Johnson Cemetery

Niles Township, Berrien County, Michigan

When I first recorded this cemetery, it was Summer 1964. I have revisited and updated the readings many times since. Johnson Cemetery is #36 in the Michigan Cemetery Atlas of 1991, and in Section 15. Located North of Niles on US-31, go past the M-140 turn off, just as 31 curves, the cemetery is located on the right. The cemetery was laid out on the property of John Johnson (1st) at the St. Joseph River Bend.

This information was complied from many sources, marker inscriptions, family & bible records, obituaries & death notices, old letters, Internet sites, Berrien & Cass county histories & census records. I also crossed referenced Civil War (GAR) Veterans burials with the "Michigan Volunteers, 1861-1865" and have sent that burial information to the Sons of the Veterans of the Civil War for recording on their web site. I have never found any true Sexton records, only notes regarding this cemetery in the Silverbrook Cemetery records. Every effort has been made to be as accurate as possible. As always, I truly welcome additions or corrections.

Johnson Cemetery has the distinction of being among the earliest burial sites in the Berrien County area. The oldest Cemetery in Niles township has to be on the hill where the Father Allouez cross stands on Bond Street, south of Niles. There are many other burials on that hill of the families from Fort St. Joseph.

Johnson Cemetery started as many others do, a family burial area. It also is the final resting place for some of the earliest pioneers to Berrien county. A quiet peaceful grove of old first growth trees and majestic markers. Markers that bear mute testament to the fact that these souls did live, marry, have children, work, play and die.

Our family's tradition tells that the first burial in Johnson Cemetery was a premature still-born infant of George and Fanny [Johnson] Claypool in the Summer of 1831. John Johnson [the childs grandfather] dug the grave, George Claypool [the baby's father] placed the baby, wrapped in a "lap quilt" that belonged to Amelia Johnson [the baby's grandmother], in the grave and marked it with a field stone.
