PUTNAM, William Pitt, chemist; born, Belpre, O., Nov. 12, 1870; son of Israel W. and Harriet (Ripley) Putnam; educated in public schools Belpre high School, Buchtel College, B.S., 1892, and two years study at Case School of Applied Science, Cleveland, O.; married, Detroit, June 11, 1900, Alice A. Fuller. Began practice in office of W.J. Rattle, Cleveland; engaged as mining engineer, 1894 and 1895, and in 1896 was in Pittsburg with the Pittsburg Steel and Iron Co.; removed to Detroit, 1897, and for two years was identified with the Superior Charcoal and Iron Co. and later with the Michigan Malleable Iron Co.; organized the Detroit Testing Laboratory, 1903, of which is president; director Great Southern Mica Co. RATHBONE, Charles A., treasurer and general manager Buhl Malleable Co.; born, LeRoy, N.Y., Aug. 4, 1854; son of William Palmer (the leading real estate operator in his day, who was instrumental in the laying out of subdivisions and upbuilding of Detroit, and grandson of General I. Rathbone of LeRoy, N.Y.) and H. Maria (Crane) Rathbone; educated at LeRoy Academy; unmarried. Came to Detroit, in 1854. Started career with Buhl, DuCharme & Co. (now Buhl Sons Co.) and represented them on the road for several years; manager Cass Farm Co., 1893-1901, during which time he subdivided the farm and transplanted the first large trees, one thousand in number, and turned that section into a park; has been treasurer and general manager Buhl Malleable Co., manufacturer of malleable castings, since 1901. Also director Waterman Marine Motor Co., C.B. Dickerson. Largely interested in the upbuilding of the western part of the city. Chairman house committee Detroit Board of Commerce; member legal committee Employers’ Association. Served in U.S. Navy during Spanish-American War on board U.S.S. Yosemite, whose crew received the Sampson medal at close of the war. Republican as to politics; Episcopalian in church affiliation. RAYMOND, Alonzo C.; born, Monroe, N.Y., May 16, 1847; son of Alonzo B. and Elizabeth A.
