Began active career as dealer in hides, furs and pelts, continuing for five years; associated with his father, 1882, and established present business under title of B. Marx & Son. MARX, Moses; born, Germany, Nov. 12, 1829;son of David and Caroline (Heiman) Marx; came to America, 1854; widower. Was engaged for a number of years in the grocery business, but since 1882 has been senior member firm of B. Marx & Son, wholesale leather, etc. Office: 92-94 Jefferson Av. Residence: 157 Palmer Av.

MARXHAUSEN, August, editor and proprietor Abend-Post; born, Kassel, Germany, Apr. 2, 1833; son of August and Christine Marxhausen; educated in schools of Germany and in school of life; came to America, 1852; married at Detroit, Oct. 10, 1857, Marie Ewers. Began career in newspaper work in Germany in 1845; publisher of Abend-Post since 1853; delegate to Republican National Convention, 1900; member Board of Park commissioners, City of Detroit, 1881-93. Lutheran. President Harmonie Society and member of nearly every German society in Detroit. Office: 60 Broadway St. Residence: 201 E. Adams Av.

MASON, Robert Edmund, banking; born, Detroit, Sept. 30, 1868; son of Robert S. and Phoebe (Reilly) Mason; educated in public schools of Detroit; married at Detroit, Sept. 4, 1893, Nina A. Gould. Began active career as correspondent clerk First National Bank, 1886, continuing until 1890; was receiving teller People’s State Bank, 1890-92, paying teller, 1892-1906, and has been assistant cashier of the bank since Apr., 1906. Member Detroit light Guard, 1889-99 (secretary, 1898). Republican (vice president Alger Republican Club, 1892). Episcopalian. Member Masonic order. MASON, Robert Shaw, vice president People’s State Bank; born, Ireland, July 27, 1839; son of Edward and Fanny W. (Shaw) Mason; educated in public schools; came to America, July, 1852; married at Brooklyn, N.Y., Jan. 17, 1865, Phoebe Reilly, who died, 1898; married again, Dec. 12, 1901, Mrs. Anna B. Wasey. Began in crockery business in employ of F. Wetmore & Co., 1855, continuing one year, when he resigned his position to enter the Michigan Insurance Bank; became connected with the First National Bank, Detroit, 1869, remaining until organization of the State Savings Bank, under the name of the People’s State Bank, was elected a vice president, Jan., 1907, which position he still holds. MAU, Theodore C., manufacturer and dealer in furs; born, Berlin, German, Mar. 5, 1847; son of John L. and Frieda (Helberg) Mau; educated in Realshule, Berlin; married at London, Eng., Feb. 18, 1880, Miss Agnes Sieber. Came to America, 1883, and spent four years in New York; located in Detroit, 1887, and was connected with Henry A. Newland & Co., furriers, for twelve years; has been in business in his own name since 1899. Republican. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Member Harmonie Society, Loyal Guard. MAXON, William Densmore, clergyman; born, Schenectady, N.Y., Oct. 23, 1857; son of George G. and Ann Maria (Wood) Maxon; attended public schools and Union Classical Institute, Schenectady; B.A., Union College, Schenectady, 1878, A.M., 1886 (D.D., 1894); student at General Theological Seminary, New York City, and Berkely Divinity School, Middletown, Conn.; married at Schenectady, Oct. 26, 1881, Annie Cuyler Lush. MAY, James D., lawyer; born, Detroit, Oct. 23, 1863; son of Thomas and Eliza Margaret (Shannon) May; educated in public schools of Detroit, Detroit College and Law Department, University of Michigan, degree of LL.B., 1887; married, Detroit, Apr. 30, 1895, Angie Monnier. Began practice in Detroit, Aug. 15, 1887, and practiced for nine years alone; was member firm of Hourns, May & Maloney for five years, and since 1901 has been senior member of firm of May & Dingeman. MAY, Max; born, Darmstadt, Germany, Mar. 10, 1860; son of Gerson and Caroline (Joseph) May; came to America, 1872; was educated in Germany and in public schools of Iowa; married at Trinidad, Colo., 1890, Hattie Jaffa. Began active career at Des Moines, Ia., and was traveling salesman for M. Riegelman, becoming partner in the firm; came to Detroit, 1896, and founded millinery and fancy goods business in his own name, of which he has since been the head. Member of Temple Bethel. Mason. MAY, Samuel L., lawyer; born, Canada, Mar. 27, 1870; son of John W. and Isabella May; came to Detroit, 1889; educated in public schools and at Detroit College of Law; unmarried. Began practice at Detroit, May, 1891; member of firm of May & O’Brien, 1901; by addition of Hon. Edwin Denby the firm became May, Denby & O’Brien, 1903; Mr. O’Brien appointed marshal of