Epitaths

While transcribing the old cemeteries in Todd County we have come across what we think are very interesting, sometimes even amusing epitaphs.  We thought it would be nice to highlight some of these on a page of their own.  If you find others that you think deserve some special attention, please let us know.

A bud from earth bloomed in heaven. A beautiful life came to an end,
She died as she lived-Everyone's friend.
A good wife, affectionate mother and true friend.
A light from our household is gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our hearts
That never can be filled.
A little flower of love,
That blossomed, but to die
Transplanted now above,
To bloom with God on high.
A little time on earth he spent
Till God for him His angels sent
And then on time he closed his eyes
To wake in glory in the skies.
A loved one is gone from our circle,
On earth we will meet her no more
She has gone to her home in heaven
And all her afflictions are o'er.
AFFLICTION FOR LONG TIME I HAVE
PHYSICIANS SKILL IN VAIN
TILL CHRIST WAS PLEASED TO GIVE ME LAST
AND RID ME OF MY PAIN
As a wife-devoted,
As a mother-affectionate,
As a friend-our trust and love,
In life-she exhibited all the graces of a Christian,
In death-her redeemed spirit returned to God who gave it.
As a wife, she had no equal
As a mother, she had no superior.
Asleep in Jesus
Beautiful, lovely, she was but given
A fair, but to earth, to bloom in Heaven.
Behold He taketh away
Who can hinder Him,
Who shall say unto Him
What doest thou.
Beloved by all, but most by those who knew her best.
Rest lovely one in the arms of Jesus
Death no more shall thy peaceful breast invade
Rest till that morn when thou shall come to meet us
All in a robe of righteousness arrayed.
Beloved how we miss you.
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord
That they may rest from their labours
And their works do follow them.
Budded on earth to bloom in Heaven.
Closed are the sweetest eyes
from this world of pain,
But trust in God to meet again
DEAREST FATHER THOU HAST LEFT US
HERE THY LOSS WE DEEPLY FEEL
BUT TIS GOD THAT HATH BEREFT US
HE CAN ALL OUR SORROWS HEAL
Death is eternal life, thy shouldn't weep. Died on the field of battle
Twas noble thus to die
God smiles on valiant soldiers
His record is on high
Dying is but going home. Earth has one mortal less
Heaven an angel more
Ere sin could blight or sorrow fade
Death came with friendly care
The opening bud to Heaven conveyed
And bade it blossom there.
FAITHFUL WIFE AND MOTHER DEAR
IN SWEET REPOSE IS SLEEPING HERE
HER PAINFUL LOSS WE DEEPLY FEEL
BUT GOD CAN ALL HER SORROWS HEAL
Farewell my wife and children all
From you a father Christ doth call
Mourn not for me, it is vain
To call me to your sight again.
Father!  Let thy Grace be Giving
That we may meet in Heaven
God gave-He took-He will restore.
He doeth all things well
God's finger touched him and he slept.
Gone But Not Forgotten Gone to be with Jesus
He is at rest in Heaven  He still lingers in our memory
He was beloved by God and man. Heaven is the home where spirits dwell
Who wandered here a while
And seeing things invisible,
Departed with a smile.
HERE LIES ONE WHO IN HIS LIFE WAS A
KIND FATHER AND A TRUE HUSBAND
His toils are past, his work is done
He fought the fight-the victory won.
Living he made the poor man's heart be glad
And at his death the sorrowing ones more sad.
How soon fades the tender flower I am not afraid of tomorrow
For I have seen yesterday and I love today.
I'm glad my living was in God's plan. In God we trust and die we must
In Heaven there is one angel more  In Loving Memory
IT WAS AN ANGEL THAT VISITED
THE GREEN EARTH AND TOOK THE FLOWERS
It was an angel that visited
The green earth and took my wife away
Jesus loves the pure and holy Jesus tender Shepherd hear me
Bless a little child to-night
Through the darkness be there near me
While my sleep till morning light
I'll this day thy hand hath led me,
I thank thou for thy care
Thou hast warmed me, clothed me, led me.
Listen to my evening prayer.
Just in the morning of the day
In youth and love, he died.
May we be a reunited family in heaven.
Meet me in Heaven MOTHER THOU HAS FROM US FLOWN
TO THE REGIONS FAR ABOVE
WE TO THEE ERECT THIS STONE
CONSECRATED BY OUR LOVE
NOT LOST BLEST THOUGHT
BUT GONE BEFORE
WHERE WE SHALL MEET
TO PART NO MORE
On that bright immortal shore
We shall meet to part no more.
OUR DARLING BABY
GOD TOOK HIM HOME
WHERE THERE'S NO SORROW
NO DARK PATHS TO ROAM.
OUR FATHER AND MOTHER ARE GONE
THEY LAY BENEATH THE SOD
DEAR PARENTS THO WE MISS YOU MUCH
WE KNOW YOU REST WITH GOD
Parted friends again may meet
From the toils of nature free
Crowned with mercy, O how sweet
Will eternal friendship be!
Peace Perfect Peace
Prepare to meet me in Heaven  Rest, Mother, rest in quiet sleep
While friends in sorrow o'er thee weep
Resting in  hopes
of  a  glorious resurrection
Resting till the resurrection morn.
She died as she lived Trusting in God She is gone to the land where the weary
Enjoy the sweet rapture of sacred repose
She has quitted forever this wilderness dreary
And bid farewell to time and its woes.

