two weeks ago after suffering a heart attack while driving on I-90 in northern Ohio where he was vacationing.

He was a retired machinist for Schafer Manufacturing Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice; a daughter, Mrs. Oliveen Kincaid, Dayton, O.; a sister, Mrs. Ora Olinger, Covington, and three brothers, Joseph, Middletown, O., and Augustus and Clark Treadway, both of Ravenna.

Services will be a 10 a.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Mrs. Martha Treadway, 68, wife of Clark Treadway, Cincinnati died Wednesday, April 28 in Bethesda Hospital, Cincinnati.  She was a native of Lee County and a member of the Church of God.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by da daughter, Mr. Ruby Fox, Cincinnati; three sisters, Mrs. Cordelia Ball, Cincinnati; Mrs. Velva Lyons, Pontiac, Michigan; and Mrs. Mae Bugsby, Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, Herbert Vanderpool, Middletown, Ohio; and Alex Vanderpool, Cincinnati; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Kenneth Adams.  Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Nettie Treadway Dies In Middletown

Mrs. John D. Treadway, 67, died in the Middletown hospital Tuesday, Dec. 19, after an illness of two months.

Mrs. Treadway, the daughter of the late Hampton and Nancy Brandenburg Flanery, was born in Lee county February 6, 1883.

She is survived by her husband, four daughters, Mrs. Geo. Henderson, of Waynesville, O., Mrs. Wade Turner, Mrs. Frank Larkin, and Miss Anna Gay Treadway, all of Middletown; and two sons, Wallace and Russell Treadway, also of Middletown.  She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Martha Graves, of Hazard.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, following the arrival of the body on train No. 3, in the McGuire Memorial Presbyterian church.  Time of service has been set at two o'clock.  Burial will follow in the Flanery burial ground near Pebworth with Congleton Brothers funeral home in charge.

Funeral servcies were held on Thursday at Vincent, Kentucky with burial at the Treadway family cemetery there.

Robert R. Treadway, 77, a former resident of Lee and Owsley counties, died Saturday, May 17, at Kennedy Veterans Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.  Mr. Treadway was a resident of Paducah.

A veteran of the Spanish-American War, Mr. Treadway was past commander of the Unites Spanish Veterans Camp.  He was a member of the Kentucky Legislature in 1915-16, and was responsible for a laborer pay bill which attracted wide-spread attention at that time which enabled laborers to receive their pay twice a month.  Mr. Treadway also served as an officer of Federal prisons and was retired from duty at the Narcotics Prison at Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1939, at which time he moved to Paducah.  He was a member of the Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge.

He was widely known for his swimming ability and had, on several occasions, swum the Ohio River, the last time being when he was 75.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Sarah E. Treadway; two daughters, Miss Katherine Treadway of Taipei, Formosa, and Mrs. J. W. Gabriel of St. Louis; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Porter of Beattyville, Mrs. W. S. Mitchell of Rayville, La., and Mrs. S. J. Peel of Benton, Ky., and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 20 at the Harris Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Bedford Turner officiating.  He was assisted by Rev. Athel Shepherd.  Burial was in the Maplelawn Cemetery.

Attending the funeral from Lee and Owsley were his sister, Mrs. Porter, a nephew, Jim Treadway of Travellers Rest, and a niece, Mrs. Marie McClure of Booneville.

Winn, here after a long illness.

She was a member of the Christian Church and for many years ran a millinery store here.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. (CST) Saturday
at the King Justice Funeral Home here by the Rev. J. H. Burton. Burial will be in the Combs Cemetery at Milltown. The body is at the funeral home.

William Martin TREADWAY

Martin Treadway, 44, was buried at Fincastle Saturday in the old Kincaid graveyard.  Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Wm. Roundtree, Typo, and Rev. Charley Kincaid, Zoe.  Members of the Junior Order conducted their burial rites following the other service.

Mr. Treadway died of tuberculosis July 2, at his home at Typo following an illness of two years.  He was a native of Lee county, a son of George and Louisa Treadway.  For the past 15 years he had been in the employ of the L. & N. railroad company, moving from his farm near Airdale to Typo some five years ago.

He is survived by his widow, his mother, five children, two sisters and five brothers.

Undertakers in charge were Congleton Brothers.

Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery with B. F. Porter Funeral Home at Campton, in charge of arrangements.

Ada Slone Oliver TURNER

Ada Oliver TURNER, 87 widow of John B. OLIVER of Beattyville, Ky d. April 17, 2001 at the KY River Medical Center in Jackson, KY.  She was born Sept. 6, 1913 in Lee County, Ky the d/o the late Ben and Mary Ann CRABTREE SLONE.

Survivors are two step daughters, Helen TAYLOR of Fairborn, OH; Reba TIREY of Louisville, KY; two sisters, Louise BRANDENBURG and Ila TYLER both of Beattyville, KY; 11 nieces and nephews.

