REID, George F.W., superintendent The Bradstreet Company; born, Avon, Ont., Feb.23, 1873; son of William C. and Sarah E. (Lane) Reid; educated at Union High School, Grand Rapids, Mich.; married at Grand Rapids, June 27, 1895, to Allie M. Lobdell. Began business career in the office of The Bradstreet Company at Grand Rapids, Mich.; as messenger boy, and was advanced to each desk in the office until promoted to superintendent, which position he filled for five years; next spent three years as special representative of the executive offices in New York City; represented the company for a year at Cincinnati, O, and Louisville, Ky.; has been in charge of the Detroit office since May 1, 1905. member for three years of Michigan National Guard (Custer Guard) at Grand rapids. REID, Philip J., managing editor Detroit Free Press; born, Providence, R.I., July 19, 1865; son of Patrick henry and Katherine (Finnegan) Reid; educated in public schools of Providence, R.I.; A.B., Brown University, 1887; was connected with Postal Service, 1888-90; sporting editor Detroit Tribune, 1890-91; police reporter Detroit Free press, 1891, court reporter, 1892-94, night city editor, 1894-96, city editor, 1896-1905, news editor, 1905-06, managing editor, since 1906. republican. member Elks, royal Arcanum. REID, William; born, Mersea, Ont., Can., Aug. 19, 1842; son of John and Margaret (Bennett) Reid; public school education; married at Detroit, Nov. 9,1869, Mary Powell. Began active career as bookkeeper for Laible, Wright & Hopkins, paints, etc., Detroit; on retirement of Mr. Laible and Mr. Hopkins from the firm, was admitted to partnership, in 1867, under firm name of William Wright & Co., which became Reid & Hills, in 1871; firm dissolved, 1879, since which in business in own name. REILLY, Cornelius John, lawyer; born in Walworth Co., Wis., May 26, 1848; son of John and Mary (Short) Reilly; educated in public schools of Racine, Wis.; married, Nov. 18,1879, Ida Buhl (who died, September, 1881); again, Detroit, November, 1886, Miss Nettie Lansing. Studied law and was admitted to the bar before the Supreme Court, in Detroit, 1870, after studying for three years in the office of Moore & Griffin; began practice in Detroit, 1870; elected circuit judge, Third Judicial District, April, 1875, begin the youngest man ever elected in Michigan to this office, and in November following, was appointed by Gov. John J. Bagley to fill the unexpired term of Judge Patchen; resigned from bench, 1881, to resume practice of law, but in meantime the bench had been increased from one to three judges and was nominated and elected to one of the positions, but through a mistake in returns was not seated; contest carried to State Legislature, but hearing denied; at next election was returned to bench by 10,000 majority and continued to serve until Jan. 1, 1903; has devoted his attention since 1903 to law and to building electric railways. President of the Rapid Ry. to Mt. Clemens, from time it was opened to traffic, 1894, until the line was sold to the Detroit United Ry., 1901, the line having previously extended to port Huron, as the Detroit, port Huron & Shore Line Ry. Organized a construction company (of which was president), with E.M. Fowler, Matthew Slush, Charles R Hannan and A.H. Fleming, and completed construction to Detroit of the Monroe & Toledo Ry., which was reorganized as the Detroit, Monroe & Toledo Short Line Ry.; negotiated sale of the property to Jere C. Hutchins and Mar. 1, 1906, the stock was transferred to interests represented by the Detroit United Ry. Now engaged in building the Chicago, Southern Tractions Ry. from Chicago to Kankakee, Ill., about fifty miles, his work in this and other railway enterprises being of a financial and legal character. President and treasurer Detroit and Toledo Construction Co.; director and treasurer Chicago and Southern Traction Co.; director First National Bank, Security Trust Co. Member Detroit and State Bar associations, Detroit Archaeological Society, State and national Forestry associations. Director and vice president, Detroit Board of Commerce. Democrat. Episcopalian (vestryman St. Paul’s Church, twelve years). Past Master Oriental Lodge No. 240, F.