(Carpenter) Heames; has lived in Detroit all his life except for six months, and was educated in public schools of Detroit up to 12 1/2 years of age, when he went to work; married, Detroit, April 26, 1876, Lucy M. Clapp, of Mentor, O. Founded W.E. Heame's Co., 1876, of which is president, wholesale jobbers and manufacturers, flour merchants, manufacturers of baker's supplies, jellies, extract, etc., also dealers in fire bricks, cements. etc. President Flour Men's association of Detroit, and the Brush Heap Silver Mines of Kingston, New Mexico. HECKER, Frank, J., manufacturer: born Washtenaw Co., Mich., July 9, 1846; son of Frank and Cynthia (Shield) Hecker; educated in public schools; married at Omaha, Neb. Dec. 8, 1868, Anna M. Williamson. Acting division superintendent Union Pacific Ry., 1869; general superintendent Roundout & Oswego R. R., 1870-76, and Eel River R.R., 1876-79; organized the Peninsular Car Co., Dec. 1879 and was connected with it and its successor, the Michigan Peninsular Car Co., as president until 1900. Has been resident of Detroit since 1868; has been connected with building and paving business ever since the beginning of his active career, 1871, formerly member of firm of Gutow & Heiden, which consolidated in 1898 with the C. H. Little Co., of which he is vice president, Member Detroit Builder's and Traders' Exchange, Detroit Board of Commerce. Republican and to politics; Lutheran in church affiliation. HEIGHO, George William, born, Essex, Eng., May 8, 1862; son of George and Amelia (Stevens) Heigho; educated in Palmer's Collegiate Preparatory School, Essex, came to America, Apr., 1874; married at Detroit, Mar. 1, 1904, Edna Filmore Webster. Resident of Detroit since 1875; began active career as clerk in Detroit office of R. G. Dun & Co., continuing, 1876-81; became connected with office of Calvert Lithographing Co., Feb. 1881; has been secretary and treasurer of the company since 1900. Republican. Episcopalian. Lawyer, publicist; born, Detroit, Oct. 17, 1865; son of Emil S. and Fanny (Butzel) Heineman; educated in Patterson's School; Detroit Public and high schools (president of class of 1883); University of Michigan, degree of Ph.B., 18887, Law Department, same university, 1890; unmarried. Practiced in Detroit since May 4, 1889; specialties; financial and commercial negotiations and as counsel. Director Detroit Fire and Marine Insurance Co., secretary Merz Capsule Co. and other companies. Chief assistant city attorney, 1893-96; member state legislature, 1899-1900; projected the Belle Isle aquarium, and introduced the present state tax bill; member Detroit City Council since 1903 (now president common council); appointed by governor member State Board of Library Commissioners, 1903, and reappointed for four years, 1907 (now president); president League of Michigan Municipalities, the largest civic organization of the state, comprising the cities of the state, their mayors and officials (now serving second term); Trusties League of American Municipalities, the chief national organization of pamphlets and prepared many contributions and reports along lines suggested. HELMS, Richard E.; born near Hamburg, Germany, Nov. 6, 1864; son of Julius and Hohanna (Cary) Helms; came to America, 1868; educated in Detroit public schools, married at Detroit, Apr., 1882, Miss Cora Worth. Learned cigar makers' trade in Detroit; became superintendent Brown Bros., continuing for eighteen years; has been director, vice president and superintendent of the San Telmo Cigar Manufacturing Co. since 1902. Republican. Lutheran. Mason (32*) Shriner; member I.O.F., K.O.T.M. Recreation: Fishing. Office: 540-550 Forest As., Residence: 215 Theodore St. HEMMERTER, John P.; born Saginaw, Mich., Aug. 13, 1862; son of John M. and Mary (Leidlein) Hammeter; educated in German parochial schools of Saginaw; married at Syracuse, N. Y., June 11, 1889, Caroline H. Latterner. Lived on farm near Saginaw until 1883; followed different line of business until Jan., 15, 1893, when he established himself in manufacture of cigars at Saginaw, removing the business to Detroit 1897, where he has since continued. Page 221 HENDERSON, Alexander, general superintendent Detroit Copper and Brass Rolling Mills, born Aberdeen, Scotland, June 15, 1865; son of John and Elizabeth (Watt) Henderson; came with parents to Canada in infancy; educated in public and high schools, Lindsay, Ont.; married at Campbellford, Ont. 1891, Alta B. McCormack. Began active career as apprentice in machine shop, serving five years; worked at machinist's trade until 1897, at the same time studying engineering; was appointed assistant superintendent, 1905, and has been general superintendent since 1906. HENDRIE, George, real estate, banking, etc.; born Glasgow, Scotland, Feb. 9, 1834, son of John and Elizabeth (Strathern) Hendrie; educated in Glasgow High School; came to America, 1858, married, Detroit, Oct. 31, 1865, Sarah Sibley. Began career in cartage business, at Hamilton, Ont., 1858; came to Detroit and established himself in same line of business, April, 1859; secured seven years' lease on lines of the old Detroit Street Ry. Co., he and his associates becoming owners of the lines by purchase, 1876; added Grand River Street Ry. lines to the system, 1890; and sold out to Citizens' Ry. Co., 1891. Was chief organizer and owner of the Hamtrack & Grosse Pointe Ry., 1888, of the Wyandotte & Detroit River Ry. Co., 1892, and of the Detroit River Ry., and of the Detroit & Pontiac Ry. Co., 1895. Organized, with associates, 1878, what is now the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic R.R., and became interested in numerous ventures tending to the development of the Upper Peninsula. Was instrumental in securing appropriation of money for the purchase of Belle Isle as a public park. President Detroit & Buffalo Steamboar Co., Detroit Omnibus Line Co., Michigan Avenue Land Co.,(formerly Eureka Iron and Steel Co.); vice president Commercial National Bank, Wyandotte Savings Bank, Union Trust Co., Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Co.
