PURPLE CONEFLOWER Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench Endangered wild species Bloom: July/ Early August |
VIOLETS May/ June |
Flowers
bloom in Lenawee from
spring to frost. Some are humble and petite while others are tall and
attention-seeking (okay sun-seeking). To the left are ones commonly
seen in Lenawee County and would have brought joy, or consternation, to our
early residents just as they do for us today. Some were used for home
remedies while others could be cooked for food. Did you know there is a recent trend encouraging the planned planting of MI wildflowers in gardens? Some groups are even offering grants for such projects to help in the preservation of our natural history and to help educate today's youth in the different flora and fauna.
Each of the photos at left are thumbnails. So if you need to see them closer, click on the picture of your choice and it will open the file up larger.
