P. and Emeline (Bulkeley) Hall; educated in academies at Binghamton and Albany, N.Y., and Yale University, graduating, 1856; married at Detroit, Jan. 11, 1860, Alexandrine Louise Godfrey. Studied law one year and acted for a short time as assistant manager of newspaper; was with the Central Bank, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and later with Thompson Bros., brokers, Wall St.; removed to Detroit, 1859, and with L. E. Clark and others established the State Bank of Michigan, which later was merged into the First National Bank of Detroit; entered grain commission business, 1863, on Detroit Board of Trade; entered into partnership in commission business, in 1868, under firm name of Gillett & Hall, continuing until 1888, when he retired from active business. Recreations: Travel and literature. Residence: Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. HAMBURGER, Frank R.; born, Newark, N.J., Apr. 15, 1864; son of Solomon and Mariam Hamburger; educated in public and night schools of Detroit. Came to Detroit with parents, 1866; sold newspapers on streets, 1874-80; learned carriage trimming and worked at the trade in Michigan, Kansas and Nebraska for nine years; engaged as salesman in wholesale clothing business, 1890, bought out employers interest, 1900, since which time he has been member of the firm of Hamburger & Silberman and manager of the house. Was secretary East Side Electric Lighting Co., 1895-1900.Member Detroit Association of Credit Men (chairman legislative committee) and National Association of Credit Men (member national legislative committee). Has been a resident of Detroit since 1883; became connected with the Clinton Woolen Mills, Clinton, Mich., at the beginning of his active career and has been vice president and treasurer of the company since 1889. HAMILTON, William Pegram, manufacturer and banker; born, Owensboro, Ky., Dec. 17, 1863; son of David and Martha (Pegram) Hamilton; educated in public schools of Kentucky and at Glasgow University, Glasgow, Scotland; married at Detroit, Dec., 1890, Mary McClellan Farrand. Came to Detroit from Glasgow, 1883; began active career in State Savings Bank (established by his father), where he continued for three years; then removed to Clinton, Mich., as treasurer of the Clinton Woolen Manufacturing Co., became president, 1889, and still continues in that position. Also vice president National Bank of Commerce since its establishment, June 1, 1907. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Republican. Presbyterian. (Noble) Hamlin; educated at Sterling; grammar and high schools of Philadelphia; Bryant & Stratton Business College; married at Piqua, O., Jan. 1, 1890, Julia H. Harlow. Began at 17 in mercantile and lumber business with his father at Sterling; bought out his fathers interest, 1875, and continued in his own name until 1889, also entering lumber business at Ridgeway, Pa., as Hamlin & Gilpin, 1882; sold out and moved to Winston, N.C., 1889, and to Detroit, 1892; incorporated an old established business, The Horton-Cato Manufacturing Co., Jan. 1, 1893, manufacturers of fine table products, and since 1900 has been president, manager and owner of the company. Mansfield & Co., flour manufacturers, 1875-77; was with J. H. Wendell & Co., grain commission, and Horace Turner, furniture, after which he entered service of the Globe Tobacco Co., in 1879, and has ever since been identified with the company, first as bookkeeper, next as secretary and treasurer, 1891, and since 1901as general manager, secretary and treasurer. HAMPTON, Charles S., lawyer; born, Medina, Mich., Sept. 10, 1856; son of Dr. Carlos D. and Cornelia C. (Drown) Hampton; educated in public schools of Hudson and Muir, Mich., and Adrian (Mich.) College, graduating, B.S., 1875, M.S., 1878; married at Adrian, Sept. 8, 1886, Lida A. Russell. Was principal schools at Harbor Springs and Petoskey, Mich., 1875-78; began practice of law at Harbor Springs, also dealing in real estate, 1878, and started newspaper, Emmet County Independent; moved to Petoskey, 1887, consolidated two newspapers and published as Independent Democrat, also published Petoskey Daily Resorter, and bought Charlevoix Democrat, 1890; sold out interests, removed to Detroit, 1900, and resumed practice of law. Director Lapeer Light and Power Co., U.S. Concrete Machine Co. Independent Democrat.