She is not dead but Sleepeth She was but words are wanting to say what
Think what a wife should be and she was that
She was by nature gentle, kind and unassuming
Her life was spent in the service of God and her family
She was the sunshine of our home
Sheltered and safe from sorrow.  Sleep on dear child and take thy rest
In Jesus arms forever blest.
Sleep on dear Mamie Thou art at rest
God called thee home He thought it best.
Sleep on sweet babe and take thy rest
God called thee home he thought it best
SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME AND FORBID THEM NOT
FOR OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
Sweet little bud for earth too fair
Hath gave to Heaven to blossom there.
Sweetly Sleeping
The firstborn offspring of our love
Has safely winged its flight above
THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD TAKETH AWAY
BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD
The Lord is good; a stronghold in the day
of trouble and He knoweth them that trust Him.
The pains of death are past
Labor and sorrow cease
And life's long warfare closed at last
His soul is found in peace.
The rose may fade, the lily die
But flowers immortal bloom on high
Beyond the taint of sinful powers
Willie is safe in Eden's bowers.
The tint of health has left his cheeks
And cold is his fair brow
His eyes are closed, his pulse is still
He is an angel now.
There is a bright region above
We long to reach its shore
To join with the dear ones we love
Not lost, but gone before.
There is no parting in Heaven
Those whom God loves die young THOU ART GONE LITTLE INFANT
SWEET CHILD OF OUR LOVE
FROM EARTH'S CAIRY (sic) STRAND
TO BRIGHT MANSIONS ABOVE.
Thy memory shall ever be a guiding star to Heaven  Too good for earth God called him home
Tread softly for an angel band
Doth guard the silent dust
And we can safely leave our boy
Our darling, in their trust.
Underneath this stone doth lie
As much of virtue as could die
Which when alive did vigor give
To as much beauty as could live.
Was borne away by an angel band
We had a little treasure once
He was our joy and pride
We loved oh perhaps to well
For soon he slept and died
We loved this tender little one
And would have wished her stay
But let our Father's will be done
She shines in endless day.
We miss thee from our home dear Mother
We miss thee from thy place
A shadow o'er our life is cast
We miss the sunshine of thy face
We miss the kind and willing hand
Thy fond and earnest care
Our home is dark without thee
We miss thee everwhere.
We Will Meet Again.
Weep not Father and Mother for me
For I am waiting in  glory  for  thee
Weep not, he is at rest
Went to be an angel.
With Christ in Heaven WHY SHOULD WE WEEP FOR HER, WAS SHE NOT READY
OIL IN HER LAMP AND HER BRIDAL ROBES ON
WAITING IN FAITH WITH A HOPE FIRM AND STEADY
THE GOOD SHEPHERD'S CALL AND THE PLAUDITS WELL DONE.
You are not dead to us
But as a bright star unseen
We hold that you are ever near
Though death intrudes between.
Your love and kindness will never be forgotten
