Alpena is another county named by Henry R. Schoolcraft combining   "al" with "pinai"  meaning "the partridge". The Ottawa and Chippewa Indians lived in this area when the earliest settlers arrived in the early 1830's. Alpena became a lumbering center with vast timber stands and many rivers. Small burial mounds have been found on the banks of the Thunder Bay and Devil Rivers. and the oldest artifacts in the area are copper and stone tools dating to 1500BC.  There are  80 shipwrecks in the Thunder Bay Underwater Preserve and it is a popular scuba diving area.
