Began active career in 1855, in the silk goods department of the American shipping house of Firth, Slingsby & Co., Manchester, Eng., continuing until 1861; came to America, 1861, and from August to December of the same year, was with James Davis, dry goods, Kingston, Ont.; was connected with J. & R. Blyth, Brockville, Ont., Dec., 1861-Apr., 1862; located in Detroit, 1862, and was in employ of James W. Farrell, dry goods, until 1869, and with Newcomb, Endicott &,Co., purchasers of the business, 1869-77; remove to Saginaw City, Mich., and associated with A. W. Wright in dry good business under title of J. B. Woolfenden & Co., for three and one-half years, 1877-80; returned to Detroit, Sept., 1880, and has since been identified with the Taylor-Woolfenden Co., importers and dealers in dry goods of which is 2nd vice president. Rapids, Mich., 1880; was route agent Michigan division, and later assistant superintendent same division; removed to Detroit, 1900, and since 1902 has been superintendent Michigan division. WRIGHT, Ammi Willard, manufacturer, capitalist; born, Vt., July 5, 1822; son of Nathan and Polly (Lamson) Wright; in public schools of Rockingham, Vt.; married, Harriet Barton (now deceased); again, at Exeter, Can., Dec. 21, 1885, Anna Case. Cam Detroit, 1850, expecting to go into business here, but at the close of about a year went to Saginaw, Mich., and entered lumber business; associated with others as Miller, Paine & Wright, and bought the "Big Mill" at, Saginaw, 1859; bought out partners' interest and organized the A. W. Wright Lumber Co., 1865; organized the Wells-Stone Mercantile Co., Saginaw, 1867, which, in addition to other transactions, bought pine land in the Missabe Range, Minn., which proved to be underlaid with iron; sold (1895) these timber and mineral lands to the James J. Hill interests (Great Northern R. R.); organized the Wright-Blodgett Co., 1899, timber lands; owner of large real estate interests in Kansas City and Minneapolis and Texas, banking interests in Minneapolis, Duluth, New York City, Detroit and Saginaw; owner Of 3,000 acres of improved land in Gratiot County, Mich.; patron and trustee of Alma College, Alma, Mich since its foundation.
