Began in coffee, tea and spice business, in Detroit, 1888, later going to New York, where he was connected with Packard, Thomas & Co., and Eppens, Smith & Wiemann; returned to Detroit, 1895, and became manager of the manufacturing department of Phelps, Brace & Co., continuing six years; organized firm of Gould & Gehlert, 1901, the title becoming Gehlert Coffee Co., 1903, which still continues. GEMMER, George Andrew; born Williamsport, Ind., Sept. 3, 1876; son of Phillip and Marie (Fleming) Gemmer; graduate Purdue University, degree of M.E., 1899; married, Marion, Ind., 1901, Miss Nettie Brown. Began active career in Marion as manufacturer of stationary engines, 1899; changed to manufacture of automobile parts, 1903; removed to Detroit, May, 1907, and continues as Gemmer Manufacturing Co. GEORGE, Charles J., contractor; born, Detroit, Nov. 21, 1857; son of Henry and Harriet E. (Hughes) George; educated in public schools. Learned carpenters trade under his father and has engaged in contracting and building since 1877; president George & Co. GEORGE, Edwin S., furrier; born, Slatington, Pa., Sept. 23, 1873; son of Manno D. and Abigail (Hamm) George; educated in public schools of Morenci, Mich., and Fayette Normal School; married at Detroit, Sept. 5, 1899, Bessie Scotten. Came to Detroit, 1890, and entered employ of Annis & Miller, furriers; on dissolution of the firm he continued in the fur business with the junior partner, William H. Miller, continuing until March, 1897, when he began alone; soon after bought out the business of Walter Buhl & Co. and consolidated it with his own, and continues as wholesale and retailer dealer, importer and exporter of furs.
