Began active career with the Russel Wheel and Foundry CO., 1882, became secretary and treasurer, 1885, and continues as secretary; since 1903 secretary and treasurer Great lakes Engineering Works, successor to Riverside Iron Works, steel ship and engine builders, hydraulic dredges and air compressors. RUSSEL, Walter S.; born, Detroit, Mar. 12, 1855; son of George B. and Anna E. (Davenport) Russel; educated in Detroit public schools until 12; Peterson’s School for Boys, 12-16; graduate University of Michigan, June, 1875, degree of C.E.; married at Detroit, Apr. 24, 1880, Mary E. Rumney. Was assistant engineer in U.S. Lake Survey during last two years at college and for one year after graduation; built and operated a car wheel and general foundry, with George H. Russel, 1877, incorporating, 1880, under name of Russel Wheel & Foundry Co.; vice president and general manager, 1880-1904; president since 1904. Also president Detroit Steel Products Co.; director American Radiator Co., Chicago. Member Detroit Engineering Society (one of the incorporators and first president), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ex-vice president and ex-manager), American Institute of Mining Engineers, Detroit Board of Commerce. (Silsbee) Russell; graduate Detroit public schools, 1889; studied music under private tutors; married at Detroit, Jan. 1, 1896, Mary G. Passo. Began professional career at 16 as church choir singer; engaged in newspaper work until 1898, then spent two years on the road as basso of the Murray-Lane Opera Co.; returned to Detroit, Jan. 1, 1900 and has since been engaged as teacher of singing; now basso and director St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir, Detroit. Resident of Detroit since 1871; incorporator Detroit, Ypsilanti & Ann Arbor Ry., and treasurer, 1897-98; incorporator and builder, Detroit, Plymouth & Northville Ry., 1898-1902; incorporator, builder and vice president Detroit, Flint & Saginaw Ry., 1903-04; engaged in development of electric power, etc., since 1904. RYAN, Frank G., president, Parke, Davis & co.; born, Marcellus Falls, N.Y., 1861; educated in public schools of Elmira, N.Y.; spent three years in pharmacy of Brown & Dawson, Syracuse, N.Y.; graduate Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, 1884. Began active career in Philadelphia, where he was identified with several stores; was assistant professor of pharmacy and in charge of commercial department, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, also lecturer on pharmacy at Woman’s Medical College, Philadelphia; resigned various positions and came to Detroit as chief pharmacist Parke, Davis & Co., 1900; was elected member of directors, 1903, secretary, 1905, vice president, 1906, and president of the company after decease of Theodore D. Buhl, 1907. Made trip of seven months around the world visiting foreign branches of the company, returning early in 1907. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. RYNO, Earl Roscoe, manufacturer of gas engines; born, Wayland, Mich., Apr. 18, 1881; son of Eber H. and Sarah J. (Beamer) Ryno; educated in public schools of Wayland; special studies, Chicago, two and on-half years, in English, history and economics; married at Detroit, Aug. 9, 1905, Dedie M. Brydle. Began active career by organizing and promoting the Detroit Auto-Marine Co., 1905, later merged with the Huffman Hinge and Foundry Co., of Cleveland, forming the Ferro Machine and Foundry Co., Cleveland; organized and promoted the St. Clair Motor Co. and managed same, 1906; now president Belle Isle Motor Co. (incorporated), manufacturers of high grade marine engines, and the Detroit Gear Co., manufacturers of the Marine Reverse Gear. Republican as to politics; Congregationalist in church affiliation. SAFFORD, Homer E., physician; born, Plymouth, Mich., Sept. 18, 1869; son of Robert C. and Elizabeth A. (Murray) Safford; educated in Plymouth High School, graduating, 1886; Ann Arbor High School (college preparatory); University of Michigan, degree of Ph.B., 1892, Medical Department, same university, degree of M.D., 1896; married at Ann Arbor, June 28, 1898, Gertrude Sunderland. SALES, Murray W., manufacturer; born, Detroit, Mar. 21, 1866; son of William and Agnes (Adams) Sales; educated in public school of Detroit; married at Detroit, 1893, Jessie June Carter. Began business career as a boy with Allan, Sheldon & Co., wholesale dry goods, continuing for nine years until the firm went out of business; then went to Chicago as local manager Detroit Copper & Brass Rolling Mills, remaining for three years; returned to Detroit, 1901, and organized Sales & Broad Co., of which is president and treasurer. SANDERS, Fred, manufacturing confectioner; born, Buhl, Baden, Germany, July 1, 1848; son of Alvin and Caroline (Conrad) Sanders; educated in public schools of Peru, Ill.; married in Carlsruhe, Germany, 1869, Miss Rose Conrad. Came to America with parents, 1850, and lived in Peru, Ill., and later in Chicago; learned candy making trade and traveled in different parts of the country; visited Germany and perfected himself in his trade, 1865; worked in Chicago,1871-75; came to Detroit, 1875, and established himself in confectionery business, in which he still continues; originated and introduced ice cream soda. SANDERS, George White; born, Jefferson Co., Ind., Dec. 7, 1845; son of John T. and Ann E. After leaving college engaged in civil engineering in the South and West; entered employ of Mutual Life Insurance Co., Mar. 1, 1875; has been actuary of the company since Jan. 1, 1891.
