John Town's company; marched to Cambridge, April 19, 1775. ["The two companies commanded by William Campbell, Captain, and John Town, Captain, include many of the same men. It would appear that the two companies were merged and the rolls at the State House from which the above lists have been copied taken at different times."][page 384]. Capt. Ebenezer Humphrey, Col. CAMPBELL, John of Plainfield. John was born Nov. 2, 1752. Served in the war of the Revolution, and witnessed Burgoyne's surrender to Gates in 1777. Mar. Lydia Kent, June 25, 1783, and settled here as early as 1784. They lived in a small house on the exact site of the old Campbell house, torn down in 1890. His wife Lydia died Sept. 6, 1806, aged 51. He mar. for a second wife, Betsey Hunt of Hawley, Jan. 18, 1809. She died Sept. 7, 1818, aged 38. For a third wife he mar. Mrs. Asenath Claghorn of Hawley, Nov. 1819. Her daughter by her first husband, Mrs. Temperance Atkins, is still living in town. He died April 25, 1833. On list of Revolutionary Pensioners, copied "from Dr. Porter's history of Plainfield. It contains the names of those still living in 1833, with the amount drawn annually by each. The amount is believed to have been based on their length of service." $23 33/100 received. John had acquired great experience as a soldier in the old French War, and served his country faithfully during the Revolution. He was at the capture of Quebec. He was a very useful citizen, held many town offices, and died Feb. 23, 1831, at the advanced age of ninety-two years, leaving a numerous posterity [page 140].
