GAINES, Percy F., railroad official; born, Detroit, Jan. 8, 1863; son of John and Mary (Richards) Gaines; educated in public schools of Detroit and Bay City; married at Saginaw, Mich., June, 1888, Miss Alice Rose. Began active career as clerk in local freight office Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Ry., 1882; became connected with general freight department Flint & Pere Marquette R.R. at Saginaw, Mich., 1885; then was one year with Cincinnati, Saginaw & Mackinaw R.R.; returned to freight department Flint & Pere Marquette R.R.; came to Detroit, 1901, as assistant general freight agent of the Pere Marquette Ry.; has been general freight agent of the same road since November, 1905. Member American Association Freight Traffic Officers. Independent in politics. Congregationalist. Clubs: Fellowcraft, Transportation, Mycological. Recreation: Outdoor Sports. GALLAGHER, Frank, manufacturer; born, Palo, Ill., Oct. 13, 1865; son of Eli B. and Esther (Underwood) Gallagher; educated in public schools of Palo; married in Iowa, 1886, Mary L. Tubbs. Began active career in retail bakery and confectionery business, 1885; entered wholesale trade, bakers’, confectioners’ and soda fountain supplies, Chicago, 1892; came to Detroit, 1897, and is president E. B. Gallagher & Co., organized, 1899, incorporated, 1901. Republican. Methodist. Member A.F.&A.M., R.A.M. Office: 133 Jefferson Av. Residence: 115 Harmon Av.

GALLOGLY, Elmer Ellsworth, president Morse Advertising Agency; born, near Zanesville, O., Aug. 15, 1862; son of James (M.D.) and Elizabeth (West) Gallogly; educated in public schools of Zanesville; married at Omaha, Neb., May 7, 1896, Miss Elizabeth Heslet, who died at Detroit, Mar. 27, 1904; again, Asheville, N.C., Jan. 11, 1906, Mrs. May Lorimer. Studied pharmacy and chemistry at Zanesville; employed as drug and prescription clerk, Austin, Tex., 1883, and at Miles City and Helena, Mont., 1886-90; entered retail drug business at Butte, Mont., as E. E. Gallogly & Co., February, 1891, selling out, August, 1900; removed to Detroit, April, 1902. Began in advertising business at Butte, September, 1901, and has been at head of Morse Advertising Agency since its organization; vice president The Herpicide Co.; also operator in ranches and timber lands of Ravalli Co., Mont., on own account. GANAPOL, Boris L., concert singer and teacher of music; born, Svenigoradka, Russia, July 10, 1864; son of Moses Leon and Sara (Kahn) Ganapol; educated in music at Imperial Conservatory, Kieff, Russia, 1884-89, graduating, 1889; served in grand opera as leading baritone for two years; married at Detroit, May 29, 1900, Lilla Grace Smart. Came to America and located in Detroit, 1891; director Ganapol Music Studios, Detroit, since 1901; director Temple Beth El choir. Republican. Jewish religion. Recreation: Reading. GANS, Emmett W.; born, Sparta, O., May 20, 1861; son of Dr. D. L. and Margaret Gordon (Hanna) Gans; educated at Hiram College (O.) Preparatory School; University of Indianapolis, Butler College, degree of Ph.B., 1887; Spencerian Business College, Cleveland. Married at Mansfield, O., Aug. 17, 1892, Mary Churchill Weldon (now deceased). Was with The Burrows Bros. Co., Cleveland, for a few months after leaving college; identified for eighteen years with the Aultman-Taylor Machinery Co., Mansfield, O., successively as general salesman, manager of collections and general superintendent, also was director in the company; for a number of years has been actively connected with the Western Straw Board Co., St. Mary’s, O.; has been in general management of the Reliance Motor Car Co. since January, 1907. Member advisory board Farmers’ Savings and Trust Co., Mansfield, O.; director and treasurer The Western Straw Board Co.; also of the Bloomer Bros. Co., St. Mary’s, O. GARDNER, Oliver N., Detroit manager Otis Elevator Co.; born, South Rockwell, Mich., July 19, 1872; son of John K. and Sarah (Whitsey) Gardner; educated in public schools of Detroit; married at Detroit, 1898, Adele Elblein. Began active career as apprentice boy Michigan Elevator and Engine Co., 1889, which was succeeded by the Gardner Elevator Co., 1896, of which was secretary and treasurer; company sold out to Otis Elevator Co., August 1, 1906; has been manager at Detroit for Otis Elevator Co., manufacturers of passenger and freight elevators, since August, 1906. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Mason, Knight Templar, Shriner. Clubs: Detroit, Fellowcraft, Munoskong Hunting and Fishing (treasurer); Toledo (Toledo, O.). Recreations: Hunting and fishing. GARTON, Charles; born, Boston, Eng., Dec. 4, 1862; son of Benjamin and Susannah Garton; came to America, 1875, and was educated in public schools of England and Detroit and Detroit night school; married, Detroit, 1896, Miss Marie Koepcke. Began active career as office boy, at age of 14, in office of R. W. Allen; at 16 went to Chicago and later St. Louis, and became connected with dry goods business with Penny & Gentles Co.; returned to Detroit, 1885, engaged with James Lowrie & Sons, retail dry goods, and later with Macauley & Co., wholesale milliners, as traveling salesman, until 1898; was one of the organizers of Mitchell, Moody & Garton Co., 1898, incorporated same year, and has since continued as member of the company. Independent in politics. Presbyterian. Club: Commercial. Recreations: All lines of outdoor sports. Office: 158-160 Jefferson Av. Residence: 77 Hague Avenue.

