| Date: 12 October 2000 Cemetery: South Attica Cemetery Street: Hunters Creek Rd City: Attica Township County: Lapeer State: Michigan Nation: United States Zip: 48412 Nearby: Just East of Hunters Creek and Lake George Rd intersection Land Type: Public Status: Inactive Accessible: Yes Unmarked graves: Yes Graves within: 400 Oldest grave: about 1844 Newest grave: 1991 Records: Yes Inventory: Yes Records location: South Attica Burial Association (dissolved ca 1920's) Attica Township (very little) and Holly Ann Jacot book "South Attica Pioneers" Owner: Attica Township and Bill Winslow, sexton Condition: Cemetery neglected Overgrown-ground cover Overgrown-vines Broken Headstones Buried Headstones Disintegrating Headstones Fallen Headstones Vandalism Other Problems: Up until 1995, there were headstones literally carried over the years and stacked behind the shed, apparently to make mowing around fallen headstones easier. These were replaced or put into the shed by myself and a few concerned friends. This past summer (2000) the shed has been torn down and some overgrown shrubs removed. To my dismay these stones, some intact and some just bits and pieces, were strewn across existing graves and more stones were buried and broken in the process. Stones were moved to remove shrubs and this job was not completed. Another headstone is missing (since last "inventory" in 1999). It looks like the township was (emphasis on was) trying to clean up cemetery but did not finish the job. Headstones were removed off bases so new ones could be made, but the mess just sits there and big holes remain. I have this cemetery well documented, with family histories, maps of the cemetery and photographs. Previous contacts: Attica Township, Lapeer County Press, Lansing, Attica Historical Society, Lapeer County Genealogical Society Work Status: Work underway - Minor improvements made Submitted by / Contact for additional Information: name: Holly Ann Jacot | |
