Reared on a farm near Armada; began active career at 14 in general store of Symons, Smart & Co., South Bay City, Mich., and continued as cashier and bookkeeper, moving with the firm to East Saginaw when it acquired the wholesale business of a retiring concern; became general cashier Detroit & Cleveland Steam Navigation Co., Mar., 1886, continuing until 1891, when was made secretary Detroit & Buffalo Steamboat Co. and assistant treasurer Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Co.; has been general auditor both companies, also of the Cleveland & Toledo Line, since Feb., 1906.
