ROSS, William Allan, lithographing; born, Glasgow, Scotland, Apr. 23, 1843; son of William and Ann (Allan) Ross; educated at Balfour school, Glasgow; came to America, 1862; married at Detroit, 1870, Miss Ellen Brennan. Began active career as apprentice in general lithographing house, Glasgow, 1855; lived for four years in the South after coming to America; removed from South Carolina to Detroit, 1866, and entered employ of Calvert & Co.; became identified with the Calvert Lithographing Co., 1867, and has been vice president and director since 1905. Office; Calvert Lithographing Co. Residence: 82 Garfield Av.

ROTHSCHILD, Louis, tobacco merchant; born, Detroit, June 18, 1863; son of Sigmund and Bertha (Leser) Rothschild; educated in public schools of Detroit; unmarried. Has been identified with leaf tobacco business since the beginning of his active career; began as assistant to his father, who established the business in 1854; member Rothschild & Bro., packers and importers of leaf tobacco; director People’s State Bank. Jewish religion. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Club: Phoenix. Office: 77-79 Jefferson Av. Residence: 37 E. Montcalm St.

ROTHWELL, Arthur V., real estate, loans and insurance; born, Strathroy, Can., Aug. 26, 1873; son of Burrow H. and Mary A. (Merryweather) Rothwell; educated in public schools of Canada and at collegiate institute, up to 1890; married at Detroit, July 1, 1896, Elizabeth W. Reves. Began active career as clerk in general office of Grand Trunk Ry., Detroit, continuing there until September, 1899; was with Grand Trunk, Wabash and Michigan Central lines and contracting freight agent Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Ry., covering Michigan territory, to 1903. Entered real estate business with his father, who established the Rothwell Realty Co., 1889, and retired, 1906, since which time in sole charge and now proprietor of same. Member Detroit Real Estate Board. Republican. Episcopalian. Club: Fellowcraft. Recreations: Hunting and fishing. Office: 71 Home Bank Bldg. Residence: 247 Horton Av.

ROTHWELL, Burrows H., real estate and stocks; born, Warwick, Ont., Mar. 9, 1846; son of Thomas Wade and Fanny M. (Alison) Rothwell; came to Michigan at age of 14; educated in common schools of Canada and at Holly, Oakland Co., Mich.; married at Davisburg, Mich., Mar. 5, 1867, Mary A. Merryweather. Spent the first fifteen years of his active career in railroad service in employ of Detroit, Grand Haven & Milwaukee R.R., as telegraph operator, station agent, etc., at Holly, Davisburg, Corunna and Fenton; has been engaged in general real estate business, insurance and loans at Detroit as Rothwell & Co., since 1890, and has handled some of the largest deals in the city; "got swamped" in financial panic of 1902-03, but recovered; negotiated sale of Scotten Tobacco Co’s plant to Oren Scotten; has dealt largely in Woodward Av. vacant property, and sold for John Curry, $165,000 Woodward Av. property, in 1905. Officer and director in many companies, among which are American Land Co., Mt. Clemens Sugar Co., United States Oil and Gas Co., Maple Valley Stock Ranch Co., etc., Senior major Dufferin Rifles, Brantford, Can., during return to Canada; alderman City of Brantford five years. ROWLEY, William C., railway official; born, Rochester, N.Y., Feb. 24, 1863; son of M. D. and Emaline (Mitchell) Rowley; educated in public schools; married at Quincy, Ill., 1886, Carrie Boswell. Began active career as messenger in office of Blue Line, 1877; agent same line, at Quincy, Ill., 1882, continuing until 1885; was state agent Blue Line and Canada Southern Line, at Detroit, 1885-95; commercial agent Michigan Central R.R., at Detroit, 1895-97; assistant general freight agent, Bay City, 1899-1902, and general freight agent same road, since Jan. 1, 1903. RUDD, Charles W.; born, Orion, Mich., Dec. 7, 1845; son of Robert G. and Sarah A. (Carpenter) Rudd; educated in district schools of Oakland Co., Mich.; married, July 24, 1887, Miss Emma T. Gilman. Began active career, 1865, in milling business, with R.G. Rudd & Son, custom and merchant millers, Orion, continuing until 1888; came to Detroit, 1888, and established in produce commission business, now C.W. Rudd & Son. Member Detroit Produce Exchange. Office: 31 Woodbridge St., W. Residence: 68 Haigh Av.

