John Tyler JOHN TYLER, The tenth President of the United States was born in Charles-City County, Virgnia, on March 29, 1790. Tyler was a favored child of affluence and high social position. At the early age of twelve years, Tyler entered William & Mary College and graduated with honors at the age of seventeen. After graduating, Tyler devoted himself too studying law under both his father and Edmund Randolph, a lawyer held in high regard by the public and considered quite distinguished among others in the legal profession in Virginia. At just nineteen years old, Tyler opened his own law office. His success was rapid and astonishing. It was said, that in less than three months after opening his office, their was scarcely a case on the docket of the court in which Tyler had not been retained. By his twenty-fifth birthday, Tyler had been unanimously elected too a seat in the Virginia State Legislature. He connected himself with the Democratic Party and he warmly advocated the political measures of Presidents Jefferson and Madison. Tyler was elected too the Legislature for five consecutive Terms, each time garnering nearly all of the available votes. |