&A.M., Detroit, member King Cyrus Chapter and Michigan Sovereign Consistory, A.A.S.R. Valley of Detroit; I.O.O.F. Michigan No. 1. Clubs: Detroit, Yondotega, Grosse Pointed Racquet and Curling, Y.M.C.A. REILLY, William E.; born, Detroit, Oct. 10, 1858; son of Alexander and Jane (Beattie) Reilly; educated in public schools and business college; married at Augusta, Ga., Arp. 21, 1887, Carolyn L. Bigelow. Cashier and bookkeeper for Black & Cowen, 1880-82; became assistant general bookkeeper for Merchants and Manufacturers’ Bank, Detroit, 1882, general bookkeeper for Black & Cowen, 1880-92; became assistant general bookkeeper for Merchants and Manufactures’ Bank, Detroit, 1882, general bookkeeper, 1883, and assistant cashier, 1887; continuing until 1894, when the bank was merged with the Preston National Bank; entered brokerage business as member of firm of Reilly & Noble; appointed cashier Detroit River Savings Bank, July, 1897, and served until Jan. 1, 1904; now head of firm of W.E. REINDEL, George J.; born, Detroit, July 18, 1864; son of Frederick and Margaret (Zopf) Reindel; educated in public schools of Detroit; married at Chicago, 1892, Amelia Zopf. Began active career as clerk in retail store of Aertz, Meyers & Co., later becoming manager of the store and superintendent of the office and factory; began in business for himself under title of George J. REINDEL, Herman C.; born, Roseville, Mich., Apr. 30, 1867; son of Frederick and Margaret (Zopf) Reindel; educated in public schools of Wayne Co., Mich.; married at Detroit, May 12, 1892, Augusta Rosenau. Began active career in grocery business, 1882, later entering furniture business; has been associated with his brother, George J., in sale of office furniture since 1892, as George J. Reindel & Co. REINVALDT, Otto, mechanical engineer; born, Copenhagen, Denmark, Apr. 17, 1873; son of Christian Wilhelm and Eleanora Christine (Albertus) Reinvaldt; graduated from Borgerdydskolen, Copenhagen, and also from the Technical School of the same city; passed examination as marine engineer of the Danish Navy; came to America, Oct., 1896; married at Detroit, June 19, 1901, Anna Elsa Voigt. Served as apprentice in machinist’s trade in Denmark and also in the Danish Navy; after coming to Detroit was employed in the Dry Dock Engine Works and later by the Huetteman & Cramer Co.; associated with others, 1902, in organizing the Detroit Steel Cooperage Co., manufacturers of glass enameled steel tanks, of which has been secretary and assistant manager since time of organization. REMICK, George Bradford; born, Lincoln, Me., Aug. 4, 1845; son of Royal Clark and Lucy (Merrill) Remick; educated in public schools of Detroit, University of Michigan, graduating, degree of A.B., 1866, Law Department, same university, degree of LL.B., 1868; unmarried. Admitted to the bar, 1868, and practiced until 1882 in office with General H.M. Duffield; gave up law practice to devote entire time to lumber interests in Michigan, and since 1890 has engaged in sale of timber lands in the West. Director Union Trust Co., Detroit. President Oak Grove Hospital, Flint, Mich. Member Michigan legislature, 1881-82. Member Sons of American Revolution. RENTE, Henry J., assistant manager American Radiator Co.; born, Detroit, Mar. 17, 1862; son of Frederick w. and Augusta (Hoche) Rente; educated in public schools of Detroit and Detroit Business University; married at Detroit, Feb. 1, 1893, Margretta V. Watson. Began active career as clerk in drug store of B.E. Sickles; then in factory of E.T. Barnum, wire works, and later as apprentice in machine shop of Detroit Safe Co.; machinist Michigan Bolt and Nut Co., and in 1889, with Michigan Radiator and Iron Manufacturing Co., and later in charge of machine shop of the company; was in business for self one years; became identified, 1901, with American Radiator Co. (successor to Michigan Radiator and Manufacturing Co.), and has been assistant manager of the company since 1904. Republican. Episcopalian. Member I.O.O.F., Loyal Guard. Club: Commercial.
