Began active career in Germany as assistant to his father, who was a tanner; served apprenticeship at jewelers trade and Valentine & Crewell, Detroit, 1849-52; went to Providence, R.I. and worked at trade in various shops; returned to Detroit, 1856,and entered employment of George Doty, continuing until 1861; started in business for himself as a manufacturing jeweler, 1861. Learned trade of cabinet making in Germany and followed it after coming to America; started in business for himself, in Detroit, as manufacturer of furniture, 1887; assisted in organizing the Detroit Cabinet Co., 1891, and has since been treasurer of the company. ROGERS, Ford H., president and general manager Detroit White Lead Works; born, Detroit, Oct. 12, 1840; son of George W. and Jane Clark (Emmons) Rogers (who came to Detroit from Vermont, in July ,1840); educated in public schools of Pontiac, Mich.; married at Rochester N.Y., May 8, 1895, Grace J. Haynes. Cashier Pacific Bank of San Francisco, 1868-72; engaged in mining operations on the Pacific slope, 1872-79; banker and broker in New York City, 1879-80; removed to Detroit and bought the Detroit White Lead Works from an assignee in bankruptcy, 1880; incorporated the present company, Dec. 22, 1880, has been its general manager from time of incorporation and president since Jan., 1898. Has been in a large degree instrumental in bringing the company to a position where its name is known in all leading countries of the world. Hart manufacturing Co., and acted as superintendent of foundry of the company for eight years; was in charge of foundry of Detroit Electrical Works sic years, and was superintendent McCrea & Roberts Co., until 1901; one of the organizers of The sterling & Skinner Manufacturing Co., 1901, of which is vice president. Also president Detroit Motor Castings Co.; vice president Detroit Power Building Co., and identified with American Smelting Co. and Clark Wireless Telegraph Co. Catholic. After leaving school studied law in office of Colonel John Atkinson for several months, then began active career as clerk for Standart Bros., wholesale hardware, where he remained for two years; entered real estate business, 1892, and has since continued in the business in his own name. Became connected with Fred Rosenfeld & Co., Detroit, 1893; organized the San Telmo Cigar Manufacturing Co., 1898, and has since been its president and general manager.
