Research Report - DUNN
14 September 1999
Research was conducted during this session to prove the parentage of
Mary DUNN who married James MILNER on 30 December 1823 in Harrison
County, Kentucky and who died
14 February 1864 in Brown Township, Hancock County, Indiana. It was
thought that since Samuel DUNN signed as the bondsman on the marriage
bond that perhaps he was Mary’s father. However, if Mary’s father was
deceased at the time of the marriage, her brother or an uncle may have
signed. Even if Mary’s father was living, it was not necessary for him
to appear as the bondsman. Any man of legal age who knew the bride
could represent her in the legal action. Therefore, it is important not
to assume a bondsman is the father until further proof has been
established.
In the 1850 Federal Census enumeration of Brown Township, Hancock
County, Indiana, Mary MILLNER [sic] is listed with her husband James and
six of her children. James and Mary MILNER’s married son Henry R.
MILLNER [sic], his wife Mary A. and their two children are listed above
James’ family on the enumeration. Mary was listed as
fifty-one-years-old and born in Kentucky. Twenty-year-old Abraham
MILNER was born in Kentucky (1830) and seventeen-year-old Lucinda was
born in Indiana (1833), so the MILNER’s moved from Kentucky to Indiana
between 1830 and 1833.
The James MILNER family was again listed in the 1860 Federal Census in
Brown Township, Hancock County, Indiana (no photocopy made). In this
census Mary was listed as fifty-eight-years of age, born in Kentucky.
In the ten years between census enumerations, Mary had only aged seven
years. The only child still living with the MILNERs in 1860 was
twenty-one-year-old William. Daughter Cynthia MILNER (Synthia in the
cemetery record) had died on 25 June 1854 as the age of thirteen years.
Death records were not kept in Hancock County, Indiana until the 1880s,
so Mary’s death was not recorded. However, the book Hancock County,
Indiana Tombstone Inscriptions One Hundred Years 1833-1933, has a
listing in the Hays Cemetery of Brown Township for James MILNER, who
died 14 February 1864 at the age of 61 years, 8 months and 5 days.
This is obviously the grave of Mary, (Mrs. James) since it is known that
James died in 1884 in Greenwood County, Kansas. From her age at death,
Mary’s calculated date of birth is 9 June 1802. So she was younger than
the 1850 census would indicate and the 1860 census age was correct.
Many DUNNs are buried in Hancock County, Indiana in the Dunn Cemetery in
Buck Township (Document #2, page 147-48). Another Mary DUNN was buried
on 30 August 1840 at the age of fifty-two, putting her year of birth at
1788. Samuel DUNN was buried on 20 January 1846 at the age of seventy
years, eight months, putting his year of birth at 1775. This Samuel was
certainly old enough to be the father of Mary (Dunn) MILNER. Other
DUNNs were buried in Buck and Center Townships in Hancock County
(Document #2, pp.157, 169, 341).
>From the Early Landowners of Hancock County, Indiana, it was learned
that Samuel DUNN purchased land in Hancock in 1834. This is about the
same time that James and Mary MILNER moved to Indiana from Kentucky.
Samuel DUNN was listed in Hancock County in the 1840 Census Index of
Indiana, but since he died in Hancock County in 1846, he was not listed
in the 1850 census. However, the other DUNNs who were enumerated in
Buck Township, Hancock County, Indiana in the 1850 census were all from
South Carolina, not Kentucky. There appears to be no obvious connection
between the Samuel DUNN family of South Carolina and Mary (DUNN) MILNER
of Kentucky. The probate records of Hancock County, Indiana were
checked nevertheless. Samuel DUNN died intestate, but his estate was
evaluated in February 1846 in the Hancock County, Indiana probate order
books. These records were filmed out of focus and are very difficult
to read, but it appears that James Hodge (son-in-law) was the
administrator of the estate. The only other name mentioned in the
estate settlement was Maria DUNN.
The Mortality Schedule of Indiana 1850 has a listing for the death of
(a) Sarah DUNN, age 71, in Dearborn County, Indiana. This Sarah was
born in Pennsylvania in about 1779 and would have been twenty-three in
1802 when the ancestral Mary DUNN was born. Sarah DUNN was not listed
in the 1850 Indiana Census Index in Dearborn County, so her enumeration
was not found. Death records were not recorded in Dearborn County until
the 1880s. At this point, it cannot be proved whether this Sarah was
the mother of Mary.
