Gene WILSON

The Beattyville Enterprise
Thursday, 6 October 1955

A former Owsley County man was injured fatally and his wife suffered injuries when their automobile was struck by a freight train Sunday, Sept. 25, near Walton.  Gene Wilson, 601 Garrard Street, Covington, died at St. Elizabeth Hospital an hour after the accident.  His wife, Lucille, escaped with cuts and bruises.  She was treated and released.

Kentucky State Police said the automobile apparently stalled on a railroad crossing between U.S. 25 and the old Lexington Pike, a mile north of Walton.  They said the train, enroute to Danville from Cincinnati, tore the automobile in half.

Dewey Stuart, engineer, told police he saw the car, but could not stop in time to avoid the crash.

Mr. Wilson suffered a skull fracture.  His wife was treated for a bruise on her right ankle and shock.

The couple, who had no children, were on their way to visit Mr. Wilson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilson, Route 2, Walton.  They were only a short distance from their destination when the tragedy occurred.

Mr. Wilson was a lithographer for the Heekin Can Co., Cincinnati.  He was a native of Owsley county, and served with the Army in Germany in 1951-52.  His wife is employed by the Crane and Breed Casket Co., Cincinnati.

Besides his widow and parents, Mr. Wilson is survived by five sisters, Mrs. June Brewster of Walton, Mrs. Cleda Allen of Berea, Mrs. Ann Liptak of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Lucy Roberts and Miss Sophie Wilson, both of South Fort Mitchell.

Green Berry WILSON

Owsley County Courier (Booneville, KY)
Friday, 5 October 1934

Booneville, Oct. 3 - Funeral services for former Sheriff Green Wilson, 63 years old, will be held at 1 o'clock today in the yard of the Hupert Wilson home.  Burial will be in the Shepherd graveyard.  The Rev. J.B. Jones, and Rev. A.C. Wildman, will conduct the religious rites.

The body of Mr. Wilson was found in the river several hundred yards below the bridge Tuesday morning following an all night search.  Mr. Wilson's hat and saddle bags were found on the bridge about 7:30 Monday night and the horse he had been riding was in the school grounds near the scene of the accident.

Marks on the floor of the bridge showed where a horse had shied at something near the spot where the saddle bags and hat were found.  A bruise on the right side of the body near the hip, one on the head and one on the right leg were the only marks found.  The Coroner's jury reconstructed the scene as follows:  Mr. Wilson was returning to town from his farm on Meadow creek about seven o'clock.  While crossing the bridge some shots were fired which caused the horse to jump and Mr. Wilson thrown, striking the railing of the bridge and being over-balanced plunged into the river.  He was probably unconscious when he struck the water.  It is known that the horse would shy and jump at the sound of a shot.  The verdict was "Accidental drowning by being thrown from a horse on the bridge."

Mr. Wilson is survived by his widow, Mrs. Belle Moore Wilson, three daughters, Mrs. Herbert Seale, Mrs. Luther Peters, and Mrs. Gene Gabbard, all of Booneville, two sons, Clyde Wilson, Booneville and F.B. Wilson, London.  He is also survived by a brother, Hubert Wilson, Berea, and a sister, Mrs. Laura Minter, Richmond.

Mr. Wilson closed last year a successful term as Sheriff of Owsley county.  He was a prosperous farmer and an influential citizen, a man who will be missed by his community and county.

Funeral arrangements were by Congleton Brothers, and Garrett, Beattyville.

Witt's Body Found Saturday

Beattyville, Nov. 30- The body of Asbury Witt, 56, was found floating in the North Fork of the Kentucky River here Saturday morning by Mart Toler of Beattyville. Toler discovered the body about one hundred yards from the spot where Jack Little said he saw Witt struggling in the water on November 1.

Witt left his home in Beattyville on October 31 to go to the residence of John W. Snowden, about three miles away, and never returned. Officers and volunteers dragged the river in unsuccessful attempts to recover the body. Shortly before the discovery of the body, a professional diver from Cincinnati searched the bottom of the river but was unable to locate the body.

An inquest was held Saturday afternoon by Coroner Robin Riley at which time the jury declared that Asbury had met his death by drowning. The verdict was rendered by the Coroner's jury following an examination of the body to determine whether or not he had been murdered and then placed in the river. The discovery of a cap bearing what appeared to be blood stains and identified as the one worn by the missing person when he left home, had led officers to believe that foul play had been committed.

Funeral services were conducted at the grave in the Proctor Cemetery at 11 o'clock Sunday morning by Rev. Leslie Smith. Congleton Bros., of Beattyville had charge of the arrangements.

Survivers include his widow, Mrs. Lucinda Witt, Beattyville, one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Willis, Newport, and one step daughter, Mrs. Oral Oaks, Beattyville.
