LOCKE, Charles E., president Michigan Shoe Co.; born, Detroit, Mar. 9, 1858; son of Charles H. and Avis C. (Fiske) Locke; educated in Prof. Patterson’s Private School, Detroit; married, Detroit, 1888, Sarah W. Hinchman. Began active career as clerk with DuCharme, Fletcher & Co., wholesale hardware, 1876; entered employ of A.C. McGraw & Co., wholesale shoes, 1879, as clerk, and later became assistant manager; resigned, 1895, and organized the Michigan Shoe Co., wholesale shoes and rubbers, of which he has been president from time of organization. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Episcopalian. Member Michigan National Guard for twenty-one years; was lieutenant colonel and assistant adjutant general First Brigade at time of resignation, in 1892. Recreatons: Golf, fishing. LOCKE, William M., manufacturer; born, Brantford, Ont., Oct. 17, 1846; son of William and Elizabeth (Liens) Locke; educated in public schools of Tonawanda, N.Y.; married at Memphis, Mich., Sept. 22, 1868, Lucina Clough. Began active career at East Tawas, Mich., lumber business for self, 1869, and continued for twenty-six years; removed to Detroit, 1895, associated with others and organized The Anderson Carriage Co., of which was secretary, 1895-01; has been treasurer of the company since 1901. LODGE, Albert, physician; born, Brookly, July 26, 1852; son of Edwin Albert and Emma (Kissane) Lodge; educated in public schools and at University of Michigan, graduating, M.D., 1879; married at Detroit, Oct. 20, 1875, Louisa Freeman. LONDY, Samuel M., ladies’ cloaks; born, Germany, Dec. 20, 1878; son of Jacob and Miriam Londy; came to America with parents early in life and was educated in public schools of New York State; unmarried. Lived for many years in New York State, and in New York City for three years; then removed to Chicago, where he remained six years; came to Detroit, Oct., 1906; has been connected with same line of business ever since the beginning of his active career; resident partner of L. Londy & Co., Chicago and Detroit, exclusive dealers in ladies’ cloaks, suits, etc., established in Detroit, Oct., 1906. Recreations: Hunting and fishing. Office: 217 Woodward Av. LONGYEAR, Howard Williams, surgeon; born, Lansing, Mich., July 24, 1852; son of John Wesley and Harriet (Monroe) Longyear; educated in Lansing public schools; commercial college; University of Michigan; Columbia University, New York City, Medical Department (College of Physicians and Surgeons), degree of M.D., 1875; post-graduate studies in hospitals of Berlin and Vienna; married at Lansing, Mich., Sept. 7, 1880, Abbie Scott. In practice in Detroit since 1875; visiting physician to Woman’s Hospital, Gynecologist to Harper Hospital, professor clinical gynecology Detroit College of medicine; vice president and treasurer Universal Button Fastening and Button Co. LOOKER, Oscar R.; born, Columbus, Oh., June 19, 1846; son of Robert S. and Sarah (Hooper) Looker; educated in schools of Ohio; married at Detroit, Oct., 1895, Libbie C. Sullivan. Began in life insurance business, 1867; came to Detroit from Cleveland, O., 1871,and has been identified with the Michigan mutual life Insurance Co. since June of that years, first as bookkeeper, next as secretary, and since 1895 has president. LOTZ, John A., real estate; born, Detroit, Aug. 10, 1858; son of Charles and Catherine Lotz; educated in public schools and commercial college, Detroit; married at Detroit, Nov. 29, 1888, Mary Baisch. Began active career as clerk in dry goods business for self and continued until 1889; went into real estate business, which he conducted alone until 1906, when he organized the National Realty Co., of which he is vice president and manager of building and loan interests. member Detroit real Estate Board, Mercantile Association, German Salesman. LOVELEY, Edward Arthur, real estate; born, Springfield, Mass., June 11, 1879; son of Napoleon P. and Mary (Eno) Loveley; educated in public schools of West Springfield and one year in high school, when at age of 13 he left school on account of death of his father to assist in own support; married at Detroit, Sept. 8, 1904, Lina Florence McLeod. Began active career in employ of Davis Electrical Works (now the Munder Electrical Works), Springfield, continuing until July, 1900; was with Western Envelope Co., Centralia, Ill., until Feb., 1901, after which the company went into the hands of receivers; then located in Cleveland, O., and began to learn real estate business with The Frisbie Co., making a success of the business there; came to Detroit with Mr. Stormfeltz and became connected with W.W. Hannan, of Hannan Real Estate Exchange, continuing one and a half years, when the Gerard, Stormfeltz, Loveley Co. was incorporated, Feb. 15, 1904, now having offices in New York, Buffalo and Detroit, and engaged in general real estate, investments, loans, rentals and fire insurance. LUCE, Theodore, banker; born, Crystal City, Mo., Dec. 31, 1873; son of Theodore and Mary (La Montague) Luce; educated in public schools of Detroit; married at Detroit, 1898, Miss Della Thompson. Came to Detroit with parents, 1876; began active career as messenger Merchants’ and Manufacturers’ national Bank, 1890, continuing for four years; was next identified with the Union Trust Co., and was in charge of the bond department of the company when he left, after twelve years’ service, in 1905, to become manager of the Detroit office of N.W.