DUNN marriages recorded in Harrison County, Kentucky Marriages
1794-1832 were copied. The name DOAN was sometimes confused with DUNN
in Harrison County and four men with the DOAN name married in Harrison
County. The earliest DUNN marriage was between James DUNN and Keziah
HARRISON in 1796, early enough from them to be the parents of Mary. No
other (male) DUNN marriage took place in Harrison County before 1802.
If Mary’s mother became a widow in Harrison County, there is the
possibility that she remarried there, so all female DONE/DUNN marriages
were also copied (Document 6a, pp.1-38; also, see back of page 38).
Sarah DUNN married James DUNLAP in 1820 and another Sarah DUNN married
Samuel SMITH in 1828.
The cemetery records of Harrison County revealed little. No DUNN burial
took place before 1849. Two children of James L. and Rebecca DUNN were
buried in 1849 (Benjamin and Sarilda). James L. DUNN, born in 1819 and
died in 1866, was buried in Harrison County. His wife Rebecca was born
in 1817 and died in 1872. There is a possibility that James was Mary’s
brother, or perhaps a cousin. Earlier deaths and burials were not
recorded in Harrison County.
>From the early tax and census records of Kentucky it was learned
that
the name DUNN was quite common and was distributed throughout the
state. A Samuel DUNN was recorded in the 1795 tax lists of Mercer
County. This compilation is not a complete list of all Kentucky county
tax lists, but it does show that there was a Samuel DUNN living in
Mercer County in 1795. The “Second Census” of Kentucky is really a
compilation of tax lists rather than an actual census. Samuel DUN and
Samuel N. DUN were listed in Mercer County and Samuel DUNN was listed in
Harrison County. There were at least 11 DUNN households in Harrison
County by 1800.
The most “telling” census of Kentucky, however, was the 1810 record in
which Mary DUNN would have been enumerated as a female under the age of
10. There were 13 DONE/DUN/DUNN households in Harrison County in
1810, but not all had a female under the age of 10. However, there were
a total of 34 DONE/DUN/DUNN households in Kentucky with a female under
the age of ten in 1810. Samuel DUNN of Mercer County had two females
under the age of ten in his household, but Samuel DUN of Harrison County
had none. Households in Harrison County which had females less than 10
were: Benjamin DONE (2), Benedger DUN (2), Joseph DUN (2), Thomas DUN
(1) and Levy DUNN (2). But just because Mary was married in Harrison
County does not necessarily mean she was born there and this, of course,
complicates trying to prove her parentage. Although Mary and James
MILNER did not seem to follow traditional naming patterns with their
children, the children’s names may provide some clues. Their second son
was named Joseph Thomas MILNER.
By 1820 when Mary was eighteen-years-old and three years before her
marriage, there were 12 DONE/DUNN households in Harrison County. The
only Samuel DUNN listed in the Kentucky index was enumerated in
Jefferson County on the Kentucky-Indiana border. Only the DUNN
households of Harrison County were read in the actual census
manuscripts, and only three of the twelve DUNN households had females
between the age of 16 and 26 (other than the female “head” of the
household who in several cases was in that age bracket). Edmond DUNN,
Levi DUNN and Archibald DUNN each had a female between 16 and 26.
Edmond DUNN as the head of a household was between the age of 16 and 26
himself, and looking back at the Harrison County marriages (Document #6,
page 11), Edmund DUNN married Elizabeth MUSSELMAN on 2 October 1818. So
the female (age 16-26) in his household in 1820 was probably his wife.
The female (age 26-45) in his household was probably a sister, aunt,
mother or even a servant. In 1800, “an” Edmond DUNN was in Harrison
County, but in 1810 Edmond was in Warren County in the southeast part of
Kentucky (Bowling Green) and he was over the age of forty-five, so
obviously their were two different Edmonds, possibly father and son.
Archibald DUNN was not listed in Kentucky in 1800 or 1810, so if he was
Mary’s father she was not born in Kentucky and this probably eliminates
Archibald as the father.
Levi (Levy) DUNN was in Harrison County from 1800-1820. Levy DUNN was
over the age of forty-five in 1820, yet in 1810 he was listed as between
16-26. (Again this may be Levi Senior and Levi Junior.) The 1810
census may have been in error, since Levy was listed on the tax lists in
1800 and would not have been on that list unless he was over the age of
18 in 1800. Again looking at the Harrison County marriages, Levy DUNN
married Sarah HINTON on 1 November 1804. Levy and Sarah married too
late to be the parents of Mary DUNN, born in 1802.
