(at one and the same time), continuing until 1890; rolling mill superintendent for Detroit Steel and Spring Co. until Mar. 1, 1902, when it was merged into the Railway Steel Spring Co., 71 Broadway, New York, of which has since been superintendent Detroit plant. HARISON, Beverly D., physician; born, Canton, N.Y., May 8, 1855; son of Minturn Harison and Susan (Drake) Harison, daughter of Judge Caleb Beverly Drake, Ithaca, N.Y.; his first American ancestor, Francis Harison, barrister of London, Eng., landed in New York, 1708, member North American Council, 1820-40; son George married Jane Nichol, adopted daughter of General Richard Nichol, commander North American station, and who named New York, and his grandson, Richard Harison, first U.S. district attorney of New York, married Frances, daughter of Sir George Duncan Ludlow, chief justice of New Brunswick; educated in Bishops College School, Lennoxville, Que., Trinity College School, Port Hope, and by private tutelage up to 1872; Literary Department, University of Trinity College, Toronto, 1873-77, Medical Department, Toronto University, degree of M.D., 1882. Began active career in employ of H. P. Baldwin, 2d & Co., continuing for seven years; engaged in real estate business on own account, 1888-98; then in military service until mustered out; was one of the promoters and was elected director of the Detroit, Monroe & Toledo R.R.; became interested in Cuban lands and development and up to 1907 made fourteen trips to Cuba in the interest of various projects; secretary Santiago de Cuba Plantation Co., Cuban Development Co., Cuban-American Co., Cuban Colonization Co. Enlisted in C. A, Fourth Infantry, Michigan National Guard, and advanced to captain; served in Spanish-American War as major Second Battalion, Thirty-first Michigan Volunteers, for thirteen months, three months in Cuba; elected colonel First Regiment, M.N.G., 1900; has occupied office of brigadier general, commanding M.N.G. since Feb. 23, 1905. Began active career at saw mill and continued, 1873-82; was in retail meat business three years and in U.S. mail service five years; entered life insurance, beginning as solicitor for the National Life Insurance Co. of Vermont, and became manager at Milwaukee, Wis., in 1901, for the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Co. of California; has been manager of the Pacific Life Insurance Co. at Detroit since Jan., 1907.
