NOTES: Martha Ann Anderson was a firstborn child. As a child of twelve years in 1817, she and her family travelled from Virginia to what is now Todd County, KY. They travelled over the Wilderness Road, passing through the Cumberland Gap. Martha's father was educated in law and was named as a Magistrate in the first slate of Todd County officials in 1820. Martha married John Watson in 1824 and together they raised 8 children in Todd County.

John Watson and Martha Anderson settled on the headwaters of Whippoorwill Creek (between Pond River Road and current KY state highway 181) in Todd County. They received title to their land in 1851 and the land is still owned by their descendants in 2001. John, Martha, and five of their children are buried near their homestead in France Cemetery, which overlooks Whippoorwill Creek.
