BECKER, DEMEREAU posted by Scott O'Connor on Friday, December 31, 1999

Charles (AKA Carl) Demereau, born June 1866, Germany, married Amelia Becker, born 1874, Germany. They were wed in 1894, most likely in the US, because they both had been in the States longer than their time married (married 6 yrs in the 1900 Iosco Census). Carl emigrated in 1881, Amelia 1887. All of their children were born in Michigan. They were; Minnie (1895) Martha (1897) William (1899) and the last, Edward, was born in 1905, and drown with his father in Duel Lake, 1914. Minnie is my direct ancestor. So far, I have been unable to find any modern or living relatives with the Demereau surname. I am looking for living relatives named Demereau, as well as the ancestors of Charles and Amelia. Charles apparently owned a farm with his brother, Adolph, who apparently emigrated with Charles. ANY info would be VERY helpful!! I also will share what I have.

I am seeking information on a family that lived in Iosco Co., for many years. Lucy Earl married Thomas Glendon 13 December 1868. Lucy Earl was the daughter of John Earl (Earle) and Lucinda Wilkins. She was born 1 May 1848 in Windham, Norfolk Co., Ontario. She came to Iosco Co., prior to her marriage with her brother Barzillai Miles Earl. Lucinda Earl (the mother) was listed on the 1870 census of Iosco Co. John probably died there as well. Can you help with a death date for John Earl (died between 1861 and 1870) and a death date for Lucy Earl Glendon (I think she died about 1936). Brothers of Lucy Earl Glendon were Nathaniel Churchill Earl, Barzillai Miles Earl, Franklin W. Earl, and the Rev. Wellington Earl. There is record of several of the brothers also being in Iosco Co.

JONES, MCPHAIL, ROGERS posted by Schusan on Friday, December 31, 1999

I am searching for Jones, Rogers and McPhail surnames. My Grandfather George Henry Jones moved to Oscoda at the age of 5 yrs in 1885 with his parents Henry Jones and Susan Rogers Jones from Newcastle, New Brunswick, Canada. He came South with the logging business and met my Grandmother in La. He eventually settled down here and only went back home once or twice. We know he had a sister Ida Jones McPhail who always lived in Oscoda. She didnt have children so there are no Jones or McPhail descendents but there could be Rogers as Susan Rogers had two brothers, Justice and Anthony who also lived in Oscoda. Any info would be welcomed.

KENNEDY, MORRIS, OMEARA posted by Karen O'Meara Terzin on Friday, December 31, 1999

I have been doing some research on the O'Meara family that made their way to AuSable Township from St. Clair County. The logging industry seemed to appeal to my boisterous, fun-loving Irish ancestors.

My great-grandfather, Francis (Frank) Patrick O'Meara was living in Iosco County from at least 1900, until his death in 1909. Without a Census for 1890, I have no way of knowing if he and his family (parents and siblings) arrived before 1900.

Anyhow, Frank was one of the four O'Meara brothers who worked on a logging crew in AuSable. He died as a result of a logging accident. Apparently, the chain used to release the load of logs on the wagon did not drop. Great-Grandpa got under the wagon to release the chain, the lower half of his body sticking out from under the wagon. Apparently, the wagon was overloaded, and some of the logs fell off, crushing Great-Grandpa underneath. He died on 3 Jan 1909, as a result of a broken back and five fractured ribs. He left behind his wife, Mary Evelyn (Eva) O'Meara (nee Morris) and two young sons - Willard Patrick O'Meara, aged 4 and Francis Morris O'Meara, aged 3. Willard was my grandfather. Frank also left behind his parents - Roderick (Rory) O'Meara and Mary Anne O'Meara (nee Kennedy), both living in AuSable. Also, he left his three brothers who also worked on the logging crew. They were John T. O'Meara, Martin (called Mark) O'Meara, and Timothy James O'Meara.

According to my father, Frank was buried in a Catholic section of the Oscoda Cemetary. The only cemetary in Oscoda that I have seen a listing for is Sacred Heart. I would dearly love to find my great-grandfather's grave. He has a headstone and a footstone, with the O'Meara name on it. His birthdate is 26 Oct 1877. His mother, Mary Anne may be buried near him, but I am unsure. If there is anyone who frequents the Sacred Heart Cemetary, would you please take a look? If you find my great-grandpa's grave, would you please give me a holler, and give me directions? It's an awfully long way up there from the Detroit area, and I don't want to waste time searching in an unfamiliar area. I would appreciate it very much.
