In Memoriam

Jabez T. HOUSE was born in Herkimer county, N.Y. Jan 21, 1817. He left his earthly home for heaven, where he so longed to go and be at rest, on the early morning of June 14, 1897, at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 24 days.
In the year 1838 he came to Plymouth, Michigan. On November 3, 1841, he was married to Miss Lydia Gorton. They lived in Wayne and Washtenaw counties for 24 years, and on New Year's day, 1862, he with his wife and seven children, removed to his farm in Bennington, where he remained until his death, The deceased was born of christian parents, and at the early age of 14 years he gave himself to God, and at 17 years he joined the M.E. church where he remained a faithful member until he severed his connection with the church militant to join the triumphant. He was sick but a short time, and although not in pain, he suffered intense agony, caused by heart failure. When rational he was patient in suffering, also cheerful and hopeful to the last. He was deeply interested in religious and also in temperance work. His church pew was never unoccupied when he was able to be present, and in his younger years would walk miles after a hard day's work to attend religious services, although his strength failed him, the love for his Master never wavered.
During his short illness his voice was heard many times in prayer and supplication for the unsaved, and also that Christian ,men might be led to where they stood in the great question of temperance, which he believed to one of the worst evils of the land.
He was a successful farmer, a good citizen and neighbor, a kind husband, a loving and indulgent father. He leaves a wife, one son, and three daughters, to mourn his loss. Four sons and one daughter preceeded him to the better land. He will be greatly missed by his neighbors and friends, and especially by the immediate family, and by the brother and sister, nephews and nieces, all of whom found in him a firm friend and cousellor.
Although our hearts are saddened by the separation, we realizse that our loss is his gain, and we have his earnest, Christian life for a reminder that if we are faithful to the last, we too shall receive a crown of life and meet our loved one where parting in unknown.

"Dad spent most of his life in two other states--Kentucky and California-- but his heart was always in Michigan; He was a staunch Michigander. He was so proud of his rooots in his natiuve state and especially here in Owosso," says Nuss, 41, who notes that her parents were married Nov 25, 1944, in Austin, where she has lived for the past 12 years. "The interesting thing about that is that Dad and Mom got married while he was stationed in Austin for only 6 months--at Camp Swift in Bastrop, which is a small town 20 miles outside Austin."
Phillip Merrill Jr. was born June 12, 1923, at Memorial Hospital in Owosso. He graduated from Morrice High School on his birthday in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Army the following year. He rose to the rank of technical sergeant and was a welding instructor. He met his future wife, Clarine Louise Eckmann, while he was stationed in Ft. Know, Ky. , near Louisville, where Eckmann was from. After they were married in 1944, Merrill was stationed in St. Dizier, France, until his honorable discharge from the Army in April, 1946.

Merrill received an associate's degree in professional accountancy from Spencerian Business College in Louisville and joined the credit department of Standard Oil Company in 1951. He attended the evening program at Indiana University's extension campus in Jeffersonville, Ind. for several years, acquiring about 30 hours of credit towards a bachelor's degree in business administration.
In 1978, Merrill was transferred to the worldwide accounting headquarters for then Chevron USA in Concord, Calif., where he worked until his retirement in 1985. He returned to Louisville, where he remained until his death,

Deeply Mourned
Newcomb MITCHELL of Bennington, Died Leaving Many Friends-An Honorable Citizen.

Died in Bennington, Oct. 31st, 1898. Mr. Newcomb Mitchell, aged 77 years, one nonth and nine days. The deceased was born in Bennington. November, Sept. 22 nd, 1821, and was the son of Newcomb and Polly Hane Mitchell, and was one of a family of eleven children. When a child Newcomb, jr, moved with her parents to Syracuse, N.Y., and from there to Lyons, and then to Wyoming, N.Y. In 1844 he removed to Salem, Washtenaw county, Michigan.
His boyhood days were devoid of pleasure, and toil and privation seemed his lot. He labored until twenty years of age when he went to Buffalo and apprentied himself to the trade of a mason which avocation he followed for many years.
In the fall of 1847 he went to Lansing and engaged in the grocery trade. In the winter of 1849 he came to Bennington, and the following summer, with the help of his brother, he made and burned the first kiln of brick made in Shiawassee county, after which he built the Octagon school house, near what is now the Maple river church., The year 1852 found him in the employ of the Michigan Central Railroad. The same year he retruned to Bennington and commenced to improve his farm, which he had purchased in 1846, on this he has resided until his death. In 1855 he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza, daughter of Dyer Phelps. To them nine children have been born, three boys and six girls. Of these six chilren with their widowed mother survive him. So thoroughly was he imbued with the spirit of industry, he often walked to Owosso to work at his trade and when his days' work was done would spend his evenings doing plastering work for others.
He was a friend to all, a kind husband, an indulgent father and a neighbor who was ever ready to lend a helping hand to the distressed and afflicted, and many will remember that their journey through life was made brighter through the aid and encouragement of Uncle Newcomb.
The deceased was a steward of the Pittsburg church, of which he was a faithful member for over twenty years, and will be sadly missed from that society. A few kind words that fell from the lips of Rev. Strong in paying tribute to his departed friend, while delivering the funeral discourse, we are construined to repeat. Rev. Strong said: "He who lies in death before me today was the truest friend I ever had through all the trials of my vocation as a minister of the gospel."