RUMNEY, John G.; born, Detroit, Oct. 13, 1850; son of John and Martha (Palmer) Ramney; educated in Detroit high School; married, Detroit, Jan. 30, 1883, Mary E. Pittman. Filled position of commercial traveler for wholesale hardware firm previous to 1880; was treasurer Henry C. Hart Manufacturing Co. for eight years and engaged in real estate and cattle business in Montana until 1896; returned to Michigan and assumed management of plant of the American Radiator Co. and Kalamazoo Spring and Axle Co., Kalamazoo; assisted in organizing the Detroit Steel Products Co., 1904, and has been its treasurer and manager from time of organization. Also president and treasurer Highland Park Co., Helena, Mont. member Detroit Board of Commerce. Republican. Clubs: Detroit, Detroit Boat, Country. Recreations: Golf and sailing. Office: 91 E. RUSH, Edward F., wholesale fruits, vegetables and produce; born, London, Eng., Sept. 1, 1860; son of Alfred and Mary E. (Fisk) Rush; came to America, 1868; educated in public schools of Port Huron, Mich.; married, 1st Great Barrington, Mass., 1882, Elizabeth G. Baldwin (now deceased); 2d, St. Louis, Mar. 16, 1907, Miss Emma A. Matt. Began active career in produce commission business at Port Huron, where he and his brother, Alfred H., established in business, as Rush Bros., 1878; father admitted to firm later, which has since been Alfred Rush & Sons (Alfred and Alfred H. Rush residents of California since 1905), Edward F. in control of the business, assisted by his son, Cecil F., who is a member of the firm. Also president Port Huron Amusement Co. Member National League of Commission Merchants (president), Detroit Produce Exchange (president). Republican. Christian Scientist. Recreation: Travel. Office: 45-49 Woodward Av. Has been identified with the Russel Wheel and Foundry Co., manufacturers of cars, car wheels and structural steel work, since leaving university, 1897; purchasing agent, 1897-1902; treasurer of the company since 1902. RUSSEL, Clinton W., assistant general manager Russel Wheel & Foundry Co.; born, Springfield, O., Nov. 19, 1864; son of Francis G. and Helen (Edwards) Russel; educated in public schools, married at Richmond, Va., Apr. 19,1892, Anna m. Rose. Began active career in employ of the Richmond Locomotive and Machine Works, continuing until 1895; was connected with C.W. Hunt Co., New York City, manufacturers of coal handling and conveying machinery, 1895-97; came to Detroit, 1897, as superintendent of Russel Wheel & Foundry Co., manufacturers of structural steel cars, and in general foundry and machinery business, and continued in that position until 1903, since which time he has been assistant general manager and director of the company. (Bagg) Russel; educated in Barston school and Detroit School for Boys; University of Michigan, degree of A.B., 1895; Harvard Law School, three months; unmarried. Has been secretary, treasurer and director Seamless Steel Bath Tub Co. since 1905. Independent in politics. Presbyterian. Member Delta kappa Epsilon. Clubs: Detroit, University, Racquet, Country. RUSSEL, George Howard, banker and manufacturer; born, Detroit, Nov. 29, 1847; son of Dr. George B. and Anna E. (Davenport) Russel; educated in public and private schools of Detroit; married at Detroit, June 27, 1892, Frances E. Bagg. Began active career as yard foreman Detroit & Lake Superior Iron Manufacturing Co. and became its bookkeeper; was elected secretary and treasurer of the Hamtrouck Iron Works, 1867, and was also elected secretary and treasurer Detroit Car Works, 1872; began independently in manufacture of car wheels and castings, February, 1876; organized, with Walter S. Russel, the Russel Car Wheel & Foundry Co., of which he is now vice president; was elected president State Savings Bank, December, 1889, and on its consolidation with the People’s Bank, January, 1907, was elected president of People’s State Bank, which position he now holds. Also vice president Great lake Engineering Works; director International Banking Corporation of New York and Canada Life Assurance Co. Former president Detroit Park and Boulevard Commission. Member American Bankers’ Association (ex-president), Michigan State Bankers’ Association, etc. Clubs: Detroit, Country, Yondotega, Harmonie, Fellowcraft, etc. Recreations: Golf, walking, traveling.
