GUENTHER, Fred, insurance; born, Detroit, Apr. 17, 1859; son of Peter and Magdalena (Herterich) Guenther; educated in parochial schools, German-American Seminary, Detroit, and Detroit High School, graduating from the latter, 1877; married at Mount Clemens, Mich., 1893, Emma Kendrick. Began active career in office of his father, who was justice of the peace, and remained for 3 years; entered into partnership with brother under title of Guenther Bros., general insurance agents, 1880, and since 1883 has continued in same line alone; also agent for ocean steamship lines. Director Home Savings Bank; secretary F. A. Thompson & Co., Inc. Was member Detroit Board of Park Commissioners, 1891-95. Member Fire Underwriters’ Association, National Association of Local Fire Insurance Agents (vice president), German Salesmen’s Association, Turners’ Society, Concordia Society, Arion Society. GUEST, Edgar Albert, writer; born, Birmingham, England, Aug. 20, 1881; son of Edwin and Julia (Wayne) Guest; came to America, May, 1891; educated in Detroit public and high schools; married at Detroit, June 28, 1906, Nellie Crossman. Has been connected with the Detroit Free Press since 1895, serving in all reportorial capacities; has conducted an original column of verse and humorous sketches, daily except Monday, since 1906. GULLEY, Orrin P., register of deeds; born, Dearborn, Mich., Nov. 13, 1858; son of Alfred B. and Sophia A. (Abel) Gulley; educated in district school and at Michigan Agricultural College, graduating degree of B.S., Nov. 21, 1879; married at Detroit, Dec. 31, 1890, Susan Ida Read. Republican. Was supervisor of township, 1894-97; county poor commissioner, 1898-02; has been register of deeds, Wayne County, since Jan. 1, 1903. Presbyterian. Member Masonic order (32º), Knights Templar; K.O.T.M., National Union, Phi Delta Theta. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Recreations: Hunting, fishing and baseball. Office: County Bldg. GUNDERSON, Gunnar Bert, secretary and treasurer Detroit Stove Works; born, Chicago, Jan. 31, 1860; educated in public schools, Chicago, up to 14; married at Waco, Tex., Apr. 9, 1902, Martha Brooks. Began active career as clerk in hardware store at 14; stenographer in law office at 19, also law student at same time, 1879; became stenographer for firm of Fuller & Warren Co., Chicago, 1880, and later assistant manager, when accepted similar position with Chicago branch of the Detroit Stove Works, 1891; removed to Detroit as treasurer of the company, 1893, and in a few years became director, secretary and treasurer. Organized, with W. T. Barbour, the Northern Motor Car Co., 1902, of which is vice president and director. Director National Bank of Commerce. Democrat previous to 1896. Protestant. GUTHARD, Henry J., fire insurance; born, Detroit, Jan. 19, 1871; son of Jacob and Louise (Aberle) Guthard; educated in public and high schools of Detroit; married at Detroit, June 5, 1894, Miss Hattie Shamberg. Began active career in employ of Elias Aberle, real estate and fire insurance, continuing until 1891, when he succeeded Mr. Aberle in the fire insurance interests under firm name of H. J. Guthard; was joined by his father, 1900, and the title of the firm has since been Jacob Guthard & Son. Director American National Life Insurance Co. of Detroit, and U. S. Casualty Co. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Republican. Protestant. Mason; member B.P.O.E. Clubs: Harmonie, Fellowcraft, German Salesmen, Detroit Athletic. Recreations: Shooting and other outdoor diversions. GUTHARD, Jacob, fire insurance; born, Hessen, Germany, June 7, 1846; son of Henry and Mary (Schneider) Guthard; came to America, 1854; educated in public schools of Germany and Detroit; married at Detroit, 1870, Louise Aberle. Learned steamfitting trade and worked as journeyman until the Civil War; enlisted Aug. 16, 1861, in 9th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, and served 13 months, being seriously wounded at battle of Murfreesboro; was physically unable to follow his trade