GARVEY, William V.; born, Detroit, July 14, 1868; son of John and Mary (Doherty) Garvey; educated in public and high schools, Detroit, and Spencerian Business College; married at Detroit, Sept. 5, 1894, Nellie A. Morrow. Began active career as assistant bookkeeper Martin Maier & Co., March, 1888; became bookkeeper and cashier for the firm, 1897; admitted to firm and elected secretary and treasurer, 1905, manufacturers and retailers of trunks, bags and travelers’ goods. Catholic. Club: Commercial. Recreation: Yachting. Office: 102 Woodward Av. Residence: 684 Morrell St.

GAST, Gustav L., furniture manufacturing; born, Prussia, Germany, June 1, 1868; son of William and Louisa (Smud) Gast; came to Detroit, 1877; educated in schools of Germany and Detroit; married at Detroit, 1889, Miss Ida Kern (deceased, 1899); again, Detroit, 1901, Miss Minnie Kern. Learned trade of cabinet maker in Detroit with Herman Bock; organized the Detroit Furniture Manufacturing Co., 1892, and has since been president and manager of the company. Republican. Lutheran. GATES, George Herbert, wholesale hats and caps; born, Somerset, Mich., Apr. 26, 1857; son of William Richard and Elizabeth (Mosher) Gates; educated in Hudson (Mich.) High School; married at Genesee, Ill., 1879, to Miss D. A. Farwell. Began active career at Morenci, Mich., where he was engaged in general merchandising, 1873-85; went to Omaha, Neb., and was in wholesale business until 1902; returned to Morenci, Mich., and became president Bank of Morenci, continuing until 1896; came to Detroit, 1896, and has been at the head of G. GATES, Jasper C., lawyer; born, Pleasantville, Pa., Mar. 23, 1850; son of Rev. Aaron and Amanda Malvina (Cross) Gates; educated at Pleasantville (Pa.) Academy; Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., graduating, C.E., 1872, A.B., 1873, honorary degree of A.M., 1893; Albany Law School, LL.B., 1874; married at Kalamazoo, Mich., Oct. 8, 1878, Miss Lulu Foster. GAY, James P.; born, Hamilton, Ont., Apr. 26, 1857; son of James and Catherine (Kennedy) Gay; educated in public schools; married at Hamilton, 1882, Jessie Young. Began railway service at Hamilton, in parcel office of Great Western Rd. of Canada, 1873, later in office of local freight agent at London and Hamilton, Ont.; was in general freight office Grand Trunk Ry. at Hamilton and Toronto, and became chief clerk to traffic manager D.G.&H.R.R., at Detroit; division freight agent at Stratford, Ont., 1902-04; has been manager Grand Trunk Despatch (sic) and Milwaukee and Michigan Fast Freight Lines since June 1, 1904. Republican. Presbyterian. Member A.O.U.W., Royal League. Clubs: Transportation (Detroit and Buffalo). Office: 12 Brush St. Depot. Residence: 179 Alexandrine Av., W.

GEER, Harrison, lawyer; born, Sterling, near Utica, Mich., Aug. 18, 1843; son of James S. and Mary Ann (Weston) Geer; educated in public schools of Lapeer, Mich., and Eastman Business College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., graduating, August, 1863; married at Lapeer, June 29, 1876, Abbie F. White. Admitted to the bar at Flint, Mich., April, 1865; began active practice in January, 1869, at Lapeer; formed partnership with Silas B. Gaskill, which continued until January, 1877; has been in partnership with William B. Williams since January, 1879; came to Detroit, May 1, 1894. For many years has been connected with legal department of the Grand Trunk Railway System and has had charge of trials of a majority of cases of the company since 1894. Was collector of customs at Port Huron, Mich., 1889-93. Office: 18 Buhl Blk. Residence: 694 Woodward Av.
