Long Lake cemetery is located south of Berrien Springs, Berrien Township, Berrien Co., MI, in Section 29, on the east side of Old US-31. It is #48 in the Cemetery Atlas of Michigan, dated 1991.
At the very back of the cemetery can be seen the remains of the "Long Lake", once a "very active fishing hole and turtle pond", according to my grandfather. The cemetery is well maintained and open for burials. Sad to note, that many of the older markers are broken and very worn. Some are missing, possibly fallen and buried by now, since my first recording.
About 1856-57, Long Lake Church was built, at the northern side of the cemetery. The first Trustees were Michael Hand, George H. Claypool and Andrew Burke. I am unaware and cannot document, at this time, just when the cemetery was founded. Burials are dated from the early 1830's, by marker. These could be re-interments from other locations, family cemeteries or the Marrs Farm Cemetery. It has been written, that the bodies, removed from the Marrs Farm, in 1860's, were re-interred in South Union, Long Lake and possibly Maple Grove Cemeteries. That information still does help me put a founding date on this cemetery. I am working on it.
There are two cemetery records for Long Lake, "Journal of Persons Buried and Lot Record of Burials". The Journal is an alphabetical record of persons buried in the cemetery, listing date, place and cause of death, parents, spouse etc. The Lot Record, deals with each burial plot, and persons buried on that lot, by grave number. These records are, incomplete and conflicting at times. A lot of the info. in the books were transcribed from grave markers. Here I have used vital records records, census, marriage, military, family information, obituaries, Internet, Social Security index and foot work, in an attempt to be as accurate as possible. Dates with an asterick (*) are computed from age at death. You can find a Birth Date Calculator online. Please excuse any errors in grammar and data. As usual, I always welcome corrections and additional information.
I just have to share this family story,
told to me, many, many times by Thomas E. Fox (1859-1943), he
was my gr-gand father, a hard working man with a family. In the
Early 1900's, to supplement his farming and seasonal work as a
stone mason, he worked as a "grave digger" at Long Lake
and South Union Cemeteries. One fall morning he was "preparing
a grave", towards the back of the Long Lake cemetery, when
three young lads crossed the cemetery grounds from the school,
fishing poles in hand, followed by two giggling girls. They were
making such a commotion, it caused my gr-grand father to "pop
up from his work". Grampa Tom, was over six feet tall and
big as life, as he rose up from the grave he was digging, he sent
the five youngsters scampering and yelling. Later that evening
there was a loud knock at the door, standing there when Grandma
Sara opened the door, was the father of one of the girls who was
as big as Grampa Tom. He was very upset, mad, at the fact that
Grampa Tom, would jump out of that hole just to scare the poor
children and he felt that Grampa needed to apologize to the kids.
After a brief, loud discussion, a good laugh was had over the
incident. No apologies were made and for years to come, the story
was carried down at family meals and the like....Now I am re-gifting
this story to you all.... DJB
Big thanks to
Mary E. Drolet, for contributing obituary information that added
unknown burials and confirmed others. Thank you to Brenda Sears,
for providing this wonderful platform, to share this work with
all of you.
The photo here is from the original in my collection, taken by William Reddick. Mr Reddick and his dog are in the foreground. The dark looking "line" is the east bank of the dirt road from Niles to Berrien Springs, now paved, wider and known as US-31.

PARTICULARS OF THE DEATH OF TILLMAN RICE
TILLMAN RICE, son of HENRY RICE, of Niles started for Pikes Peak, in company with his brother, JOHN RICE, early this spring. Under date of March 27th, JOHN writes to his father, giving a full account of the death of TILLMAN, and we make the following extracts:
A sad accident has befallen your son TILLMAN. We were traveling up on the Platte River, and saw a Buffalo feeding on a hill at a distance. TILLMAN and five others took their guns and went to kill it, and got close to it behind a hill. One of the men being behind, they stopped for him to come up. He cocked his gun but it would not stand cocked and went off and shot TILLMAN and he dropped in his tracks. They picked him up and took him to the wagon and we had to take him five miles to a house. We sent for a doctor who attended him until he died. My dear brother now lays a corpse by my side. The ball took effect in his right side, close to the back bone, broke his third rib, and passing through the liver, lodged against the skin on the left side. The doctor cut out the ball and he lived about Forty hours in the most pain and anguish of any person you ever saw, and today he breathed his last. No person can describe the pain and misery I have to undergo here in a __?__ with strangers, no one to give a word of consolation. The only word he said about his family was, "Oh God, what will my wife and little children do". He came to his death by accident through carelessness, by a man from Illinois who joined us. He appears to be a fine man and grieved terribly about it. He went for the doctor and was with him the first night. He promises to do all he can to assist the family. We are now over 400 miles west of the Missouri River and 100 miles west of Fort Carney. There is no chance to return your dear child to your arms. I have dressed him as good as I could and to-morrow morning we shall bury him on a beautiful mound by the side of two others as unfortunate as him, one being shot and the other struck by lighting.
Its hard to go and leave him in this lonely place. You have had afflictions, but you have never seen what I have-nor had affiliations like this before. Your child is gone the road that all have to go and may we so live here in this world so that in the morning of the resurrection we may all clasp hands in a world better than this, where death and trouble are no more."
The wife of the deceased is the daughter of, T.R. MARTIN. She is left with three helpless children to mourn the untimely death and irretrievable loss of a husband and parent".