Samuel DUNN (age 26-45) of Jefferson County, Kentucky had a female
between the age of sixteen and twenty-six living in his household in
1820. This is not the same Samuel DUNN (over 45) who was enumerated
in Mercer County in 1810. Samuel of 1820 Jefferson County had six
children under 10 years of age and none between 10 and 16. Certainly
this was a very young family and would not have an eighteen-year-old
daughter. Perhaps the female between 16-26 was a sister or servant who
was helping with the young children. It does not appear that this
Samuel was Mary’s father.
Thus far, the census records have not helped in narrowing the
possibilities of Mary’s parentage. The 1830 Kentucky Federal Census was
also read, even though Mary was already married. There were 18 DUNN
households in Harrison County, 10 of those on the west side of Licking
River. Samuel DUNN of “Licking” was between thirty and forty (born
1790-1800), so he clearly was not old enough to be Mary’s father.
Samuel had four children under ten and this is probably the Samuel DUNN
who married Jane McCLAINE on 18 October 1821 in Harrison County. This
in all probability was the Samuel DUNN who acted as the bondsman at
Mary’s wedding. James MILNER was also enumerated in “Licking” in 1830
with two sons under ten. Listed next to James MILNER in the census was
Sarah DUNN (between 60-70 years of age, born 1760-1770), possibly the
widowed mother of Mary and Samuel. Listed next to Samuel in the census
was Abraham DUNN (also between 30-40 years) and probably Samuel’s
brother. Also in the Licking area were Benjamin DUNN, Edmon[d] DUNN,
Elijah DUNN, Jonathan DUNN, Levi DUNN, Richard DUNN and William DUNN.
It is thought at this point, that the ancestral Mary DUNN was more
closely related to this “Licking” DUNNs than to the DUNNs in the
“Eastern Division” of Harrison County.
The Harrison County will abstracts (1795-1853) were read next to see if
relationships could be further established. Samuel DUNN wrote his will
on 22 November 1805 and it was proved in court in April 1806 (page 70,
Document # 17). His wife was Dorothy. Mentioned are Ezeriah DUNN and
Samuel DUNN, Jr. The others mentioned (Ann and Massey’s children) leave
the relationships unclear, so the actual will was copied. It reads:
“the estate to be [ap]praised and sold and divided into five shares
Ezeriah DUNN & Ann & Massey’s children & Mary Gossett’s son
Abraham &
Samuel DUNN junior all said names is to share equal share & share
alike
of the said estate. . .” Unfortunately, it is still unclear who Ann,
Massey and Mary Gossett were. Were they Samuel’s daughters? Was
Abraham the son of Mary Gossett or was he Abraham DUNN? Were Ezeriah
DUNN and Samuel DUNN, Jr. the sons of Samuel? Without stated
relationships, it is difficult to conclude who these people were.
Samuel DUNN was on the Harrison County tax list of 1800 and from other
court records it was learned that he was exempt from paying taxes in
1800 because he was old and infirm. If this Samuel was old and infirm
in 1800, he was probably not the father of Mary, born in 1802, although
it is possible. However, he did not mention a young daughter in his
will and Mary would have been appointed a “guardian” and mentioned in
court records. This Samuel DUNN was dead before the 1810 census was
enumerated, so he was not the Samuel listed in Harrison County in that
census. That Samuel was between 26 and 45, but did not have a daughter
under ten (page228, Document #10). Ezeriah DUNN was not listed in the
1810, 1820 or 1830 Kentucky census indices, so it is not known what
happened to this man.
Samuel DUNN was mentioned in the estate sale of Jonathan EADS in April
1808 (page 74, Document #17). Since Samuel, the elder, died in 1806,
this would be Samuel, Jr. who was enumerated in the 1810 census of
Harrison County. Again, this Samuel did not have a female under 10
living in his household in 1810, so Mary was not his daughter.
Hugh Smith DUNN left a will in Harrison County which was probated in
October 1813 (page 89, Document #17). He mentioned his daughter
Elizabeth MARCHANT, his son-in-law Benjamin HICKMAN, Hugh Smith Dunn
HICKMAN (probably his grandson), Ealse HICKMAN (probably his daughter),
and Sarah DUNN, the daughter of Thomas DUNN (Hugh’s son). He also
mentioned his son Archibald DUNN and Elisha DUNN (presumably another
son). There was no mention of a wife and no mention of a daughter
Mary. Since Hugh Smith DUNN was not listed in the 1810 Kentucky census,
he must have moved to Kentucky between 1810 and 1813 from Maryland (land
in Maryland mentioned in the will).