and learned shoemaking trade, in which he engaged for 7 years; was in grocery business at different times, 1868-1890; entered insurance business of his son, 1896, since which time the firm has been Jacob Guthard & Son. Also president U.S. Casualty Co. of Detroit; director American National Life Insurance Co., and of the Steel Cooperage Co. Republican; alderman 6th ward since 1903; superintendent Wayne County Poor 3 years; receiver of taxes, Wayne County, 5 years; commissioner of public works, 6½ years. Protestant in religious belief. HAARER, Jacob John, commissioner of public works; born, Manchester, Mich., Oct. 4, 1864; son of Ernest G. and Hannah Katherine (Knapp) Haarer; educated in district school, Manchester High School, Elmhurst College, Ill., Olivet College, Mich., and University of Michigan to 1885; married, Plymouth, Mich., Jan. 23, 1907, Edith Dot Noyes. Raised on a farm until 16; after leaving university, came to Detroit and filled position as clerk in drug store; entered drug business on own account, 1894, continuing until July 1, 1905, since which time has been commissioner of Public Works. Member Michigan National Guard for ten years; advanced from private to corporal and sergeant and received honorable discharge; member Common Council, City of Detroit, five years (president, 1901). Hudson, general merchandise; entered service of The Home Savings Bank as messenger, at the time of the organization of the bank, 1889, continued through various positions and has been cashier of the bank since May, 1894; director Security Trust Co.; director and secretary George H. HABERKORN, C.H., manufacturer of furniture; born, Detroit, July 27, 1856; son of Henry and Margaret (Kolby) Haberkorn; educated in public schools up to 11 and thereafter in school of experience; married at Detroit, Oct. 24, 1884, Fannie H. Ruehle. Went to San Francisco early, where he remained until 1874, and assisted in building the Palace Hotel, which was destroyed by earthquake, 1906; returned to Detroit in 1878, entered furniture business, in which he has since continued; president and treasurer of C. H. Haberkorn & Co., manufacturers of parlor, library and directors’ tables. Motto: Any boy or man can succeed who always does a little more than he is paid to do. Member Presbyterian Church. Associate member G.A.R. Member Archaeological Society of Detroit and Geographical Society of America. Clubs: Country, Detroit and Wayne. Recreations: Golf, billiards and motoring. HAIGH, Henry A., lawyer; born, Dearborn, Mich., Mar. 13, 1854; son of Richard and Lucy (Allyn) Haigh; educated in public schools of Dearborn, 1862-70; Michigan Agricultural College, graduating, degree of B.S., 1874; University of Michigan, degree of LL.B., 1878; married at Detroit, 1895, Caroline L. Comstock (two sons, Andrew Comstock and Richard Allyn). Was admitted to the bar, 1878; began practice in Detroit, 1879, and was in active practice about fifteen years; associated with late Colonel John Atkinson, Hon. William L. Carpenter (since chief justice of Michigan) and Hon. F. L. Brooke, now judge Wayne County Circuit Court. Became interested in various industrial enterprises, 1899; one of the organizers and builders of the Toledo, Fremont and Norwalk Railway (inter-urban electric, 65 miles), now constituting part of the main line of Lake Shore Electric Ry.; also Rochester and Eastern Railway (50 miles), now owned by New York Central Ry. Co.; at present engaged in completing Milwaukee Northern Railway (121 miles), an inter-urban electric system extending north and northwest form Milwaukee. One of the organizers and incorporators of the Continental Casualty Company of Chicago. President Detroit Sanitarium Co.; treasurer Comstock-Haigh-Walker Company, railway engineers and constructors; treasurer and general counsel Milwaukee Northern Railway; Michigan counsel Continental Casualty co.; director Peninsular Savings Bank, of Detroit, Alpena Power Co. Republican; presidential elector, 1892; alternate delegate-at-large, Republican National Convention, 1896.
