The name "Michigan" is derived from the Indian word Michsawgyegan, meaning " the Lake Country". It is bounded on the north by Lake Superior; on the east by Lakes Huron, St. Clair, and Erie; on the south by Ohio and Indiana; and on the west by Wisconsin and Lake Michigan; and the extent of its dominion is fifty-six thousand two hundred and forty-three square miles. Michigan has 83 counties and is comprised of an Upper and Lower Penisula which are connected by the Mackinac Bridge.

The Mackinac's towers are 552 feet above the water and it has a center span of 3,800 feet. It stretches five miles from shore to shore.