The will of John HENRY in 1816 Harrison County mentions daughters Betsy
DUNN and Polly DUNN, but these were presumably married daughters (page
101, Document #17).
J.W. DUNN’s will was probated in 1831 in Harrison County. He named his
wife Eliza and two daughters Hannah Jane and Susan Emily (page 150,
Document #17). There was no mention of a married daughter named Mary
MILNER. J. W.’s brother Thomas was the executor.
Thomas DUNN’s will was probated in 1839 and his wife was Harriett (page
182, Document #17). He also mentioned two daughters Martha Ellen and
Ann Thomas.
A “noncupative” will for Edmund DUNN was probated in 1844 (page 206,
Document #17). His wife was Elizabeth and he had infant children and
older children, but they were not named. This was probably Edmund DUNN
who married Elizabeth MUSSELMAN in 1818 in Harrison County (see page 11,
Document #6). Since there was an Edmond DUNN listed in the Harrison
County tax lists in 1800, there presumably was an older Edmund/Edmond
whose will was not found in the Harrison County records.
Benjamin DUNN’s will was probated in 1853 (page 241, Document #17). He
mentioned his wife Patsy, his sons Benjamin, Isaac, Edmond, James Noah,
and Fielden.
Unfortunately none of the Harrison County wills mentioned Mary DUNN or
Mary MILNER, so her father was not established by this means.
DUNN names appeared in other Harrison County court records, but again it
is impossible to establish definitive relationships through this
records. At a murder inquest in 1811, members of the jury included
Benjamin DUNN, Edmond DUNN, Elijah DUNN, John DUNN and Levy DUNN (page
28, Document #18). These men were not necessarily brothers, but may
have been fathers and sons, uncles, cousin, nephews and these DUNNs were
from the”Licking” area.
Not only did Samuel DUNN appear as the bondsman at the marriage of Mary
DUNN in 1823, but also at the marriage of Nancy DUNN to James D. MILNER
in 1825. In 1839, Samuel DUNN was also at the marriage of Jane DUNN to
James ROSE, not as a bondsman, but to give the consent of the bride’s
father Elijah. Samuel DUNN was again a bondsman at the marriage of
Elizabeth DUNN to Robert ROGERS in 1841.
Harrison County probate and estate settlement papers were searched. The
inventory and appraisement of the estate of Edmond DUNN was found in
October 1818. John DUNN and Jane DUNN were the administrators of the
estate. Also mentioned as receiving items from the rather large estate
were:

* Jane DUNN received a good share of the items in the estate and may
have been Edmond’s wife since she was one of the administrators.
The bill of sale and the inventory and appraisement of the estate of
James DUNN was found in the Harrison County probate records in August
1823 and it was also copied. Sarah DUNN and Israel CHANDLER were
administrators of the estate. Receiving items from the estate were:
Benjamin FOOKS Sally DUNN
Uby AKLER William SLADE
Isacc GRUWELL Charles BAYLESS
John SWINFORD Joseph MARTIN
James BROWNFIELD Benajah DUNN
Abijah DUNN William RICE
Thomas CALDWELL Zephaniah DUNN
John HERRINGTON George WOLF
William PRICE Israel CHANDLER
Sarah DUNN Thomas FOSTER
Tapley TAYLOR Hugh NEWELL
Sarah DUNN received a large part of the estate and since she acted as
administrator, she was probably the wife of James DUNN. This was the
only DUNN will or estate settlement in Harrison County with a wife named
Sarah. James died in before August 1823 and Mary DUNN was married in
December 1823. If Sarah DUNN gave her permission for Mary to marry,
presumably it was because Mary’s father was deceased. James seems at
present to be the best possibility as Mary’s father. There was a James
DUNN who married in 1796 in Harrison County, but his wife’s name was
Keziah HARRISON, not Sarah. However, in the printed compilation, the
name may have bee misread as Keziah when it was actually Sarah in the
written records. In the 1820 Kentucky census there was a James DONE
and a James DUNN listed in Harrison County, yet neither James had a
female aged 16-26 in their household. In the 1810 Kentucky census
there were three James DUNNs with daughters under ten, but none in
Harrison County. There was a James DUNN in Washington, Mercer and
Warren counties.
The question of Mary DUNN’s parentage was not answered in this session.
It appears that the DUNN lineage may be even more difficult to prove
than the POWER line with available (surviving) Kentucky sources.
