McNIEL, Daniel T.; born, Logansport, Ind., Dec. 7, 1847; son of Daniel and Penina (Stumbaugh) McNiel; educated in public schools of Indiana; married at Kokomo, Ind., 1880, Miss Sarah Pickett. Began active career as clerk in general freight office of the Indianapolis, Peru & Chicago R.R., Indianapolis; next engaged in hardware business in Kokomo, Ind., continuing for ten years; was traveling salesman for the Reeves Pulley Co., becoming vice president of the company, 1897; removed to Detroit, 1904, and in November, 1905, completed organization of the Detroit Steel Pulley Co., manufacturers of steel belt pulleys, of which has been president and manager since time of organization. MCPHERSON, Alexander, banker; born, Daviat, Scotland, June 7, 1836; son of William and Elizabeth (Riddle) McPherson; came to America 1836; educated in village schools of Howell, Mich., and at Cochran Business College, Detroit, graduating, 1857; married, Greenville, Mich., Sept. 4, 1860, Julia C. Ellsworth. Was engaged in mercantile business with Geo. W. Lee, L.F. Crosman and H.H. Mills, Howell, 1859-63; organized firm of Alexander McPherson & Co., bankers, Howell, June, 1865, of which he is still a member; was offered and accepted presidency of the Old Detroit National Bank, 1891, and since that time has made his home in Detroit. Also president Detroit Trust Co.; vice president Buhl Malleable Co.; director National Can Co., The State Bank of Fowlerville. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Presbyterian. MACPHERSON, Frank Herbert, public accountant; born, Sharon, Ont., Can., Sept. 2, 1861; son of Crawford and Elizabeth (Terry) Macpherson; educated in public schools of Ontario. Began active career in general store, 1872, continuing until 1875; in printing office, 1876-78; bookkeeper in general store at Brigden, Ont., 1879-82; publisher Beeton (Ont.) World, Canadian Bee Journal, Canadian Poultry Journal, 1883-92; publisher Windsor (Ont.) Review, 1893-96; in field of accounts since 1897; head of F.H. MacPherson & Co., public accountants and auditors, since 1904. President institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. Represented Institute of Ontario, chartered accountants at St. Louis Exposition; frequent contributor of articles on accounting to technical magazines. Began practice in Cincinnati, Apr. 11, 1896; removed to Detroit, 1898. member American medical Association, American Proctologic Association, Michigan State Medical Society, Wayne County medical Society. McVITTIE, Alexander; born, Duntocher, Scotland, May 16, 1842; son of Walter and Mary (Taylor) McVittie; came with parents to London, Can., 1852; early education in Glasgow; married at Detroit, 1864. Irence C. Collier; again, 1867, Elizabeth McLeod. Began active career as clerk in hardware store; learned carpenter’s trade and located in Detroit, 1867; entered employ of Campbell, Owen & Co., continuing five years; was elected secretary of the Detroit Dry Dock Co., upon its organization, 1872, and has been vice president and manager of the company since 1890; president Toledo Shipping Co. until 1905. MADAY, Albert, real estate and fire insurance; born, Poland, Apr. 7, 1864; son of Frank and Agnes (Siodmak) Maday; educated in public schools of Wapno, Poland; came to America, spring of 1882; married at Detroit, May 21, 1901, Addie Richards. Began at 18 years of age as laborer in coal mines of Pennsylvania; at 20 was dining room waiter in Wyoming Valley Hotel, Wilkenbarre, Pa., and Wyoming House, Scranton; then sewing machine agent for Eldridge Co., Chicago; next traveled and sold pictures and picture frames for self; engaged in picture and frame business in Detroit and entered real estate and fire insurance; began buying real estate, 1890, and in 1907, became owner of three sections of heavily timbered land in British Columbia. Has traveled extensively in United States and Cuba. Member Detroit Board of Commerce, Detroit real Estate GBoard. member Michigan national Guard, 1900-01. Republican. Roman Catholic. MAEDEL, Arthur, commercial freight agent, Chicago & Alton R.R.; born, Benmiller, Ont., Oct. 23, 1873; son of Gottfried and Wilhelmina (Frank) Maedel; educated in public schools of Canada and business university, Detroit; married, Detroit, June 28, 1905, Katherine Gertrude Becker. Entered railway service, 1894, as billing clerk Michigan Central Ry., and was later rate clerk in commercial office and contracting freight agent, 1902; was contracting freight agent of the Chicago & Alton R.R., 1902-05, and has been commercial freight agent of the same road since June 1, 1905. McLEOD, Malcolm J., state labor commissioner; born, Huron Co., Can., Jan. 22, 1868; son of John and Flora (McKinnon) McLeod; came to Michigan with parents in infancy; educated in public schools of Attica, Mich., and Sarnia, Ont.,; married at Sarnia, May 19, 1890, Christina Darvux. Began active career as clerk in grocery store; was employed on construction of the St. Clair tunnel, 1888-1891; came to Detroit, 1891, and was street car conductor until 1895; acted as business agent for street car employees, 1895-1900; was appointed deputy labor commissioner by Gov. Bliss, 1901, and state labor commissioner by Gov. Warner, 1905. Republican. Roman Catholic. Was member state legislature, 1899-1900; candidate for nomination for mayor of Detroit and received 10,000 votes at primary election, but was defeated by Dr. J.H. Carstens.
