Enoch Daugherty was a good debater at the meetings held in local
schoolhouses, by clubs or associations.
The Falmouth Outlook, Friday, March 13, 1942:
Enoch Dougherty, aged 87 years, well-known retired farmer of Butler,
passed way at his home in that city on Monday, Mar. 9, 1942, following
a lingering illness.
Mr. Dougherty was a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Dougherty and
was born at Stewartsville, Ky. He had been a resident of this county
most of his life. He was united in marriage to Miss Nannie Smith and to
this union three sons and five daughters were born, all of whom
survive. They are William of Miles City, Mont., Leslie and Clay of
Butler, Mrs. William Culbertson of Fiskburg, Mrs. Henry Dunaway of near
Butler, Mrs. Floyd Armstrong of Independence, Mrs. Anna Bornemann of
Grassy Creek and Mrs. Charles Boyd of Akron, Ohio. He is also survived
by 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren, also a sister, Mrs. Sol Brown of
Stewartsville, Ky.
Mr. Dougherty was one of Pendleton County's highly esteemed and
substantial citizens. he enjoyed the confidence of his neighbors and
friends and his passing closes a long and useful life.
The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock
C.W.T. at the home, conducted by the Rev. D.P. DeHart, pastor of the
Butler Baptist Church. Burial will take place in The Smith Cemetery.
Funeral directors Tharp & Stith are in charge of the arrangements.

Nannie had bro. Nathaniel, who was killed by Steve Belew. Belew also
killed John Golden in West. Steve was hiding in Ind. Book on Steve
Belew - see Mrs. Lambert also Emmet Dunaway. Steve Belew, son of Mat
Belew. Steve stole $100 from Alexr Calderwll of Gardnersville. John
Golden was bro of old Billy Golden.
Nathaniel was killed by - supposed - Steve Bellew [sic]. Nathan had
deed for Nathaniel's farm, & they went away together &
Nathaniel never ret. Steve did another killing in Ill. Jim, son of old
John Golden. John was bro of Wm Golden Sr. of Gardnersville. John
Golden St. lived in Adams(?) County Ill. Steve Belew also had deed for
Jim Goldens land in Ill. After Steve killed Jim, Steve m. Jim's sister
(in Ill). Steve was tried & hung in Ill. Jim's father prosecuted
Steve Belew. Steve Belew was son of Mat (Madison Belew)

Falmouth Outlook, Friday, November 2, 1934:
Mrs. Enoch Daugherty, aged 78 years, one of the county's highly
esteemed Christian women, passed on Friday, Oct. 26, 1934, at her home
north of Butler.
Miss Nannie A. Smith was born in Grant county Feb. 27, 1856, a daughter
of the late James Smith. She lived for many years in Pendleton county
and was one of its finest citizens. Mrs. Daugherty is survived by her
devoted husband, Enoch Daugherty, to whom she had been married 62
years, and eight children, Mrs. W.R. Culbertson, Fiskburg; Mrs. Henry
Dunaway, Butler, Mrs. F.C. Armstrong, Atwood; Mrs. W. C. Bornemann,
Grassy Creek, Mrs. Charles Boyd, Akron, Ohio; William and Leslie
Daugherty, Terry, Mont., and Clay Daugherty at home. She is also
survived by 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and a host of
other relatives and friends. She was the last member of this Smith
family. Her father was lost at sea during the Civil War.
Mrs. Daugherty was a member of the Grassy Run Baptist Church and was
faithful to its teachings throughout her life. She was loved and
admired for her many Christian virtues. Her last words were, "I am
ready to go."
Those who knew Mrs. Daugherty best always spoke of her many deeds of
kindness and love, and they will hold her sweet character in mind
forever. The esteem in which she was held by her friends was attested
by the many beautiful floral offerings.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Grassy Creek
Christian Church, conducted by Rev. G.C. Mullins of Williamstown.
Burial took place in the Smith family cemetery at Portland. Funeral
directors Stith & Tharp were in charge of arrangements.
Casket bearers were her grandsons, Robert, Foster, and Leonard
Culbertson, Elza and Leslie Dunaway and Walter Armstrong. Flower girls
were her granddaughters, Iva and Cecil Culbertson, Ruby Armstrong, June
Culbertson, Genevieve Dunaway and Edith Ryder.
