HOVEY, Silas P., president Peninsular Salt Co.; born, Oxford, Mich., Apr. 10, 1837; son of Horace and Hannah (Scribner) Hovey, early settlers of Oakland Co., Mich.; educated in public schools of Oakland Co.; married at Oxford, 1864, Sarah E. Glsspie. Was engaged in general merchandise business in Oxford and in dry goods business at Pontiac during the Civil War; was in lumber and pine land business at Ionia, until 1882, when he removed to Detroit and is still operating pine lands. Owned and operated 4,000 acre grain and stock farm in Medicine Co., Minn., for eighteen years; one of original incorporators of the Dime Savins Bank. Detroit, of which he is now director; has been president of the Penisular Salt Co., since Nov. 13, 1900. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Baptist (member board of trustees First Baptist Church). Member Palestine Lodge, F. & A.M., King Cyrus Chapter. Detroit Commandery, Knights Templar No. 1, Moslem Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. Clubs: Bankers', Wayne. HOWARD, Frank M., banker; born, Washtenaw Co., Mich., May 23, 1840; son of Martin and Julia Howard; educated in district school Washtenaw, Co.; widower. Engaged for several years in lumber business in California; returned to Ann Arbor, Mich., and entered manufacture of farm implements; has devoted his attention mainly to banking interest since 1880 and is identified with the First  National Bank and State Savings Bank, Ann Arbor, and the Penisular Savings Bank, Detroit. Member of Knights of Columbus. Office: 210 1st St., W. Residence: 44 Hazelwood Av.

HOWARTH, John Bradshaw, treasurer The Pingree Company, wholesale shoe manufacturers; born, Graniteville, Mass., Mar. 29, 1858; son of George and Margaret (Bradshaw) Howarth; educated in common schools and at Westford (Mass.) Academy; married Detroit, Apr. 8, 1884, Fanny Child Perkins. Upon leaving school December, 1875, entered employ of The Pingree Company (then Pingree& Smith, organized 1866); became member of the firm, 1883, and has been treasurer of the company since time of incorporation 1902. Has confined his business to activities to The Pingree Company and its branches. Episcopalian. President Board of Mission P.E. Diocese of Michigan. President Detroit Y.M.C.A. Club; Detroit. Recreation: Study of sociology and political economy. Office: 104 Jefferson Av. Residence: 785 Cass Avenue.

HOWE, Jeremiah, born, Tipperary Co., Ireland, Aug. 15, 1850; son of Thomas and Bridget (Tuohey) Howe; came to America, 1871; educated iin common and night schools in United States; married at Torrington, Conn., May 1878, Margaret Ganley. Was connected with the Coe Brass Manufacturing  Co., Torringtion, for ten years; came to Detroit, 1881, and entered employ of Detroit Copper and Brass Rolling Mills and was superintendent of the company, 1883-1905; resigned position and has been  general superintendent of the Michigan Copper and Brass Co. since February 1905. Independent in politics. Catholic. Club: Rushmere. Office: 1577-1613 Jefferson Av. W. Residence: 227 W. Grand Boul.

HOYT, Henry Warrington; born on farm, Walworth Co., Wis., July 29, 1852; son of Avery A. and Caroline M. (Hoyt) Hoyt; graduate University of Wisconsin, Ph. B. and M.L. 1872; married at Chicago, December 1875, Miss Florence L. Hastings. Began active career as editor and proprietor Saline County Post, Crete, Neb., 1872, continuing until 1877; postmaster, Crete, 1875-77; chief editor Daily Democrat, Madison, Wis., 1877-83; proprietor Gault House, Chicago, 1883-87; secetary and general manager Gates Iron Works, Chigago, 1887-01; second vice president and sales manager Allis-Chalmers Co., Chicago, 1901-05; retired and devoted attention to private interest, 1905-07; removed to Detroit, May 1907, and became vice president Great Lakes Engineering Works, of which he had been director since 1903. Director Hanna Engineering Works, Chigago. Independent in politics; Christian Scientist. Club: Detroit. Recreation: Fishing. Office: Foot of Rivard St. Residence: 859 Jefferson Av.

