JOY, William S., architect; born, Detroit, June 28, 1964; son of Frederick and Martha J. (Sherman) Joy; educated in public schools of Detroit; married at Detroit, Nov. 15, 1904, Agnes Lennox. Entered office of Mortimer L. Smith, 1880, to study architecture, as was associated with Mr. Smith for fourteen yea4s; has practiced on own account, under firm name of W.S. Joy & Co., since 1894; designer of following structures: Charlevoix Apartments, Wellington Apartments, The Vendome, Marlborough Flats, many municipal buildings and considerable terrace work. KAHL, Frederick, iron foundry; born, Galion, O., July 27, 1856; son of Louis and Margaret (Greisel) Kahl; educated in Detroit; married at Detroit, 1881, Mary A. Foley. Has been a resident of Detroit since 1867; learned trade of foundryman at the old Frontier Iron Works, continuing until 1891, when he entered business in his own name as manufacturer of machinery and architectural castings, grate bars and boiler fronts. KAHN, Albert, architect; born, Rhaunen, Westphalia, Germany, Mar. 21, 1869; son of Joseph and Rosalie (Cohn) Kahn; came to America, 1881; educated in public and high schools in Germany; held American architect scholarship for study abroad, 1890-91; married at Detroit, 1897, Ernestine Krolik. Has been engaged in practice of profession in Detroit since 1904. KAHN, Julius; born, Munstereiffel, German, Mar. 8, 1874; son of Joseph and Rosalie Kahn; came to America with parents, 1880; educated in public schools of Detroit; B.S. Was civil engineer for U.S. Navy, assistant engineer U.S. Engineering Corps and in other engineering enterprises, 1896-1900; acted as manager and chief engineer of sulphur and iron mines for the Fuayama Shokai, Tokyo, Japan, in which continued for about three years; was associate member architectural firm of Albert Kahn, Detroit, and has been president of the Trussed Concrete Steel Co. since 1903; manager Concrete Steel and Tile Construction Co,; director people’s Ice Co. KAISER, Henry; born, Detroit, Nov. 24, 1856; son of John and Anna (Theisen) Kaiser; educated in Detroit parochial and public schools; married at Detroit, 1st, 1885, Katherine Schulte (died 1802); 2d, 1898, Miss Catherine Stommel. Began active career by learning shoemaking trade under Nick Sauer, Detroit; followed trade for seven years until 1885, since which time has been engaged as shoe dealer on own account. KAISER, John, clothing merchant; born, Detroit, Feb. 12, 1861; son of John and Anna (Theisen)Kaiser; educated in public schools and business college; married, Detroit, Nov. 4, 1886, Rose Trombley. Traveling salesman for wholesale clothing for twenty-three years; one of the organizers of the Kaiser, Blair CO., retail clothing, 1900, of which is president. Catholic. KALES, William Robert; born, Chicago, Aug. 8, 1870; son of Francis Henry (attorney) and Ellen (Davis) Kale’s; educated in public and private schools, Chicago; Phillips Exeter Acad., Exeter, N.H.; Mass. Institute of Technology, Boston, 1888-92, graduating as mechanical engineer, degree of B.S., 1892; married, Detroit, Oct. 1, 1895, Alice, daughter of John S. Gray. Engaged in steam engine construction at Worcester, Mass., Chicago and Milwaukee, 1892-95; engineer with Brown Hoisting Machinery Co., Cleveland, 1895-99; assisted in organizing firm of Whitehead & Kales, Detroit, Oct. 1, 1899, manufacturers of structural steel for bridges, buildings, etc., incorporated, Nov. 1, 1905, as the Whitehead & Kales Iron Works. KAMPER, Louis, architect; born, Bliesdalheim, Bavaria, Germany, Mar. 11, 1861; son of Peter and Maria (Esch) Kamper; educated in public schools and technical school, Germany; came to America, 1880; married at Detroit, July 20,190, Emily Kling. Began with firm of McKim, Mead & White, architects, New York City; came to Detroit as member of the firm of Scott, Kamper & Scott, 1888, and since dissolution of the firm two years later has operated in his own name. KANE, Edward Elmore, lawyer; born, Plattsburg, N.Y., Sept. 18, 1848; son of Edward and Euretta (Elmore) Kane; educated in public schools and University of Michigan, graduating, B.A., 1867; married, Mackinac Island, Mich., 1875, Grace Franks. Came to Detroit, 1857; studied law and was admitted to the bar, 1873; associated in practice with Judge A.G. Boynton and later with Daniel B. KANTER, Charles E., banker; born, Island of Mackinac, Mich., Feb. 12, 1851; son of Edward and Fannie R. (Granger) Kanter; educated in public schools of Detroit, in college at Racine, Wis., and South Bend, Ind., and at Kreuschin Institute, Dresden, Germany; married at Detroit, June 21, 1876, Fannie E. Mckay. Began business career as messenger German-American Bank, 1867, and advanced through various offices until 1906, when he was elected president (bank organized by his father, Edward Kanter, 1853). Began active career with Edward Kanter, in shipping business, 1865, continuing until 1869; member firm of E. Kanter & Co., 1869-71; cashier German-American Bank Detroit, 1871-94, and now vice president; director Detroit Trust CO. since 1901. KAY, David C.; born, Galt, Ont., Aug. 31, 1858; son of John and Margaret (Cavan) Kay; educated in public schools and collegiate institute, Galt; married at Detroit, 1896, Belle Delamater. Has been connected with Freeman, Delamater & Co., wholesale hardware, cutlery, iron and steel since 1898, and has been secretary and treasurer of the company since February, 1904. Protestant. KAY, John, jeweler; born, Stranraer, Scotland, Feb. 17, 1850; son of John and Margaret (Cavan) Kay; came to Canada, 1851; educated in public schools of Galt, Ont., Can.; married at Jackson, Mich., 1879, Miss Carrie Garlick. Lived in New York City, 1870-74; was connected with jewelry business in Indianapolis, 1874-81, and was manager of one of the large jewelry stores; came to Detroit, 1881, and became manager jewelry firm of Roehm & Wright; one of the organizers and vice president Wright, Kay & Co., 1886-1907; withdrew from the firm, in spring of 1907, and organized firm of John Kay & Co., jewelers, of which he is president and his son is secretary and treasurer.
