SMITH, Lemuel of Canton. Son of Asahel. Mr. Smith was born in Stoughton, Dry Pond District, Mass. At the age of 16 enlisted in the Continental Army. When our army moved south Smith was with them. After battle of White Plains NY he was captured and conveyed to NY,
where he was put in a sugar house, where he suffered for 10 months the tortures of hunger, disease and abuse. On being released he returned home on foot through the wilderness and reached Stoughton foot sore, penniless and nearly broken down in health. He died 5 Nov 1846 at the age of 87. John Thompson, called out to reinforce the Northern army; Fifer [page 83]. Capt. Samuel Cooks's company that went to the front and was attached to Col. Woodbridge's regiment in the army of Gen. Gates, Aug. 17 - Dec. 7, 1777, as reinforcements for the Northern army. They took part in the battles of Sept. 19 and Oct. 7, and were present at the surrender of Burgoyne, Oct. 17; Fifer [page 84].