HUDSON, Joseph Lowthian, merchant; born, New Castle on Tyne, England, Oct. 17, 1846; son of Richard and Elizabeth (Lowthian) Hudson; came to America, 1860; educated in public schools of England and Hamilton Ont., unmarried. Located at Grand Rapids, Mich., 1860; school six months; farm   six months; began working for C.R. Mabley in clothing business at Potiac, 1861; in business with his father, at Ionia, 1866-77, R. Hudson & Son; came to Detroit, 1877, and associated in clothing business with C.R. Mabley; left Mabley and engaged in clothing business as J.L. Hudson in 1881, which became department store, 1891; whe the present building was completed and occupied (company incorporated as The J.L. Hudson Co., 1897) Vice president Dime Savings Bank; director American National Bank, president Harper Hospital, McGregor Mission, Associated Charities, Florence Crittenton Home, Provident Loan Society; trustee Y.M.C.A. Central M.E. Church and Methodist Deaconess' Home. Formerly Public Lighting Commissioner and Water Commissioner; now member Art Commission  of Detroit, Democrat. Methodist. Club; Detroit, Fellowcraft, Detroit Fishing and Huntion Association.Recreations: Automobiling and traveling. Office: Gratiot and Farmer Sts. Residence: 443 Woodward Av.

HUEBNER, George Charles; born, Detroit, Mar. 6, 1857; son of Edward and Caroline (Hilsebecher) Huebner; educated in German-American Seminary and public schools of Detroit; married at Detroit,  January, 1885, Catherine L. Lotz. Began active career in manufacture of sash and doors with his father, Edward Huebner, the firm later becoming the Huebner Manufacturing Co. (Edward, St. and Jr., and George C.); continued manufacturing sash and doors for sixteen years; then entered political life and served as representative fo First district in Michigan Legislature, 1889-90, and filled office of the county treasurer of Wayne County, 1891-92; returned to business field and engaged for ten years in manufacture of brass goods; has been at the head of the Detroit and Pittsburg Coal Co. since March 1907. Member German Salesmen's Association. Democrat. Prostestant. Member Masonic Order (32*), Knights Templar, Shrine. Recreations: Outdoor diversion. Office: 1010-1012 Majestic Bldg. HUEBNER, George John; born Detroit, Nov. 20, 1885; son of George C. and Catherine L. (Lotz) Huebner; educated in public schools of Detroit and Detroit Central High School, graduating June 1903; attented Detroit College of Law and University of Michigan; unmarried. Became connected with loan department of the National Realty Co.; has been secreatry Detroit and Pittsburg Coal Co. since time of its establishment, March, 1907. Reupblican. Presbyterian. HUETTEMAN, Frank J.; born, Detroit, Feb. 15, 1874; son of Frank and Bernadine (Wessel) Huetteman; educated in parochial schools, Detroit and at Detroit College; married at Detroit, Oct. 10, 1899, Rose M. Shulte. Began active career and apprentice to machinist trade, with the Huetteman & Cramer Co., 1889; became shop forman, assistant treasurer, and since 1904 has been secretary and treasurer of the company. HUMPHRY, Joseph, W., lawyer; born, Stratford, Can., Mar. 11, 1871; son of Joseph W. and Annie (Collins) Humphry; educated in public schools of Stratford, Ont., Strathroy (Ont.) Collegiate Institute and University of Michigan, graduating, degree of LL. B., 1895; married at London, Ont., 1895, Florence Sharp. Taught school 1890, 1891 and 1892; began practice of law in Detroit, 1895, and was member  firm of Walters, Humphry & Walters, 1895-04; has devoted attention mainly to financial work in corporate maters since 1904. President and general manager The Colonial Protland Cement Co., Ltd., of Wiarton, Ont., Can.; secretary The Norris Collar Co. Member Detroit Bar Association. Republican. Methodist.