U.S. court in China, Feb., 1907, and firm changed to May, Denby & Webster by admission of Arthur Webster, which still continues. Circuit court commissioner since Jan. 1, 1901. Second vice president City and Suburban Homes Co.; chairman board of directors Guarantee Trust and Loan Co., Ltd. MAY, Thomas, cartoonist; born, Detroit, June 30, 1860; son of Thomas and Margaret E. (Shannon) May; educated in public schools of Detroit; married at Detroit, May 17, 1887, Maria L. Hollings. Began active career as cartoonist on Detroit Evening News, 1886, continuing until 1892; on staff of Detroit Journal since 1892. Member Knights of Columbus. Club: Robert Hopkin. MAY, William; born, New York City, Aug. 22, 1853; son of Thomas and Margaret (Shannon) May; came to Detroit with parents in infancy, 1854; educated in public schools and Mayhew’s Business College, Detroit; married, Detroit, 1878, Miss Helen Oakes (now deceased); 2d, Detroit, 1887, Miss Kate Quinlivan. Learned printer’s trade on old Detroit Tribune and followed same in newspaper offices until 1883; became identified with politics and continued in political life for eight years as deputy county clerk, Wayne Co., Mich., four years as county clerk, 1891-94; then entered the life insurance business and since 1895 has been connected with the Bankers’ Life Association of Des Moines, Ia., the past five years as district manager, with headquarters in Detroit. MAYBURY, William Cotter, lawyer; born, Detroit, Nov. 21, 1848; son of Thomas and Margaret (Cotter) Maybury; educated in public schools of Detroit and at University of Michigan, graduating, degree of M.A., 1870; unmarried. Began practice in Detroit, 1871; member law firm of Maybury, Lucking, Emmons & Helfman, established, 1897. City attorney, 1876-80; professor jurisprudence Michigan College of Medicine, 1881-82; member of Congress, First district, Michigan, 1883-87; mayor of Detroit four and one-half terms (nine years), 1897-05; managing director Standard Life and Accident Insurance Co. Democrat. Mason (33o), active member Supreme Council; Eminent Commander three years of Detroit Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar; six years Commander-in-Chief of Michigan Sovereign Consistory; made Chevalier Legion of Honor, France, July 25, 1901. MAYWORM, Joseph, assistant postmaster, Detroit; born, Detroit, Oct. 11, 1852; son of Joseph Mayworm; educated in public schools of Houghton, Mich., German-American Seminary, Detroit, and Bryant & Stratton Business College, Detroit; married at Houghton, Oct. 1, 1874, Sophia J. Wieber. Began active career as secretary of Lake Superior Iron Works, Houghton, continuing, Sept. 1, 1873-May 1, 1883; secretary Riverside Iron Works, Detroit, May 1, 1883-June 1, 1896, making twenty-three years’ service for same firm; has been assistant postmaster of Detroit since Oct. 1, 1897. MEAD, James Edwin, physician; born, Boston, May 15, 1873; son of John and Maggie (Doyle) Mead; educated in Detroit public schools (Pitcher); Detroit High School; Detroit College of Medicine, degree of M.D., 1899; house surgeon for one year at Harper Hospital, Detroit; married at Detroit, Apr. 30, 1902, Nana R. Oliver. While practicing in Detroit, appointed acting assistant surgeon, U.S. Army, 1901, and assigned to service in the Phillipine Islands; after ten months in the Phillipines was appointed captain and assistant surgeon, U.S.V., on account of services performed in the field in rescuing a fellow officer by holding insurgents at bay. Returned to Detroit, 1903; first lieutenant and assistant surgeon Michigan National Guard. Member Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. Republican. Presbyterian. MEARS, Thomas, roofing and sheet metal works; born, Amherstburg, Ont., Can., Sept. 20, 1854; son of William and Eleanor (Mason) Mears; educated in public schools of Sandwich, Ont., 1862-69; married at Sandwich, Apr. 9, 1877, Eliza Lassaline. Began active career by learning tinsmith trade, at Windsor, Ont., continuing, 1870-73; came to Detroit and was employed by John Leadley & Sons, galvanized iron cornice works, 1873-75; then entered employment of John B. Dyer, car refrigerator and steamboat works, continuing, 1875-78; became connected with Leadley & Hutton, 1878, and has been a member of the firm since 1889, now known as Robert Hutton & Co., manufacturers of roofing and sheet metal. MEDBURY, Charles Franklin; born, Foxboro, Mass., Aug. 6, 1866; son of Charles E. and Elizabeth (Butters) Medbury; educated in Foxboro public schools and at Brown University, graduating, degree of A.B., 1888; married at Lynn, Mass., Oct. 17, 1889, Mary Durfee.