Burial in the Ashcraft Cemetery.

Andrew J. TURNER

Andrew J. Turner, son of Pleasant and Lucinda Turner was born at Turin, Ky., in Owsley County, October 12, 1869, and departed this life Dec. 24, 1935, at the age of 66 years, two months, and 12 days.  He made his home there until 15 years ago at which time he moved with his family to Richmond, Indiana.

He was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Norton, in the year 1889 to which union were born 10 children.  An infant, the first child, preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn, his wife, Lucy Turner, six sons, John of Witt, Ky., Vernon, Clyde, Charles, Luther, and Tracy all of Richmond, Ind., and three daughters, Mrs. Mae McFadden of New Paris, Ohio; mrs. Nannie Seery, and Mrs. Dorothy Montgomery of Richmond, Ind., 11 grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Nannie Powell, Louisville, and Mrs. Laura Moore of Clarksdale, Mo., two brothers, C. B. Turner, Turin, Ky., and Henry Turner, Levi, Ky., and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the home of his brother, C. B. Turner, Friday afternoon, Dec. 27, by Rev. E. B. Rose, after which his body was laid to rest in the family burying ground of his old home.

Mrs. Anna Lee Turner, age 64 of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Friday, January 14, 1983 at 8 p.m.

Born December 16, 1918 she was the widow of Clayton Turner and the daughter of Floyd Brandenburg and Ollie Smith.

Survived by two sons, J.C. Turner, North Bend, Ohio; Donald Turner, Cincinnati, Ohio; three daugthers, Wanda Lee Gentry, Cincinnati, Ohio; Geraldine Sandman, Okeana, Ohio; Carol Louise, Cincinnati, Ohio; five brothers, Clinton, Lonnie C., Mearl, Marcus and Thomas G. Brandenburg all of Beattyvillev; four sisters, Mary Jane Brandenburg, Irvine; Zula Mae Newman, Covington; Christine Ross, Beattyville; Earline Clark, Norwood, Ohio; grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 18, 1983 at 3 p.m. at the Newnam Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry States officiating.  Burial followed in the Perry-Begley Cemetery at Delvinta.  The Newnam Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Arch TURNER

Arch Turner, 39, of Levi, was killed about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 21 when his pick up truck collided with an empty truck a mile north of Booneville on the Beattyville Road during a heavy rainstorm.

Mrs. Ruth Taylor, Owsley county sheriff said Turner died instantly of a broken neck and other injuries.

She identified the other driver as Bud Stamper.

The sheriff said Turner, his truck loaded with corn, rounded a curve and met the coal truck.  Stamper said he slammed on his brakes in an attempt to avoid the accident.  The sheriff said the coal truck skidded into the smaller truck.

Stamper was returning from Beattyville where he had delivered a load of coal to a barge line.  The coal had been mined at Buckhorn.  Neither of the trucks overturned.

Funeral services for Mr. Turner were held at the Clifty Methodist Church at Scoville, September 23 at 2 p.m. by Rev. Skasick, Rev. E. F. Burnside and Rev. Everett Ross.

Mr. Turner, the son of the late James [sic} Turner and Mrs. Lou Turner was born in Owsley county, October 8, 1916 and died September 21.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Lou Turner, three brothers, Chester Turner of Travellers Rest, Shade Turner of Norwood, Ohio and Sherman Turner of Levi.

Burial was in the Combs Cemetery at Scoville under the direction of King Justice Funeral Home.

NOTE:  Arch was the son of Jesse & Lou Spivey Turner.  He also was survived by a sister, Lucy J. Bowman, wife of Henry W. Bowman.

Clayton TURNER

Clayton Turner, 54, died at St. Mary's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Sunday, August 9.

He was the son of the late Sherman and Sarah Turner of Owsley County and a brother of Mrs. William Peters of Route 5, London.

He leaves his wife, Ann; three daughters: Wanda Lee, Duralene and Carol; and two sons, J. C. and Donnie Gene, all of Cincinnati; two brothers, Willard and Horton Turner, Rushville, Ind.; five sisters: Mrs. Letcher Charles, Beattyville, Ky.; Mrs. William Peters, London; Mrs. Finley Ambrose, Norwood, Ohio; Mrs. Lushion Estes, Rushville, Ind.; and Mrs. Herman Dunigan, Glenwood, Ind.

The body was removed to the Newnam Funeral Home in Beattyville and burial was in the Perry Begley Cemetery at Delvinta, Ky.  Funeral services were conducted at the graveside August 12.

Erice Mae Brandenburg TURNER

Lower Buffalo, Oct. 11 -- Funeral services were held today at 2 o'clock for Mrs. Ersie Brandenburg Turner, 28, wife of Charlie Turner, who died Wednesday.

