WARREN, Edward J., Cuban lands, development of Cuban fruit lands; born, Burnett Junction, Wis., May 15, 1862; son of Job and Sarah Diantha (Kingsbury) Warren; educated in Bay City (Mich.) Began active career as clerk in grocery, at London, Ont.; came to Detroit and entered photograph business, 1882, being connected at times with Holcombe & Alvord, F. N. Tomlinson and C. H. Smith, all old-time photographers; removed to Poughkeepsie, N. Y., and conducted a photograph gallery for two years; then was superintendent of agents, in the field, for the ordinary branch of the Prudential Life Insurance Co.; returned to Detroit and opened the state for the Provident Life and Trust Co. of Philadelphia, continuing as state agent for three years, during which period was vice president of the National Underwriters' Association one term; then organized the C. M. Hayes Photo Co.; became interested in Tropical lands and began in stock brokerage business, 1899; organized the Cuban Development Co. and the Santiago de Cuba Plantation Co., for growing citrous fruit in Cuba, and is vice president of both companies' Formerly member Detroit Light Guard. Located in Detroit at age of I7 and began business career in employ of J. M. Arnold & Co., books and stationery, where he remained for six years; appointed deputy collector of customs at Detroit and later was made cashier of the customs office; entered real estate business alone, 1886, continuing until 1892, when he organized firm of Homer Warren & Co., which still continues, the members being self, Cullen Brown and Charles R. Walker. Was appointed postmaster of Detroit by President Roosevelt and received his commission Jan. 15, 1906; has been postmaster since Mar. 1, 1906.
