Sketch of Andrew Combs Home
(Drawn & submitted by Vivian Moon)
|This is a drawing of the Combs house in Lee Co. Ky. as I remember it.
It had a tin roof and tin siding with a pressed brick design. If
we had a big rain storm it would get so loud that you couldn't sleep at
night. The limestone rocks used for the foundation came from Miller's
creek and the huge chestnut logs used at the foundation were cut from the
farm. All the other lumber used to build the house came from our land and
was cut at my grandfather, Andrew Combs', saw mill. This was
called the "New Combs House". The old log house was located to the front
of this house. The log house was built in two parts under the same roof,
with like a breezeway between. In the winter they if it got really
cold they would bring the animals into this open area to protect and keep
Later the old log house was dismantled and taken up on the hill and
used as a barn. As a young child I walked the log foundation that remained
Not far from this house Andrew Combs owned and operated a small general store also. To the left side of this picture and high upon a hill was a really old cemetery...I remember that some of the stones were from the time of the Civil War..I wonder if I could ever find it again. On the other side of the hill was the old Barrett Cemetery. On the farm we had a big cave but it had a small opening and it was in this cave that Uncle Marvin Combs, eldest son of Andrew Combs, made his famous moonshine..
