The Fish Family Farm
Later Years

Many thanks to Rich Rich Hitchcock for scanning and sharing his extensive collections with researchers!

This is where my Grandmother, Verna Hazel (Fish) Hitchcock grew up - the Fish Farm.  See below from her 50th Wedding Anniversary notice:

Tuscola County Advertiser ( Caro , MI), Wednesday, May 30, 1979; page A20.

  "Pioneer's daughter to mark anniversary"

"George Lyle and Verna Hazel (Fish) Hitchcock will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Furrel F. (Dorothy) Fountaine, 5663 Hillcrest Avenue, Detroit on Sunday, June 10, from 1 to 4 p.m.  he couple request no gifts.

Hazel and Lyle were married on June 15, 1929 in Royal Oak, and have since resided in Detroit. Their address for the last 40 years has been 5203 Marseilles Ave.

Besides their daughter, the Hitchcocks have a son, Professor James E. of Dayton , Ohio; nine grand children, and one great grandchild.

Hazel is one of four girls born to John W. and Ida (Coleman) Fish.  Her only living sister is Mrs. Florence B. Lamport of Dearborn. The John Fish farm was located north of Caro on the Colwood Road in Columbis Township.  Hazel and her sisters attended Remington, a rural school, and Caro High School then after two years at the State Normal College at Ypsilanti (Eastern Michigan Univ.), Hazel taught 4th grade in Alpena for three years and 3rd grade in Royal Oak for three years.

Lyle was born to George L. and Emma (Bond) Hitchcock in Cass City.  He attended schools there and worked in his father's hardware store. He left Cass City in 1929 to work for T. B. Rayls, a Detroit hardware company, for three years and then for the Continental Can Co.  Lyle retired in 1969 as Detroit Sales Office Manager of Continental Can after 37 years with the company.

Hazel's grandfather, John W., and great-grandfather, John, were the original settlers on the Fish farm. They each purchased 80 acres of land for one dollar per acre from the state of Michigan in 1873. The land remained in the family over 100 years and was recognized as a Centennial Farm.

In 1975, the farm was sold to Clifford Smith and sons, who had worked the land for many years."
