TILLMAN
HIS HEAD WAS CUT OFF
John TILLMAN, of Byron, Met a Terrible Death in Corunna Last Evening.
Fell from an Ann Arbor train, rolled under the car and was instantly killed, the Wheels passing over his neck --was Seventy-four years old--brother of D.M. Tillman of Durand.
Corunna, Oct. 23,(1906)--Special.--John Tillman, aged 74 years, a resident of Byron, met a most horrible death at the Ann Arbor depot, in this city, at 5:22 last evening. He fell from a car, rolled under the trucks, which passed over his neck, severing the head from the body, causing instant death.
The train was the southbound Ann Arbor passenger, and the old man was taking the train for home, having spent the afternoon here. The terrible tragedy was witnessed by half a dozen people, who agree on their story.
Mr. Tillman had come to town to confer with Register of Deeds J.D. Royce and the probate court relative to the estate of his daughter, Ida, who was accidentally killed a few weeks ago by falling down a flight of cellar steps. He is an old friend of Register Royce and they had quite a chat during the afternoon.
He was around town until after 5 o’clock, when he started for the depot to take the train. The train arrived ahead of him and was starting out when the old man reached the west end of the long cement platform which extends from the street to the east end of the depot. He was running as fast as his infirmities would permit and grasped the rail on the front end of the rear coach.
He was weakened by the run which with the fact that the train was under way, made it impossible for him to get a firm enough grip on the rail to draw himself on the car. He slipped and fell, rolling on the track in front of the trucks, which had passed over his neck before anyone could make a move.
The train stopped before it had gone a rod, but just as the rear trucks were on the man’s neck. The head was severed from the body and the man was dead before the train was backed up and the remains of the man lifted to the platform.
The body of Mr. Tillman was a ghastly sight, with the head severed and terribly mutilated. Sheriff Jarrad was summoned and he called Coroner G.W. Loring. A jury was impaneled and the case will be considered in the court house Wednesday afternoon. Whether the conductor or brakeman saw the old man trying to get on the train or whether they could have helped him is not positively known yet, but will come out in the inquest.
People who have known Mr. Tillman for many years declare him to have been a worthy man, sober and upright.
He leaves a wife and the following children: Mrs., A. J. Westlake, of Byron; Mrs. Ed. Benson, of Burns; Mrs. Woodthorpe, of Vernon; Frank Tillman, of Burns; He was a brother of D. M. Tillman of Durand, and a half brother of A. A. Tillman, of Hancock, formerly of Owosso.
The remains were turned over to Undertaker A. W. Curtis, who sent them to Byron today.