She was the daughter of James S. and Amanda Judd Brandenburg, and was married to Charles Turner February 22, 1924.

The burial services were conducted by the Rev. Z. Ball and the Rev. Luther Newnam at the old Brandenburg graveyard here.

She is survived by her husband, a daughter and two sons: Mildred, Russell and Bert Carroll.  Her father and one sister survive her.

John Turner, County Minister Died Thursday

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 31, at 3:30 p.m. for Rev. John Turner, at the Booneville Presbyterian Church.  The ministers were Rev. McClure, Rev. Burton, Rev. Isadore Childers, and Rev. Ike Gabbard.

Rev. Turner is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lola Turner;  three daughters:  Mrs. Viola Williamson, Booneville;  Mrs. Minnie Drews, Louisville, and Mrs. Elsie Lynn Kuhlenbeck, Louisville;  one son:  James Robert Turner, of Knoxville, Tenn.;  three sisters:  Mrs. Mattie Wilson, Eversole, Ky., Miss Effie Turner, Irvine, Mrs. Grace Congleton, Irvine, Ky.;  three brothers:  Oscar Turner, Brooksville, Ind., Lloyd Turner, Laurel, Ind., Arch Turner, Moores Hill, Ind.;  and four grandchildren.

Rev. Turner had been a member of a Presbyterian church for 45 years.  He was a Presbyrtian minister for 20 years and a school teacher for 23 years.  He died suddenly of a heart attack at his home on July 29.

Internment was in Combs cemetery at Pebworth.  The funeral was in charge of King Justice Funeral Home.

Nannie Tirey TURNER

Mrs. Nannie Tirey Turner, 64, wife of Richard Turner, died of influenza at her home at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon of last week.

Funeral service, conducted by the Rev. Robert Spicer, was held Friday and burial was in the graveyard near the home.

Mrs. Turner was a daughter of Oliver and Martha Porter Tirey and was born in Lee county.

She is survived by her husband, two sons and a daughter; Charley Turner, Bea Turner, and Mrs. Nell Moore.  Vilas Turner, Mrs. Anse Rowlan, Mrs. Clayton Congleton, Mrs. Tom Smith, and Wm. Turner are step children.  She is also survived by Harvey Tirey, a half brother, and four brothers, Bob Tirey and J. C. Tirey, Proctor; Jesse Tirey, Hazard; and James Tirey who has not been heard of for several years but was in St. Louis from last account.

Richard L. TURNER

Funeral services for Richard Lee Turner, 91, were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 8th, at the Beattyville Christian Church by Rev. Sam Wilson.

Mr. Turner, the son of the late Abner Turner, was born in Clay County, March 12, 1865 and died December 7, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Anderson Rowland.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the Pine Grove Christian Church.

He is also survived by four sons, Vilas and Wm. Turner, of Beattyville; Enoch Turner, of Mason, and Charlie Turner, of Cleveland, Ohio; three other daughters, Mrs. Clayton Congleton, Winchester, Ind.; Mrs. Nora Smith, Beattyville; Mrs. Nell Seale, Austin, Ind.; 42 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Turner Cemetery with Congleton Brothers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Sam TURNER

Sam Turner, 67, retired railroader, died July 6, at Mt. Mary Hospital in Hazard.  He died after a one-day illness.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Imogene Turner; six sons, Eugene Turner, Typo; James, Olaf and Offit Turner, Cincinnati; Willie Turner, Austin, Ind.; John Turner, War Creek; seven daughters, Mrs. Grace Smith, Mrs. Gladys Bailey, Mrs. Gene Hensley, Nannie Turner, all of Cincinnati; May Gross, Wide Creek; Frankie Lou Turner and Pauline Turner, Typo; and 40 grandchildren.

Funeral services were July 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Spicer Cemetery at Oakdale.  Rev. F. M. Deaton was the minister.  Interment was in the Spicer cemetery.  Maggard and Garrett Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Turner was a retired farmer and a member of the Baptist Church for the past 50 years.

Leslie TWYMAN

Beattyville, August 5 - Leslie Twyman, 59 years old, died at his home Friday as a result of cancer of the throat.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the Christian Church, being conducted by the Rev. Luther Newnam, pastor, assisted by Rev. Arthur T. Tipton, associate pastor.  Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery.

Mr. Twyman was a son of Broaddus Wyckliff Twyman and Lucy Gayle Twyman, and was born in Beattyville.  At about the age of 17 he began the work of a railroad man and for about 40 years worked in different departments of the railroad system.  His last service was as a painter.  His railroad work was interrupted during the Spanish-American war as he served the United States until peace  was declarred in 1898.

On July 20, 1903, he was married to Miss Lula Lockhart, who together with their two children, survive him.

