Bank, and when the institution was made a state bank, was elected cashier and served in that capacity for two years; organized the Importers and Traders State Bank, Wakefield, and conducted it as cashier for two years; removed to Elk Rapids, Mich., 1891, and organized the Elk Rapids Savings Bank, which he conducted for twelve years, as cashier or president; became secretary-treasurer of Elk rapids Portland Cement CO., upon its organization, 1900, and was manager of the company, 1902-May, 1904, when resigned to take position of secretary, treasurer and general manager of the Humphrey Bookcase Co., Detroit. Removed to Utica with parents at 12; served in U.S. mustering and disbursing office at Utica, time of Civil War, 1861-63; in War Department office at Washington and deserters bureau of provost marshal generals office, 1863-64; chief clerk to assistant provost marshal general, Hartford, Conn., 1864-65; came to Detroit, 1866; went West on account of impaired health, 1868, and returned, 1870; admitted to the bar, 1872, and began practice in partnership with George W.
