RESEARCHERS TIP: The entry for John TUBBS and Stacy MATTERSON is an example of how elusive records can be for researchers. Stacy was my husband's great grandmother. When she married Grandpa Tubbs her surname was MADISON. She was the widow of Greatgrandpa George Madison. Even in her marriage to George, his surname was incorrectlly spelled MATERSON. We had to literally search each marriage record to find her name. It took 2 months and many hours at the courthouse to find her name listed. Spelling was not a criteria for county clerks (neither was good handwriting as we well know) and names were often spelled as the clerk thought they sounded. Checking all possible variants of the surname you are seeking is a good practice to develop and can save you time.