He was a member of the Beattyville Christian Church having served as an Elder for some 12 years.  He was a member of Beattyville Council No. 7, Jr.O.U.A.M., and has held the hughest office within that body.  He was also a veteran of Beattyville Camp No. 17, United Spanish-War Veterans.

He is survived by his widow; his mother, Mrs. Lucy Twyman, his son, Herbert, his daughter, Helen, a granddaughter, Peggy Joe, all of Beattyville; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Tarvin, Mrs. Tiny Cote, Beattyville, Mrs. M.G. Taylor, Winchester, and one brother, B.W. Twyman, Milwaukee, Wis.

Lucy Gayle TWYMAN

Mrs. Lucy Ann Twyman, 87, died at her home in Beattyville Monday evening at 7 o'clock, of diseases incident to age.

Funeral services were conducted from the Christian church by the Rev. Luther Newnam and Rev. Frederick J. Drew, at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.  Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Twyman was born in Frankfort, a daughter of Joseph C. and Elizabeth Coyelle Gayle, October 4, 1849.  She was married to B. W. Twyman July 2, 1868.  In 1874 she became a member of the Beattyville Christian Church and at the time of her death was the oldest member of that church.

Surviving her are three daugthers and one son: Mrs. M. G. Taylor, Winchester; Mrs. Tiny Cote, and Mrs. Ruth Tarvin, Beattyville; and B. W. Twyman, Milwaukee, Wis.  She is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Claude TYE

Funeral services were held on August 1, at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Oak Baptist Church for Claude Tye, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. B. F. Tye.  The message was delivered by Rev. Kilburn.

Mr. Tye died July 29, 1954 at the Gibson Hospital in Richmond, Ky., after a weeks illness of pneumonhia.  He was 42 years old.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Amanda Tye, Sturgeon; five sisters, Mrs. Minnie Brewer, of Sturgeon; Mrs. Opal Brewer of Sturgeon; Mrs. Georgia Spurlock, Dayton; Mrs. Pearl Marcum, of Dayton; Mrs. Christine Marcum, Hazard; three brothers: Speed Tye, Portsmouth, Ohio; John B. Tye, Travellers Rest; Jack Tye, U.S.N.

Interment was in the Brandenburg cemetery.  The arrangements were by King Justice Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the Royal Oak Baptist Church for Jack W. Tye, who was killed Sunday, June 26, when the tractor he was driving ran over a bank and overturned near Scoville.  Rev. Kilburn officiated.

Jack, the son of Mrs. Amanda Tye and the late Dr. B. F. Tye was born in Owsley County January 2, 1930.

Besides his mother he is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Lewis Brewer of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Randolph Brewer of Sturgeon, Mrs. Lloyd Spurlock and Mrs. Pearl Marcum both of Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Christine Marcum of Hazard; two brothers, Steed Tye of Ohio and John Ben Tye of Travelers Rest.

Burial was in the Brandenburg cemetery near Booneville, with King Justice Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Minerva Henderson TYREE

Rice Station, Feb. 5 -- Mrs. Minerva Henderson Tyree, 80, was buried here today funeral services being conducted by the Rev. J. T. Turpin at the grave.  A short service was conducted by a minister of the Christian church at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. McKinney, Berea, where she died Sunday night of a heart attack.

She had been a life long member of the Baptist church.

She is survived by three sons, Co. C. E. Tyree, Beattyville; Ross Tyree, Indianapolis, Ind.; Walter Tyree, Camden, Ohio.  Four daughters also survive her: Mrs. Chas. Abney, Fremont, Ohio; Mrs. J. F. McKinney, Berea; Mrs. William Malloy, Indianapolis, Ind.; and Mrs. Bertha Abney, Willow Tree.  There also are 42 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren surviving her.

Mrs. Tyree was a member of the pioneer Henderson family settling at Boonesboro.  He husband, Charles m. Tyree, died in 1922.

Ralph TYREE

Irvine, Nov. 26 -- Funeral services for Ralph Tyree, 37, who died suddenly Friday night were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the West Irvine Baptist church, and burial was in the West Irvine cemetery.

Mr. Tyree was superintendent of the Estill county schools for four years.  He left that office last spring and entered the garage business.  He attended Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College and held a degree from the University of Kentucky.

He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Tyree, Rice Station, and one sister, Miss Beatrice Tyree.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. T. Turpin.

Viola Jackson TYREE

Viola Tyree, Greenwood

Viola Jackson Tyree, 91, of Eden Gardens, died March 19, 2001, at Self Memorial Hospital.

Born in Beattyville, Ky., she was a daughter of the late Robert B. and Lillie Sizemore Jackson. She was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, Ky., and formerly taught in public schools in Beattyville and Big Rapids, Mich.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne T. Van Bramer of Greenwood; and a brother, Robert B. Jackson of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Beattyville, Ky.

Visitation: 6 to 7 p.m. tonight at Blyth Funeral Home. Memorials: Charity of one's choice.
